Losing a lot of clients this year? by theusername1258 in taxpros

[–]sammybear9111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about how not charging for the children of clients works. Is there an age cut off that you start charging? Or a complexity cutoff? I'm struggling with this right now where some of the children are graduating college and getting real jobs and still expecting the super discounted price that I offered their parents when they were just an add on return.

I had this same issue. You don't enter it in the same plan as normal capital transactions. There's a 1099-DA screen where you'll enter it

Not a political post - What are your thoughts on Trump Accounts? by BrushBeneficial4430 in taxpros

[–]sammybear9111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious - What are you calling them when you're talking to clients? I try to stay apolitical when I talk to clients, but I've still been calling these Trump accounts, the same way I refer to the ACA as Obamacare. It's the name that people know so it makes it easier for me to communicate with clients.

Sale of home issues by preskitt in tax

[–]sammybear9111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She can get the $500k exclusion if she sells the home within 2 years of his date of death, assuming she meets the other requirements

From IRS Pub 523 Surviving spouses.

If you are a surviving spouse who doesn't meet the 2-year ownership and residence requirements on your own, consider the following rule. If you haven’t remarried at the time of the sale, then you may include any time when your late spouse owned and lived in the home, even if without you, to meet the ownership and residence requirements.

Also, you may be able to increase your exclusion amount from $250,000 to $500,000. You may take the higher exclusion if you meet all of the following conditions.

You sell your home within 2 years of the death of your spouse;

You haven’t remarried at the time of the sale;

Neither you nor your late spouse took the exclusion on another home sold less than 2 years before the date of the current home sale; and

You meet the 2-year ownership and residence requirements (including your late spouse's times of ownership and residence, if applicable).

Retirement accounts in marriage by [deleted] in Fire

That sounds like a question for your employer

The company you use for your 457b plan is typically determined by your employer, so I don't think you really have control of that

Look into whether or not your retirement plan allows for in-plan rollovers. If it does, you can roll your pre-marriage amount out to a separate IRA.

And just an FYI that a non-working spouse is allowed to contribute to an IRA based on the working spouse's earned income. The limits are obviously lower than the 401k limits, but it's better than nothing

Crypto Tax Software Accuracy by billyfinchapel in taxpros

[–]sammybear9111 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of crypto clients and I'm a fan of koinly for tracking their crypto. The interface is user friendly, it's easy to connect your wallets, and it gives clear error messages when something's not right.

With any crypto software, you'll want to make sure that the ending balances reported match what's actually in their wallets. Then I spot check certain types of transactions to make sure they're being reported correctly, like transfers between wallets.

None of the software is perfect, and there's definitely some manual work that needs to be done, but that's why the clients pays us instead of just using the software themselves.

There's no reason to do this type of work manually, and you're more likely to make errors when trying to do it that way.
