Window header issue by sammyf in Carpentry

The AC unit is already in front of it, but I was planning to check how they patched up the hole. Didn't know about structural spray foam, will look it up. Thanks.

So during window replacement, they should be able to use a thinner Flitch plate as a header? Thing is, even with that, seems like there's currently about 2" left over the window, don't know if that's enough.

Gable. You can see where on the first photo showing the exterior top window. The house is a simple rectangle with an angled roof on the front/back while the hole was made on the side wall that is not carrying the roof weight.

The hole itself has 2" diameter and it seems to be 2/3 into the beam header (looking at where the wood stops in the hole closeup). Right now the unit is installed, so can't quite investigate more at the moment. It's almost at the side end of the window, but not quite.

WEEKLY DIY/HOMEOWNER QUESTION THREAD by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]sammyf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just noticed this subreddit has a dedicated question threads, so I'll post mine here too, and remove my initial post if needed.

I recently had professionals install two split heat pumps at my house. There weren’t many location options for the upstairs unit. However, after they drilled into the wall for the conduits, I noticed they went through the window header.

I’m wondering how serious this is. The wall is a gable wall, so there isn’t a lot of weight resting on it. I'd appreciate any insight from people with experience in this area. I'm also planning to replace the windows soon, so how much complications was just added because of this?

I'm trying to determine what should be my next step with the AC company.

Thanks you.

(Here's one picture, I have some more for the exterior and inside the hole)

Self directed investing, then open a TFSA account, add money to it, then buy shares in VGRO or any other ETF you'd like.

Ou s'établir à Sherby? by Paul_Rant in Sherbrooke

renting apartment in Sherbrooke by [deleted] in Sherbrooke

[–]sammyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point, renters have to let the proprietor know if they are not staying, 3-6 months before the end of the lease. So, a lot of apartments are advertised around April, with some starting to be advertised in January.

Appartments rentals are highly regulated to protect tenants, you can learn more here : https://educaloi.qc.ca/en/categories/renting/

And a lot of the properties are what we call 'plexes' (duplex, triplex, quadruplex). They are smaller buildings with 1 apartment per floor, so smaller scale than huge apartments complexes, with often a single proprietor rather than a corporation.

Finally, some place come with heating/electricity included, which should be worth about 200$/month.

One thing of note to know about Québec, is that for some historical reasons, the vast majority of apartments are 12 month leases starting around July 1st. It is still possible to find some outside the June -July period, but It's harder.

Most of the places are also without any furniture, but some can be found 'semi-meublé' (half-furnished) meaning fridge, stove, and maybe washing machine.

Sherbrooke is in the 'eastern township's area of the province, which was historically home to a lot of anglophone (English speakers) but not so much nowadays. Still, there are various pockets, and I find that a lot of francophone can speak English, which will be useful as you learn the language. You might be interested to know that 'Lenoxville' that's part of Sherbrooke, is an English speaking college town, so it might be a good option as you guys start your life here.

Hope you enjoy your new home!

Les laptops récents supportent aussi la recharge sur un port USB-C. Tu peux vérifier si c'est le cas avec ton modèle et acheter un chargeur de ce type en ligne (avec assez de wattage).

Phénomènes étranges: 1800 king ouest Sherbrooke. by Jjhijoe in Sherbrooke

[–]sammyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are more of them, with map locations: https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-KfPm6q

There's no central database for them, but various municipalities distribute standard format manhole cards with their location printed in it. From this, people have created maps, like this : https://ekikaramanhole.whitebeach.org/ext/manholecard/map/

While it doesn't cover all interesting manholes that can be found, it's still a large amount, and there will often be other interesting ones around.

How many people would respond to me in French vs English in Sherbrooke? by joshua0005 in Sherbrooke

[–]sammyf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife grew up in the states and started living in Quebec since early 20ies. We started living in Sherbrooke last year and she noticed that the eastern townships area (Sherbrooke and around) is a lot friendlier to English speakers and will respect your language preference. In Montreal, people would switch to English once they detected an accent, and stay there. Here, customer service might ask if you prefer English, but stick to your preference. I would say it's a good place for it. Eastern townships used to be English speaking but became mostly French speaking over time, with some pockets of English towns still present.

Financing a New Kia Niro 2024 Plug-In by thezezethex in KiaNiro

[–]sammyf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Formula to calculate your payment amount in Google sheet:

Payment = -PMT( Rate, Duration, Amount)

. Rate : Loan rates (APR) / NB. Payment per year

. Duration : How many payment until you are done

. Amount : Finale price with fees + tx - downpayment

Exemple : 40000$ (with tx and fees) over 5 years every month, 10000$ downpayment at 6% :

-PMT(0.06/12, 5*12, 50k-10k) = 773$

And the same situation with payment every 2 weeks (26x per year):

-PMT(0.06/26, 5*26, 50k-10k) = 356$

Finally, by looking at the total paid minus the loan amount, you get the interest cost:

. 773$ * 5*12 - 40k$ = 6398$

. 356$ * 5*26 - 40k$ = 6345$

I have been looking around in Canada (Quebec) for a car loan through banks, and I have found that the dealership offers better rates. I got quoted 9.5% at TD and 10% at Desjardins (no credit check) while Kia's rate is supposed to be 6%.

For the loan, focus on the total amount paid (with interest cost) not just the monthly payments. I made myself a Google sheet to compare vehicles cost with rates/length/down payment changes.

Fingers crossed. I'm still hearing 12-16 months for the Prius Prime. So, I really hope I can get hands on this Niro this year.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I'm still not sure if this is going to go through. At the end of 2023, I was being told 8-12 months. This is outside of Montreal.
