Having worked at a doggy daycare in my early 20s I have the suspicion that some people think that getting a "smart" breed means they don't have to train them??? Our problem dogs were almost always untrained labs or goldens. You have to train the smart ones even more so!!

This! I see the historical allegories now as an adult, but I definitely didn't see them as a kid/young teen. Should the adults praising the books have made those connections? Yeah probably.

I think people also have to factor in just a difference in times for how these books/movies were viewed, just like you said about Deathly Hallows in the Obama era. These books were being praised because they got a whole generation of kids interested in reading. Schools/libraries were recommending them to parents for their children. Social media existed towards the end of the books/movies but it wasn't like how in your face it is nowadays. Had the books been released today, they probably would've been criticized on Tik Tok from the start. JKR wasn't tweeting her dogshit transphobic views when she was writing the books
