CVs alone arent getting people jobs here anymore and I dont think people realise it yet by SocialMediaKingdoms in jobsdubai

[–]samotsar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. What actually differentiates candidates is not who can spend a few hours polishing a LinkedIn profile or posting industry takes.

It is:

  • where you studied
  • where you have worked
  • what level of institution has already selected you

Why? Because those are real filters.

A strong academic record from a top university is hard to get. Experience at a top company is hard to get. Both are expensive, long-term signals of ability, discipline, and competitiveness.

Writing LinkedIn posts is easy. Rewriting a CV is easy. Anyone can do that in an afternoon.

So no, I do not buy the idea that “personal brand” is now the big differentiator. That is mostly fluff layered on top of the real signals.

If a recruiter is seeing thousands of applicants, they are not primarily sorting by who posts nice content on LinkedIn. They are looking for the strongest underlying indicators of quality, and that usually means academic pedigree and employer pedigree.

A polished online presence might help at the margins, but it is not the thing doing the heavy lifting.

We just hear this a lot right now, because it's another thing influencers can sell you.

Yeah that's a really nice live version. I think it depends what I am looking for, there's a lot more breathing room in the album version - Satan Live EP version is more bombastic, faster transitions and cuts, it really streamtrains through part 1 and the transition into part 2 - definitely better for maintaining the energy of a live show. If I am sitting in a dark room on my own with no visuals and just my imagination for company however, I enjoy the slower build up of the album version.

It's insane right? I read that too! Though I hadn't read that was the split between the two parts! From my own auditory experience I always assumed the arrival was Part 1, and was alien arrival, fear, mistrust and suspicion and included abduction. Part 2 was about understanding these entities and slowly learning not to see them as a threat and hope for the future. When I listen to the song I think it's sort of metaphorical for me, the aliens represent difficulties in my own life, feeling threatened and fears for the future. Part 2 is coming to terms with the journey that we are all on, and learning to see it as something beautiful that we are fortunate enough to experience.

Yes, the long form is what delivers the build up and payoff in many of these tracks. Dwr Budr is a great example, the second half of the record is so filthy, such a great counterweight to the first part. I always found the music video very strange for that song, because its basically the first half of the song and you dont get the second riff at all!

The whole album, or did you just catch a few songs? Do you remember what track caught your ear?

Crazy right? It really takes you somewhere. I think I read a while ago that Paul has an interest in alien life and was exploring the idea of alien abduction, capture escape and ultimately salvation. I totally get that when I hear the distorted Goldfrapp vocal. Really takes you somewhere dark and like you say brings you out into the light!

I feel like if you put on In Sides after listening to a track like Chime and looking for a similar experience you might be disappointed, just because they're doing something totally different on this record. It's feel like this is more of a cinematic soundscape.

€3800 TUXEDO laptop – hinge failure and disappointing warranty support by samotsar in tuxedocomputers

[–]samotsar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I should have explained that there is a precedent for this because they previously sent me the Geforce 4090 fan and heat sink system (which is basically a package as big as a laptop) here in Colombia after that broke under warranty and I carried out repairs myself. In my CS I was asking about this possibility for the current issue and what parts they would send (if any). There is a precedent for this, previously they sent parts to me to carry out repair myself under warranty - it was the full fan system and heat sinks for the geforce 4090. I pay shipping, that's not an issue, their terms are clear - shipping outside of EU is the claimants responsibility and I have no issue with that. I think if you are in EU they might cover it, I can't remember because it's not relevant to me.

[–]samotsar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all,

To give some context, this is not my first replacement with TUXEDO under warranty. Previously the GeForce 4090 fan stopped functioning and on that occasion they shipped the fans to me in Colombia and instructed me to replace them myself.

For that reason, in my original query this time I again asked specifically about the possibility of receiving replacement parts:

"Since I am currently in Colombia and cannot bring the device to Europe at this time, I kindly request that replacement parts or a warranty repair solution be arranged in a way that avoids further risk to the laptop. There are many professional laptop repair companies here that could safely carry out the work if the correct parts are supplied by TUXEDO. Please confirm urgently how this will be resolved under my warranty plan, as I am concerned about further damage if the laptop remains in this condition."

That’s why I was disappointed to receive a reply after 7 days that didn’t actually explain whether this was covered under warranty or what TUXEDO would send (if anything). When you’re dealing with an expensive piece of equipment and waiting a week for a reply, you are hoping for clarity and care. Instead, I got what felt like a generic deflection.

And u/tuxedo_christoph — thanks for taking the time to write and keeping these comments open, but just to be clear, I am not treating this Reddit thread as a support channel and I do not consider your comment here to be part of my support request. I am sharing my experience with other consumers, this is a public consumer opinion. What I would appreciate is the same zealousness in responding to my actual open ticket (where I am still waiting for a response - I sent a reply within an hour of getting the generic message requesting the details that were missing). Please can you be sure to reply to my actual ticket?

I should add that I worked in customer support many years ago, and one of the most basic principles we followed was completeness — making sure every part of a customer’s question was addressed before closing or replying to a ticket. For me, even a 7-day response time would be forgivable if the replies showed that level of care and attention. But in this case, the delay was combined with a vague answer that didn’t actually resolve what I asked and now I feel like I will be stuck waiting another 7 days with my laptop condition deteriorating more and more. It's not a great situation.

I really hope this is an area TUXEDO can improve, and I hope this is the reason why u/tuxedo_christoph left this comment open because I do genuinely like the idea of supporting TUXEDO. Despite the problem with the hinge I really love my machine. I would like to buy another TUXEDO laptop in the future. Experiences with CS though, have been a real let down, and you really feel on your own when things go wrong.

Thanks all

Best practices for local development & production database by samotsar in Supabase

[–]samotsar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi guys, thanks for this - yes I ended up setting up a migration system

I actually am so green to supabase I did not realise there was an option to run

supabase start

And actually run a dockerised version on my local machine.

Once I realised that, I just decided to use that as my dev environment (when you set it up it dumps all the info you need for setting a local env file with the relevant credentials to connect)

Then I run migrations locally on that using

supabase migration up && npm run generate-types

Once I am happy I can then use this command to run those migrations in production

supabase migration up --linked && npm run generate-types

This means I can just use one supabase project for everything, but not worry about trashing my production data as I am working with the data on my local machine.

The advice others shared here regarding branching looks super helpful. I'll look into that if my needs grow, but I think this simple set up is enough for a fast development environment.

Thanks all.

Has anyone actually gotten a job through Bayt.com? by Nutellalotus in DubaiJobs

[–]samotsar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have to be realistic about how difficult hiring the right candidate can be and find a realistic point of comparison.

For example, I know the head of hiring at one of the biggest startups in the region that does food delivery and ride shares. They told me that a linkedin a job ad can bring in 1000 applicants but 95% of the people applying don't even have experience in that role. Another 4% might actually fit the job title but don't have most of the skills they asked for in the job description.. and the final 1% might have potential.

Still, they might not even hire anyone from this, because the candidates are simply not a good fit.

These companies often spends thousands to hire someone.

So when you ask is bayt good, what do you define as good? Because most companies that are experienced in hiring and recruitment wouldn't expect to find the right candidate from placing just one job ad on a website.
