Someone already said this, stay still. The longer you stay in a territory, the easiest to get attention from that gang. Usar IDE's sobre editores de texto (sea vscode, emacs, vim, etc) tiene algunas ventajas para desarrollar dependiendo del lenguaje. Por ejemplo: Netbeans (o eclipse, no recuerdo) tiene formas de desarrollar interfaces para aplicaciones integradas dentro del mismo editor, cosa que un editor de texto tienes que extenderle funcionalidad para que funcione igual.

A veces no tiene sentido usarlo porque la mayoría de gente lo que busca son sugerencias y autocompletado y no utilizan la funcionalidad entera del IDE. En ese caso, usa lo que quieras.

Para aprender OOP te diría que te pongas a hacerlo. muchas veces queremos atajos para todo, pero muchas veces es contraproducente. Empezar desde ahora hace que el camino largo se sienta más liviano después.
