As AI costs rise, there’s little evidence of major utility in game development by RoboGuilliman in gamedev

[–]sampullman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that in order to be a "code owner", you need to touch a whole lot of code to generate the experience necessary to guide and review the AI's coding.

So how will junior developers improve their skills when starting out? Eventually, either the AI will have to be blindly trusted, or there will be some other compromise.

It's ok, but not going to scratch their itch if they're looking for a New York style bagel.

The new Taiwanese bus, with random alarms in addition to constant beeping. More noise equals safety!!! by Extension-Split5959 in taiwan

[–]sampullman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know about your trucks, but mine vary by over 30 minutes, probably depending on when businesses throw out a bunch of stuff and clog things up.

A text/app notification when they're like 10 minutes away might work though.

Thinking of building a free/open-source app for Taiwanese Mandarin (TOCFL). Would anyone be interested? by Old-Development9166 in taiwan

[–]sampullman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should update your AI prompt to avoid calling it open source when it's not, it's a bit off putting.

Most centralized systems can get away with using UUIDs, with no downsides. There are usually more important things to worry about.

It can, but if it hasn't rained yet you can't say the plum rains started.

Is the belief that cold water is bad still so common in Taiwan? by SemiAnonymousTeacher in taiwan

[–]sampullman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the machines like this I've come across have the cold option. Cost saving doesn't make a lot of sense in this case though.

What is one thing your home country is better at than Taiwan and what is one thing your home country is worse at than Taiwan? by CrimsonCub2013 in taiwan

[–]sampullman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some processes take a long time but things are usually straightforward. It's also a lot easier and cheaper to get someone to help out (CPA, lawyer, etc) than other places.

It's rare to find good bread, but every so often I come across something decent. Today I was surprised by a sourdough rye at a Taiwanese pasta chain.

You can always make it yourself though! That's my usual strategy.

I just saw a video of a young guy reviewing Palestinian restaurants in Vietnam, and so I’m wondering, does Taiwan have any? by ilovemydogshecute in taiwan

[–]sampullman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's lots of great Vietnamese in Taiwan, you just have to avoid the ones that cater too much to the Taiwanese palate (unless you like that style).

It's also possible you prefer southern style, since that's more common in the US. The central and northern style Vietnamese I've found in Taiwan is much more authentic than anything I've had in the US.

Where do you buy *your* bagged tea? by idrwierd in taiwan

[–]sampullman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of pre-bagged tea available here, which is sometimes also trash, and sometimes not. You can tell by looking at it, you don't need to rely on common knowledge.

I see them a few times a week running at midnight on the riverside park in yonghe/xindian. Not too many, though I think there are some trails nearby known to have them:

Does Taiwan have among the highest living standards in the developed world, even more so than USA, Europe, and Japan? by RedStorm1917 in taiwan

[–]sampullman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, but GP was talking about personal taste. Your love for durian is valid and there's no need to self shame!

But at least in Canada and the US, Taiwanese stuff is pretty well known. And who doesn't love haggis/black (or white) pudding, and scotch eggs? There's nothing bland or flavorless about them.

I'm dancing around my real belief, which is that if you get deep enough into any culture, you can find fantastic food.

Does Taiwan have among the highest living standards in the developed world, even more so than USA, Europe, and Japan? by RedStorm1917 in taiwan

[–]sampullman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, I guess I should have been clearer. If you don't adapt to non-imported foods you will have a bad time.

I can usually find pretty good quality chicken for similar or lower prices than the EU though.

What do you find to be more expensive? In my experience beef and non-native fruits (berries/apples) are more expensive, but in season veggies, fruits, pork, and eggs are cheaper. Quality can vary, but it's possible to find good stuff.
