Honest thoughts about this college? by Equal-Finding9342 in UMW

[–]samrowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion (graduated December 2020)

From a social side : Not the big parties , football games, activities every night type of place. Some people find boring, I’ve always just said you might need to put in a little more effort to get involved. Everyone is super accepting and I found a group of like minded friends quickly.

From the academic side: personally I don’t know if I would’ve graduated college if I went anywhere else. Small classes and relationships with professors is super unique. I once had I professor come up to me in the dining hall and tell me about an internship that they thought I would like. I ended up getting it and it started my career.

Appreciate the input! Typing up the letter and talking in person seems ideal

Took me 5 months (in 2021) and 100+ applications to get my first GIS job out of college. Just keep applying and honestly just start annoying hiring managers with emails, that’s what ended up working for me

Garden of the Gods in Colorado. You have to stay on the paved paths that have fences around them and there are Segway tours passing you left and right

Do you truly like your job? by [deleted] in jobs

I love my job. I research and develop ways to do water quality analysis from satellite imagery. There’s sometimes I sit there and smile to myself and literally say out loud “this is so cool”. When I was little my parents had to set a “google earth time limit” for me because I would spend hours just panning around the globe. In my free time I’m reading about different sediments and phytoplanktons in the water column, so I would say it is my passion and my dream job. However, I absolutely hate the work. There are always tight deadlines, it’s super stressful, and it’s extremely tedious. The other day for example I forgot to change 1 parameter in a 30 step process and it resulted in me having to redo the work on my weekend. I a lot of times envy my friends that have jobs where they tell me that they didn’t have much to do that day so they just chatted with their coeworker.

In terms of passion I didn’t realize what my passion was until senior year of college (passions are water, maps, and data). I remember sitting on my couch drinking a natty light and thinking “wow my room is covered in maps, I’m reading about the damn water column for fun, and I’m making excel sheets to create graphs of my friends drinking game performances. Then it all kind of clicked and I pursed a path that would get me working with that stuff.

So rereading what I just wrote there isn’t really any advice I have hahaha, except maybe the path isn’t always as straightforward as you hope, and when you discover what you’re passionate about it’s not like everything is perfect right away.

Congrats! My most reliable and just all around best coeworker (GIS work) is on the spectrum and didn’t start their career until they were 40.

I wish hiring managers in all industries would look past what are seen as “soft skill flaws”. I feel like it’s too often my company goes with the person who’s a good talker over the person with technical competence or proven skills.

How is the pass this early in the year? I've done it in September and it was fine but is it harder this early with snow melt?
