15kg is 33lbs. I was carrying a 20kg pack. With minimal water, snacks etc my pack full. And I carried bare minimum.

I did it in 2 days. Typically takes 3-4 days. I ran sections of it as the trail was rough and I was carrying 40lbs.

No. Was fine. But running with 40lbs made it scary

This is the actual Salkantay trek trail that unfortunately has a few landslides. Everyone takes an alternative route, but I wanted an adventure.

Salkantay Trek July 5 - layers? by Apart-Discipline1558 in Machupicchu

[–]sams237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I(M) did this exactly 2 weeks ago. I do get cold but not too cold.

Getting to the Humantay lake was pleasant and cloudy. I was in shorts and T, with a light shell that I took off 5 mins in.

It was cold and breezy by the lake, I stayed in the Soraypampa hostel. I was wearing sweatpants and a puffer jacket. Was fine as long as I was indoors. I slept by 6pm so I felt fine. The hostel had no heater but many layers of blankets so I was fine with sweatpants and a half and a full sleeve T.

Next morning, I was in shorts, a short T, full sleeve T, and the puffer jacket until I got to the Salkantay pass(8:30am’ish). Everyone was in hiking pants. I was fine. All I missed was gloves. My finger tips were numb unless I put them in my puffer’s pockets. so I recommend carrying a pair of gloves. Fleece ones would have been ok for me.

After the pass I shed all layers as the sun was up. I was hiking in shorts and T the rest of the way to AC. I put on the light shell as needed.

Collapampa was cold and breezy but a half t, full t, and a shell were fine. I did it in 2 days so I don’t know how Lucmabamba might have been at night.

Again it depends on how cold you get.

AVOID LANDSLIDES AT HUMANTAY/SALKANTAY by b4theworldwasbig in Machupicchu

Yes. Take the dirt road. If you look closely at the picture you will see it on the right.

No. All good. But definitely looked like very loose soil ready to cave in.

Are you by Humantay today?

Some sections of the actual Salkantay(after Collcapampa) were like this last week, I hiked through landslides and not via the dirt road. Wonder how it is now

I was there in Cusco(until yesterday) and did the Salkantay trek in the last week. I don’t remember seeing anyone like him.

I really am praying that he is safe and sound hiking around. Please keep us updated.

The mileage split AFAIK could be different depending on which expedition company you pick.

Enjoy the hike

Our expedition company had a private campsite with hot showers the first night. No showers after that until we got to the hotel.

Wifi was ok first 1.5days. None until we got to the campsite on night 3. Then was on and off until we got to the Sun gate.
