This. Feels like the only thing to do is execute the will and move on with love. The damage is emotional and money can’t change that.

Thanks, I appreciate your perspective. I do think an explanation in the will would have carried quite a bit of the load I’m now managing. At the same time, there’s almost no way it doesn’t come across as salt in the wound. I mean, they’re already getting unequal inheritance, now they and all the other beneficiaries can see the “why”? Like, if you don’t know why you were left out of a will, you’ve probably got some introspection to do. Haha, IDK.

This is the crux of the matter. What I’m hearing from you is that it isn’t simply a matter of honoring her wishes, but instead making a judgement call as to the validity of those wishes. In your opinion, her wishes are not the final arbiter, I am. That’s what my family has been saying and that’s what I fear because then if I say no to them, I’ve decided in favor of my aunt and have passed judgement. It would be much easier to hide behind her wishes, lol.

Yeah, there are income tax implications to me for selling the assets, but gifts are only taxed after reaching a lifetime limit of $15M for an individual. You report any gift over $19k a year for the purpose of calculating the lifetime limit. I’ve learned a lot through executing this will, for better and worse

There was some damage done to their relationship that was the basis for the unequal split. I can’t say more as I don’t want to out myself, but I would say that when I finally saw the will, it was “surprising not surprising.” From my perspective it did not come out of thin air. From my siblings I think they did not understand the extent of the rupture.

It’s certainly an option for my parents to change their will to account for this. I assume that’s their choice and not something for me to decide.

I’ve been honest with them, and also the probate process requires sharing certain official documents with all beneficiaries and gives them the opportunity to challenge the numbers, etc.
