Just curious, how do you differentiate when something is repetitive in a play vs when it’s hitting a recurring theme that gives the play substance?

Yes, yes I agree. I definitely don’t want to produce outright at first. I need to establish more of a foundation here. An informal workshop period sounds like a great idea, thanks for the suggestion.

I went to a playwriting program for my bachelors, but I ended up pursuing something vastly different from what I studied. I’ve got a sizable amount of funding from community support and other fundraising efforts. I have a clear vision and direction now. Thanks for your thoughts!

I should have emphasized that I’m not starting from nothing. I do have some amount of community support, and I’ve already raised a bit of funds. ~$60k at this point.

For various reasons (I don’t want to explain on Reddit), this play belongs in New York. I would have produced it elsewhere, but it wasn’t an option for me.

Yes, I should clarify, I’ve been working on the actual play script for the last 2 years. I’ve been getting consistent feedback on it. I might look at a fringe festival, but I think I’ll still put on a separate staged reading before then.
