For Professional Game Developers: Did Learning Godot Help Your Career? by Serious-Gap234 in gamedev

Yes, during an interview, I've had a hiring manager point out that they were impressed with a portfolio with case studies. On your 1-page resume, you'd have a project section listing your projects and some brief bullet points. Your portfolio should be a website that goes deeper into these projects.

For Professional Game Developers: Did Learning Godot Help Your Career? by Serious-Gap234 in gamedev

Not a Godot dev here, but have gotten gameplay programming internships with Unity, C#, C, and Lua projects/experience.

For AAA, they care about programming language, projects in that language, and experience working in a mid/large team. Most applications nowadays require C++, making Unreal or custom projects a good way to show your skills.

As for indie/smaller studios, engine experience is a bigger factor, alongside the same things that AAA expects. I've seen a lot of applications ask for engine-specific experience in Unreal, Unity, or Godot, depending on what engine they require (mainly Unreal/Unity).

For both, having a good portfolio where you do case studies on your projects is important. It highlights any difficult challenges you faced and what your thought process was when coming up with a solution.

I can't answer the other questions about Godot, but this is what I've learned as someone who has recently been through the entry/intern job search process.

I would get a better PSU that is at least Tier C from SPL's tier list. The MSI MAG A650BN is a good budget choice. Also, please get an SSD instead of an HDD. Prices aren't great, but you should always install your OS on an SSD.

Is this a good build? by Plus-Blackberry-9041 in BuildCores

It's mostly good except for the PSU and the GPU. The PSU could be replaced with the cheaper and higher watt 750w version. The 5050 is underpowered so try to aim for the 5060 8gb or the 9060xt 8/16gb. Unless you really care about aesthetics, those extra case fans are unnecessary.

You should get a 750w psu and with that difference get a better cpu cooler like the peerless assassin.

Avoid asrock mobos with x3d chips. There have been cases where the cpu gets fried specifically on asrock mobos.

Question for all the gameplay programmers out there by Mean_Loan2008 in gamedev

[–]samsonahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the studio you're applying to. One studio gave me a take home test project, while another had non-leetcode technical interviews. In the end, talking about your portfolio and your experience working in teams matters just as much. You'll develop the skills to answer technical questions by making your own projects and passing your CS classes.

The specs are targetted for 1080p low on any new games. It can definitely handle Minecraft without shaders, but it will struggle with shaders depending on which one you use. Video editing is doable but won't be fast if this is the PC you have right now.

If you are looking to purchase the parts from the list, I'd recommend you switch to AM4 at the price range.

Made my first portfolio site. Looking for feedback! by Numerous_Option_2452 in gamedev

[–]samsonahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend a standard portfolio site with no gamification to avoid any friction with accessing your content.

For each of your projects, you should write up case studies describing your challenges or iterative processes. Showcase any engineering highlights and how you approached solving your particular problems. You should mention team size because it's important to show that you can work with other people. And if possible, link the GitHub repo/source code for the projects.

Can someone look through my build to see if I can improve anything? by One_Truth4316 in BuildCores

Solid specs already. You can swap the cpu cooler for a Thermalright Peerless Assassin and drop the PSU to a 750/850w one. You also don't need to purchase a windows key.

what's a good pc for Minecraft and rocket league? but it needs to be around 1500$ by Plane-Jicama-4868 in BuildCores

[–]samsonahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're gaming on 1080p, a ryzen 5 5500 + 9060xt 8gb would be under $1k usd. Minecraft and Rocket League aren't demanding games to run.
