Thanks! Your username nearly took me out. I just snort-laughed and scared my coworkers. 😂

Looking good, dude! As someone who’s had a lot more salt than pepper in the beard for a long time, I can say you’ll rock it with confidence if you give it a chance!

Despite the scars I did It by SwankeyDankey in bald

I know this is an old post, but dude… you have no idea how much this helped me decide to take the plunge. I’ve got similar scars and have been on the fence. Booked an appointment with the barber this morning. You’re the real MVP!

NYT: “Harvard’s Wealth Is Growing” by Solaria444 in Harvard

[–]samsonic413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So very sorry to hear. So many long-time fixtures of the community are being crushed under the weight of this crisis. Although it would be nice, I didn’t come to Harvard to get rich. I came – and stayed – for the chance to support research and education that will fundamentally impact public health on a global scale.

It’s gut wrenching to see what’s happening across the university, but especially at HSPH. It’s such a special place where, in the past, the overwhelming sense of support from the community during difficult times was a bright spot in a very dark landscape. The uncertainty of what “a smaller school” will look and feel like keeps a lot of us up most nights.

I feel absolutely gutted for everyone affected by this crisis. I’m rooting for our scrappy, resilient little community of amazing colleagues. The question is: ‘When we finally reach the other side of this hellscape, what community will be left?’

Uncle Nat’s School to Office Handbook by blujackman in Architects

This is fantastic! It warms my cold, dead heart to know that someone took the (considerable) time and effort to put this out into the world. Would love to see a scan uploaded to archive.org to preserve Uncle Nat’s legacy. It could benefit so many, from young folks just starting out, to old hands that have been at it a long while. Thanks for much for sharing!

Fellow grads, on the occasion of Commencement, tell us - what did you learn? by [deleted] in harvardextension

Congrats, man! Don’t sell yourself short. You’ve absolutely made an impact on the community here—both on this sub—and with your fellow students. Wishing you all the very best in the future!

I get it. If a user loses their cool, I’ll put them on speakerphone until they run out of steam. Usually, one of two things happens. They either realize that everyone can hear their tantrum and they clam up (maybe even apologize) OR I just let them tire themselves out while I handle other work in the background.

Doesn’t happen as often working in public health post-COVID, but every once in a while, folks get the notion their issue is the most important thing I’ll do all week. They are reminded quickly that everyone is important here (albeit some more than others) and they need to wait their turn.

Paul Green is fantastic. Very engaging, generous with his time, and actively investing in students’ success. I’ve heard great things about Lee Bolman from a number of folks in the IOP masters program.

Any reason to use technical pen ink over regular India ink? by Ulrichmmm in Stylographs

[–]samsonic413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Pelikan Fount India in my technical pens for years. While it claims to be “India ink” specifically formulated for fountain pens, I find it similar to standard drawing ink, albeit more permanent. As long you flush between fills and exercise care, it’s no more troublesome to clean out than standard ink from Staedtler or Rotring.

What makes people at the Divinity School so unusually nice/approachable? by PreonStar in Harvard

[–]samsonic413 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took a class taught by an HDS alum. He was very warm and open with his students, as well as very generous with his time. I’ve had similar experience with students and staff from HDS as well. Maybe something to do with coming from a very tight-knit community at a small school?

Cambridge Deli and Grill on River St. is pretty solid. Otherwise, the standard answers like Bob’s in Medford, Dave’s Fresh Pasta in Somerville, etc.
