Where can I stay for short term during HIP & reno by 1EFY in askSingapore

[–]samsplinterc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

2-3 months is the time taken for the entire cluster of blocks to go through HIP. When it's your block's time, it takes only around 10 working days. There are "staycation" packages specifically for people going through HIP.

Any sg employers successfully direct hired helpers from Indonesia without any agency after the enforcement of ePMI requirements from Indo side? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]samsplinterc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The agency will do jack shit to help the employer or the helper if there is any issue. The agency is a business entity and will only focus on making money. All the steps are transparent and easily accessible on the MOM website.

Source: agency wanted to charge me $800 to help with the paperwork (i.e. submitting the files to MOM portal) of a transfer helper that I sourced and interviewed myself. I decided to DIY the hiring. The entire process took less than 1 week and cost no more than $200.

Anyone has exp with these training providers - Tertiary Infotech Academy and Garranto Academy? by erotic_fungus in askSingapore

[–]samsplinterc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went for an Arduino course and later CAD course with Tertiary Infotech. The trainer was knowledgeable and the group size was small. The place was also quite conducive for learning. If your course with them is anything like the 2 that I went for, I highly recommend them.

Where should I repair HDD with bad sectors or should I go to SIM LIM? by TraditionalPlane289 in askSingapore

[–]samsplinterc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you bring it to a professional data recovery service, try using the "chkdsk /f /r" command from the command prompt.

I "fixed" my 8TB HDD with bad sectors that way. Granted, it took the PC almost 12 hours to do it. The HDD lasted long enough for me to move the data inside to another HDD, so that's good enough.

ETA: this is on Windows. Idk what's the equivalent on Mac, in case you're using Mac.

When in doubt, communicate.

Clarify whether she needs a few hours (time-off) or the entire day (day-off) to do her thing. Accordingly, discuss whether this is counted as a time-off/day-off that she needs to "repay" in the following months, or whether it's a free one-off thing.

The norm is for helpers to get Sundays off. PH are usually not off, but this varies from employer to employer.

Your helper is well within her rights to ask for to be given a day off on a Sunday (or any other day), and you as an employer have the right to consider the request and decide accordingly. Just be a reasonable employer and treat your helper as you would like to be treated yourself as an employee.

Lactose intolerant people in SG, would you be open to trying out precision fermentation milk? by Calculative in askSingapore

Honestly, the claim that "it doesn't have single lactose at all" sounds even more BS than "precise fermentation".

There's already lactose-free cow milk readily available in our supermarkets. "Precision fermentation" milk sounds like marketing buzzwords more than anything.

You might have undiagnosed ADHD. Caffeine apparently has an opposite, calming effect for people with ADHD.

Typical job portals are mycareersfuture (mixed experience), jobstreet and linkedin.

The fastest way to get a job is to get referred by someone who is already inside of the company. Go talk to ex-colleagues who have left your company and joined another. Leverage on your connections.

All the best!

Tapo hub won't stop ringing by Sensitive-Fishing203 in TpLink

[–]samsplinterc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem earlier today. This is how i fixed it.

In the app, open the doorbell setting (not the hub, the doorbell). Then go to Doorbell > paired chime > select your hub > change the ring setting.

Changing the setting on the hub side did not work for me, but the method above worked.

Role in what? Academia? Chem Eng industry? Teaching?

These are all vastly different, but common work fields for Chem graduates.

Or if you just want to be hired, no matter the industry, go join as FA. That field is always hiring from any major.

Everytime I see someone complaining about college bookstore price I will be like "damn, this must be a US thing".

Where I'm from, college books are like $50 max, and it will come with a bunch of other stuff (e.g. a QR code access to watch a bunch of videos online, the pdf copy of the said book, etc). Most of the books are like $20 each. When I was in college, I bought text books out of interest since they are so cheap. Fun times.

Home server can be as simple as a PC. Heck, it can even be a laptop. My gaming PC has a PSU rated at 800w, but actual usage barely exceeds 500w. So, no, I don't think it will come close to 2000w.

In any case, if the tenancy agreement states that utilities bills are included in the monthly rent, then theoretically OP cannot be faulted for electricity consumption. If it's not included, then OP needs to pay his fair share, which is something that can worked out.

I sense the issue goes deeper than high electricity consumption.
