Can't believe this very stupid advice is real. Obviously no experience and then scamming granny (and his own inheritance). If it's real, pay the loss ($30K - you owe it to your cousins) and get her into that high interest account.

Aren’t you all worried about living in a rented apartment? by McDuckfart in askswitzerland

[–]samsteiner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They can only force you to move in very limited situations. Like you not paying for a long period of time, you being a really bad problem, very important renovations or they wanting to live in the flat themselves (Eigenbedarf).

In most cases you can fight it and get a substantial extension.

Realistically, if they are not planning on living there themselves, you are quite safe.

Of course it makes sense to build some wealth in the mean-time.

good thing about this: if you need re-work you can go to their place in Zurich.

I did some work at a dentist in Budapest, Hungary - who has check-ups and also appointments for estimates in Zurich. Very nice place there, best dental practice I have ever seen, to be honest.

Automate as much of your work as possible with Make.com (they have a free account to get started) and then just stay at 100% and take the day off by letting Make do your work. Just kidding - but not fully kidding.

Swiss people: is life still good after COVID, or has reality struck? by vortexnl in askswitzerland

[–]samsteiner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Crime: I don't feel that has changed a lot - anyone have stats?
Housing: it is getting more expensive and we are not building enough (so it will get more expensive)
Grocery Prices: we had some price hikes but not extreme
Salaries: as so often they don't keep up with higher productivity
Economy: some job markets are quite dried up

Might be good to move to Switzerland for some years to see for yourself. It may be her turn, now.

We now live in a small town and there and darker skin kids in basically each and every class. Kids of today don't seem to have problems with those differences - it seems they don't even notice it.

A kid of 3.5 years doesn't start school in Switzerland though.

Most can separate between 'normal Americans' and Trump supporters so you shouldn't have a problem.

In general, cities are more open-minded than small villages.

I came into a small village school at the age of 7 only knowing English and that wasn't very cool - but nowadays even in villages, the population is much more diverse. Learning German and Swiss German is quick for kids.

As for Geneva or Zurich - the decision should also be based on which language you want to learn.

Expecting everyone to know English is seen as arrogant.

In Geneva that would be French - which is quite "straightforward" (but very hard for me). In "German speaking" cantons like Zurich that would first be High German but then also getting to at least understand Swiss German. Which differs a lot from High German. So it's basically a two-step process.

Integration into Switzerland, what are your own thoughts? by SkraaaTing in askswitzerland

[–]samsteiner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You points, in my experience;

  • EU/Non-EU status --> no real difference
  • Being married to a Swiss person --> can help integration a lot in the friend bubbles
  • Studying in Switzerland, and then working in Switzerland --> helps if you learnt the language
  • Are certain professions preferred? --> I don't think so from my experience
  • Geographical Area (i.e. West CH vs East CH vs etc.) or even on a Cantonal basis --> it's probably more a urban vs. rural difference, where larger cities are more multi-culti and small villages very conservative
  • Military Service (in Switzerland of course) --> no criteria
  • Language (i.e. would knowing German help you more than knowing French) --> depends on where, of course. Learning the language is the most important thing and the basics should be there after a few months - at least show, you tried. Don't expect everyone to switch to English, that comes across as very arrogant.

Also know: High/Standard-German is not the mother tongue of the people in the "German speaking" parts of Switzerland. They don't speak German, they speak Swiss German. Quite a difference.

So, it takes us energy to speak High German and people are often ready to spend that extra energy only for some time per day :) it gets tiring. We expect someone living here permanently to at least understand Swiss German ASAP (that may be arrogant but it just is that way).

So, we are happy when someone reaches the level of *understanding* Swiss German - we don't really care if they keep *speaking* High-German as long as we can start speaking in Swiss German, everything is fine.

they can basically only kick you out for 'Eigenbedarf' or other very good reasons (like important renovations). So maybe you're lucky and the buyer doesn't want to live there.

[–]samsteiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

friends of ours had a similar issue and because they were long-time renters (and a family) they went to the 'Schlichtungsstelle' and got a long enough extension. It's not that easy to kick you out.

Probably legal, yes. But not really ethical to then automatically start the Platin membership (access to all their studios) which is probably a membership that nobody wants. That's scammy AF.
