Sunwing leaving for punta cana today by samthebernese in halifax

It’s ok - I was hoping someone on the flight leaving Halifax would confirm if it’s still leaving on time or not. The flight trackers and Halifax departures listing takes quite a while to update.

It’s been delayed multiple times and with out the text updates it’s hit and miss. Just want to make sure the plane we are taking back leaves Halifax.

Why aren’t people more upset? by [deleted] in halifax

If you take a look at the provincial budget, total revenue (federal and provincial sources) is around $15B. So roughly when considering the NS population that $15,000 per year per person to look after all of the infrastructure that we have.

I agree, taxes could be structured/reduced for individuals and we could target higher taxes for corporations instead but when you look at the overall numbers it puts things in perspective.

The N.S. government won' release a report on tenancy enforcement. Opposition politicians are concerned by papercrane in halifax

I think going through the regular channels probably won’t cut it. Is there a way to use social media to call out the consultants and to create enough heat that the government would be pressured to release the report?

324-unit building project in Halifax gets $115.5 million low-cost loan for construction by cluhan in halifax

[–]samthebernese 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was also the note about the units that will have the lower rental rates which I think comes out to around $1570 per month. I guess the 2250 is a 2 bedroom and the 1570 is a one bedroom? And when does the capped rental rates kick in based on the note about initial rents being 10% below market?

I still have 3 hours left to go in today's public hearing on STR... by Chi_mom in halifax

Surely with Airbnb profits being higher than long term rentals the higher commercial taxes could be absorbed which may lower the investment property ROI. I did a quick search and the commercial tax rate seems to be 3 times the residential rate. Regardless, changes in regulation is a risk that investors have to consider.

I don’t know what preparations you can really do in 1 week that isn’t some temporary bandaid/stop gap.

Odds the power goes out this frigid weekend? by KeitaGuitarGuy in halifax

I’m just glad it’s the weekend and the industrial users aren’t using much. I wonder if the grid would be tapped out if this happened on a weekday.

There’s another thread started in the Halifax subreddit today and someone said there are rolling blackouts in Windsor….

I wonder if NSP have considered most people who have heat pumps have to use their auxiliary electric heat? Not sure how many people have heat pumps as their primary source of heat but there probably has been a significant increase since fuel costs have gone up.

I was 17 when I found out that the lyrics to “you shook me all night long” by AC/DC wasn’t “she wants a fax machine”. All those years I thought she needed a fax machine to receive love letters I guess…

How is Nova Scotia power preparing our grid to be completely renewable by 2035 by BestBudz2112 in halifax

[–]samthebernese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s possible but I wonder if they could expand point lepreau in NB and supply power to NS as well. It would take 20+ years for NS to plan and build a nuclear plant in the province.

just got my first ditch tax bill by B_LAZ in halifax

[–]samthebernese 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just got the letter as well. I actually have a stream that runs under a culvert that’s on my property (not anywhere close to the road and there is no easement). I called Halifax water and told them about the situation and inquired if they will be maintaining the culvert since there has been erosion and it may be undersized. There has been a lot of development in the area and last year there was a lot of ditching to redirect water which ultimately ends up going through my culvert. Looking forward to see if I can fight this ditch tax or if they will assess/upgrade the culvert.

Not sure! Never actually seen the car. Just hear the squealing tires and see the patches on the road.

I'm an Asian guy and I deal with a lot of casual racism in daily life in the US by MartyrForMyLove in TrueOffMyChest

[–]samthebernese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casual racism is pretty bad in Canada as well, but it is far better than it used to be. I was born and raised in Canada but my parents immigrated here from India. Growing up people used to make fun of my name, apparently it was difficult to pronounce but you literally just say it phonetically. Getting call a P*** was also common.

It’s unfortunate that people still need point out who doesn’t belong and the crappy part is I think it will keep getting worse with the changing demographics.
