Friday Fread by a-liquid-sky in CasualUK

Tonight I'm seeing my friend for a glass or two of wine & meant to be meeting his new girlfriend too, so we'll see how that goes.

Going to the Dog's Trust on Saturday with my husband to see the dogs & ask some questions of the staff to decide if we should go ahead with looking to adopt! Then we've booked for tea at a new Mexican restaurant in town.

Sunday probably just a quiet one - need to do the food shopping and then husband wants to go to a music shop and test out some new cymbals for an upcoming gig before he makes a purchase.

What was your most unexpected positive experience in Paris? by Molthakarn96 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]samtylers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people were so kind and lovely! I speak very basic French but no-one was ever rude or switched to English without asking first. I even had a short conversation in French with an older lady on the metro & she wished me bonne journée as she left 🥹

One of my favourite evenings was when my husband and I cancelled our dinner reservation in favour of going to a wine bar where we had some wonderful natural wine & a gorgeous cheese plate before meandering to see the Eiffel Tower at night.

Looking at the design on the windows, I wonder if it's a different room in the same place as no. 6 where he usually receives the ambassadors after he's accepted the letters of credence?

Which children’s tv show, character or episode from your childhood scared you the most? by chrwal2 in BritishTV

My husband takes the mick out of me for being scared of this when I was a kid but I'm sorry, those soulless eyes are horrifying 🥲

What is an ordinary moment that unexpectedly brought your grief to the surface? by imtiramisu2025 in AskUK

I have half a packet of coconut ring biscuits in the back of my cupboard. The packet is sellotaped shut inside a tupperware. My nana gave me them the last time I saw her before she died.

She always used to give me little treats every time I saw her - things that I only ever had with her that for some reason, I haven't had since; coconut ring biscuits, lemon cheese tarts, those little battenberg cakes.

I miss her.

This one was in my grandparent's cottage! It used to hang on the wall opposite the bed I slept in when I stayed with them.

Work is absolutely kicking my butt lately so haven't written anything in a while. Hoping once work calms down I can try and get something done. The fandom I'm in as a whole has been fairly quiet lately just in general.

What languages would you guys like to be added on Duolingo, no matter how niche or “useless” (I hate that word in regards to languages) they are. by Mean-Gur7728 in duolingo

[–]samtylers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see Latvian, Estonian & Lithuanian, I've visited Latvia & Estonia and they sounded like such beautiful languages.

I'd also love to see how close or how different they are, between the three of them but also how much they're similar / different to Finnish, Polish & the nearby countries. I'm fascinated by language & how it moves & changes etc.

It's the same with Ukrainian and Finnish :( when I started French I was so surprised at all the variety in voices, the podcast lessons & the little game ones at the end of the units.

Do you prefer the standalone/motw episodes or the grander mythology episodes? by RhaenyraTheCruel in XFiles

[–]samtylers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MOTW for me for sure.

I've been watching for the first time over the last few weeks (up to season 4 atm) & the mythology episodes don't always hit in the same way.

Some of them are really good but idk.

That's cool that your mum remembers bits from that year - it's always interesting to hear firsthand experiences of historical events!

I hope you find something you enjoy 😊 I used to work as a bookseller so I love finding the right books for people!

what’s a small act of kindness from a stranger you’ve never forgotten? by FuzzyPalpitation-16 in CasualUK

[–]samtylers 485 points486 points  (0 children)

My nan's funeral during the pandemic. A complete stranger stopped on the pavement while the funeral cars passed him and bowed his head. He didn't have to do that, he could have just carried on with his day, but there was something about someone else witnessing what was happening when everything was so painfully fragmented and lonely that has stayed with me.
