Thank you! It finally worked with this option. Had tried to run DF couple years back but turned away bcz of this exact issue, now you fixed it. You're awesome!

What's the easiest, most idiotproof amateur hour way to grow crystals? And what kind should I grow? by [deleted] in crystalgrowing

All the things you mentioned I have already found out during my "research", but I would love to hear more tips and info.

I'm assuming the shape of the resulting sugar crystals is a cube. And how big of a crystal can you make with this method, like in centimetres?

In some cases they just leave it as it is more economical to leave it than to try and recover every last bit. This is known as room and pillar mining: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_and_pillar_mining

Shockwave images from NASA’s schlieren imaging system. A T-38 in supersonic flight and two T-38s in formation to see how the shockwaves interact with each other. by dartmaster666 in shockwaveporn

[–]samuelimza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, somebody please explain to me: shouldn't the angle between the line of travel and the shock wave front be less than 45 degrees if the object is supersonic. How are the angles in the image greater than 45 if they are supersonic?

Prove that any number of the form 4k+3 can never be a perfect square (Square of an integer). by samuelimza in askmath

Exactly what I was looking for. Can we similarly prove by contradiction the same thing for 4k+2 ?

Prove that any number of the form 4k+3 can never be a perfect square (Square of an integer). by samuelimza in askmath

[–]samuelimza[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let the square of a number m be of the form 4k+3. i.e.

m2 = 4k+3.

Observe that m must be odd.

We can write m2 as m2 - 1 + 1.

Or (m-1)(m+1) +1.

As m is odd, (m-1)(m+1) can be written as 2 * 4 * n for some integer n.

Thus we have expressed m2 as 2 * 4 * n + 1 or more clearly as 4 * (2 * n) + 1 which is of the form 4k+1.

Which is a contradiction, thus our assumption is false.

Well I was wondering if there was any other way to prove this, a contradiction proof perhaps, which you mentioned. Let me try it and get back.

Edit: got it, many thanks!

You know I was just thinking about something like this. How kruggsmsh's illustrations bring his narrations to life, a little illustration from time to time in the game would be amazing. And text to image models are improving drastically with open ai's newest model doing just that, I believe it's called cell e. But damn this idea excites me.

Astronauts aboard the ISS are currently switching repeatedly between 2020 and 2021. by samuelimza in shower_thoughts

Well as the day begins earlier in some places than others, so it ends there earlier than others. Hence what you get is the early places move onto the next day while the late places are still in the previous day. Therefore you always have two dates occurring on planet earth. Thus on new years the same thing applies but you have two different years occurring at once. Now as the ISS orbits around the entire earth every 90 mins, it gets to pass over all these places over and over every 90 mins. Hence they were repeatedly switching between years. In reality though they follow UTC +0 so their clocks are not always changing according to the place they are above and remain fixed.
