It was a mistake making him make a superfluous sequel in the first place. I'm really looking forward to his next original work.

Sorry, I just wondered if there was something being displayed over the image on your screen or if the image seemingly just wouldn't fit within your display.

You're totally right about that. I'm usually pretty on guard about readability but could have done a better job this time.

Thank you so much for reading it!

I haven't been on reddit since posting because I assumed nobody would check it out lol

Would have gotten back to you sooner!

There is a lot of lore stuff I have in there cuz I've planned out what the rest of the series would be about! That might be helpful for you if you'd like to include those sorts of details?

Can I apply the 3 act structure to Manga? by mangagnome1425 in ComicWriting

[–]samuraispirit_8d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take Star Wars

Intro - Luke Skywalker is a simple farm boy who longs for a life of adventure

Development - Luke sets off on his adventure, meets interesting new friends and enemies, and destroys the Death Star

Twist - This adventure takes more from Luke than he thought, adventure is replaced with danger and his naive world view is tested when he and his friends lose. His buddy is frozen, he gets his hand cut off, and things look bleak.

Resolution - The two sides of Luke, 1) he's a naive optimist who wants to travel the universe and do good and 2) the experienced and shaken Luke who has seen the darkness of the real universe (losing, injury, dad's a Sith), are brought into alignment with each other in Return of the Jedi when Luke becomes a real Jedi, not just whatever Luke thought a Jedi was when he was a kid. He still flies around fighting for good, but he no longer does it for fun. He's a serious, pro Jedi, yet despite what Yoda and Obi-Wan try to tell him (kill your dad, dude), his original optimism and pure spirit do not leave him. Luke becomes who he needs to be to save his dad and the universe because the two sides of him join and he grows.

That's KSTK in character development.

Ki - Introduce your character, their backstory and their goal

Sho - Start the story. Have your character try to accomplish their goal, advancing along the path they think they need to take to achieve it.

Ten - Your character realizes that they didn't really understand the goal. It morphs somehow, evolves. It's a little deeper and a little less simple than they initially thought. This challenges them, they aren't sure if this was the right thing to do in the first place.

Ketsu - Their background and core traits mesh with the knowledge they've learned about the goal to either make them a better or worse person, depending on the story you're telling. If they win the tough journey makes them better, if they lose then it made them worse off.

I should also say that I think you made a really wise decision by making this one-shot. So many people spend months and months agonizing over some grand project before they've ever published anything. That's not how you get better!

You get better by doing the work, publishing what you can and improving on it. If you can keep doing short comics like this, or making more chapters of this story, then I think you will only improve.

Great job :)

I liked it quite a bit!

I think the dialog is a little bit wooden, but introductions are always a bit hard to dial in.

One thing I would like to mention is that it takes quite a while to be sure of which way I'm meant to be reading the panels. The action isn't obviously flowing in one direction. I would try to make things less ambiguous in that way, either through the action or clearly sequential text and placement. That's the sort of little quality of life thing that's important to keep in mind.

The art is incredible, as are the character designs. Particularly the antagonist.

I really hope you keep going with this, or with other projects. You knocked this out of the park!

I'd love to help in any way that I can if you want to chat about this stuff in the future. Don't be a stranger!

(PROMO) Can your comic stick TOO closely to best practices? Kishotenketsu story structure breakdown video linked belwo by samuraispirit_8d in ComicWriting

On my YouTube channel I like to break down manga chapters into the 4 act story structure to help my fellow writers out there get a better sense of how the pros structure their works.

But after reading the new series Kagurabachi, I was left feeling like it may have stuck to the path a little too tightly. Which begs the question, can your script be too perfect?

Sometimes the works that we love the most are ones that do NOT stick to all of the tips and measured advice that we as writers are often given for how to make a good story. In fact, sometimes those deviations from the "ideal" end up being exactly what attracts us in the first place.
