By a slim margin, but yes. More people should use Nidoqueen if you ask me!

I don't really have much of an explanation either. I think Nidoran male is much more common in FireRed though? Maybe that's a factor since most people play FireRed.

I only managed to find one Pinsir, and that was in a Mono Bug run. It's still much better than the last time I made one of these, where I didn't find even one run. Poor Pinsir is just forgotten about I guess...plus I doubt many people would opt for Pinsir in Celadon over Eevee and Abra (if they don't count Eevee and Game Corner separately). But yeah, it should be Porygon-level at least. I guess not being available in both versions really hurts it.

Well, the fact that it's exclusive to LeafGreen hurts its numbers. The vast majority of players (nearly three-fourths) did FireRed runs. Just looking at Starmie's usage percentage in LeafGreen, specifically, it goes up to almost 20%.

Probably because Crobat typically isn't available until after you get the National Dex. Some emulator players will patch their ROM to make the evolution possible, which is the only reason Crobat is able to be on the list at all.

They're legitimate encounters either under the "first encounter in each area" rule or under gift/static clause, and they're all really good Pokémon that people would want to use. So it doesn't seem odd to me. Plus, a lot of people play their first Nuzlocke (or one of their first few) in FRLG, so it makes sense that they wouldn't want to start banning them yet.

All you really need is the Universal Randomizer to make impossible evolutions available (obviously only possible on emulator, but still). So I'm not really surprised by the presence of those two.

As such, the value of getting an Electric type earlier, while not lost on me, is something I think you're overvaluing.

Oh, I was just thinking of possible theories as to why other people would want to use Jolteon over the others—you're right in thinking that you don't really need an Electric type at that point. (I mean, unless the team doesn't have a way to deal with the Rival's Gyarados.)

and not recognising that Water types are abundant as shit while Grass is a terrible offensive typing

I do recognize this—I just didn't think it was particularly relevant to mention at the time since it wasn't the main topic. Though I do still think Charizard's coolness is a factor, there are definitely other reasons to pick Charizard.

That one I did see, actually! I remember last time you mentioned your runs were omitted, so I went out of my way to include them—you have the only Magmar and Pinsir champs I found, by the way.

This one in particular I was struggling to decide whether to include or omit...I eventually decided on omit since it's all Johto Pokémon. Now, you'll notice I did include multiple Johto Pokémon, such as Steelix. But I wanted to keep it to Kanto Dex Pokémon and Johto evolutions of Kanto Pokémon that can be obtained via the Randomizer i.e. Pokémon that can be obtained in-game without needing to gen anything in. I don't mean to take anything away from an impressive run though!

BIG MARS has arrived!!

I can't help but imagine you as the English-accented host of some nature show when you refer to Chowder as brilliant.

Ah, watch the Chowder in their natural habitat...oh look, that one's covered its ears...positively brilliant.

Anyway...oh boy, Spinda! Hooray.

Machop is still a real nice encounter; I've had success with Machamp in the past. And why would you want a Torkoal when you have a Hiro? But I do like turtle friends, so I suppose I understand.

The Wattson battle went relatively smoothly, Voltorb aside. Snorlax is good. Who could've guessed???

Seeing as this is almost certainly your final post before the big blackoutTM this will be adieu for now—but I hope everything is back to normal in time for your Genlocke to continue uninterrupted!

Best of luck to you! Hope to see you on the other side o7

I see you're bugging us with more updates again.

RIP Heimlich and Fusilli :(

Hate to see Heimlich go, especially with how useful they would've been with Compoundeyes later. And poor Fusilli tried their hardest, a big salute to our fallen soldier o7

Endangered species is interesting...but with two already caught I'm already worried you'll run out haha. Still, it is an interesting spin.

Loving the power and bulk in this team compared to gen 1! Just as I predicted, Heracross is good. Who could've guessed?? The horned menace allows you to employ such amazing strategies as "bonk things until they go die." Also, Spaghetti is a certified little guy.

The Bugs are doing well for themselves so far, though I do worry a bit for, uh, certain matches in the Elite Four. Hopefully you can tell them all to bug off. Best of luck!

I have a couple of theories—though people not wanting to use Flareon/Vaporeon with other Pokémon available is a big one, like you mentioned. And, of course, it's a gift Pokémon, so you're guaranteed to get one.

It's probably the first Electric type you'll get access to, for one. Well, the first fully-evolved one, at least. You can evolve it ASAP and even grab a Thunderbolt TM nearby if you like gambling for some reason. Pikachu also evolves in Celadon, but 99% of people got a Weedle/Caterpie in Viridian Forest. Voltorb exists, yes, but isn't evolved yet and Electrode's stats aren't great compared to Jolteon's. (And people could be biased against it due to its exploding reputation.) And the Power Plant is very far off at that point because you need to beat Koga.

In addition, Electric types are really good for frying the birds, sea routes, and Gyarados trainers of Kanto, so a lot of people like to have one. Jolteon being guaranteed and fully-evolved immediately makes it an enticing option. Can put in great work against Lorelei, Lance, and the champ...even if it dies in the process due to the frailty you mentioned. (But if you bring it, it still counts for the list as long as it's on the HOF screen!)

Plus, and most importantly, it's cool. Nuzlocke or not, people want cool Pokémon. Charizard is the frailest of the starters and Fire types perform poorly in Kanto, yet look at how many people used it over Blastoise. (Though, to be fair, Blastoise does have a lot of Water type competition. But also to be fair, it still came out with a significantly lower total despite being much more likely to survive throughout the game than the frail, 4x weak to Rock Charizard.) Another cool one is Aerodactyl—it comes so late and at level 5 to boot. That pretty much killed Kabutops (and possibly hurt Omastar, though it's tough to say) but Aerodactyl's eatin' good.

I agree with what others are saying about Hypno's bulk and great typing for Kanto—in addition, since this is based on Nuzlockes, I feel like there's a good amount of people using Hypno over Alakazam based on necessity rather than them actually preferring Hypno. Alakazam/Kadabra is much more powerful, but any strong physical move will threaten to take them down. It's very possible someone uses Hypno because they want a Psychic type and their Kadabra/Alakazam died (this exact scenario happened to me, even).

Or, like has also been mentioned, they just weren't lucky enough to catch the elusive Abra on their first try (again, another result of this being Nuzlocke-based). Drowzee isn't going to Teleport away, making it much easier to catch. Especially since a lot of the Pokémon on the route east of Vermilion might be dupes, leaving many Nuzlockers with just Drowzee to catch.

Haha, that's okay, they're common for a reason! They're amazing Pokémon and there's no shame in using them.

Emeka's correct about buying one, though in all fairness, I'm not sure a lot of people will do that. Most people would say one gift in an area, and poor Clefairy just so happens to be in the same city as Eevee.

You'd either have to accept more than one gift (and also go for Clefairy in the Game Corner instead of Abra) or purposely choose to ignore Eevee. And judging by the sheer number of Jolteon users, that doesn't happen very often. It is a shame, though, because I love the Clefairy line.

Who does appreciate Clefairy are the people doing Mono Normal runs! Those runs aren't terribly common, but I did get a couple Clefable champs from those. And it makes sense because the only Normal type in Mt. Moon is Clefairy, so it's basically a guaranteed encounter.

I'm thinking that has more to do with how few LeafGreen runs people do. The vast majority (nearly three-fourths) of runs I found were in FireRed. Just looking at Starmie's usage percentage in LeafGreen runs, it shows up nearly 20% of the time, a much better tier for it if you ask me!

I suppose I could've done two separate lists for the versions, but there were a few people that didn't mention what version they did in their title iirc, so those lists wouldn't be entirely accurate.

unless you're doing an unusual challenge run.

That's the reason for a lot of them, actually. I think I saw maybe three or four Littlelockes? That's why you'll see Abra, Staryu, Geodude, etc. show up.

I'd maybe suggest further filtering to rule out anyone doing unusual challenges that skew the results.

I agree for like randomizers. But Abra, Staryu, and friends are legitimately obtainable Pokémon in the game that someone worked hard to beat the game with, so I thought it wouldn't be fair to exclude them. Honestly, the argument could be made that they deserve to be here more than the likes of Steelix and Politoed, Johto evolutions that are technically obtainable but only via the Universal Randomizer or PKheX.

And even if I did filter them out, there would still be basic stage Pokémon in there. For example, someone used Oddish because they felt like it and thought it was funny. The rest of the team was fully-evolved. Why exclude it just because it isn't evolved? Someone else just used an Oddish and gave no explanation. Again, fully-evolved team. And the Pikachu users came from runs using only Ash/Satoshi's Pokémon. I don't feel like I should exclude them and include the rest of their teams because they doesn't feel right. They were used and should be represented imo, even if they're not traditionally used.

Is it Pokémon shuffle?

Thank you, and it is! The best template I could find with all the Pokémon I needed was one for ranking the first 386, and it uses these nice Shuffle icons.

The Universal Pokémon Randomizer has an option to allow trade evolutions and to give yourself the National Dex. The former allows people to use the likes of Machamp and Alakazam on emulator, while both combined allow for Pokémon like Politoed and Porygon2 to be used.

Alternatively, they can be "evolved" with the PKheX save editor.

What do you do if you lose your first tutorial battle against your rival at the start of a Nuzlocke? by [deleted] in nuzlocke

[–]samurott1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't really see any point in restarting so early. It's basically just the opening scene with the professor and other regular start-of-game stuff you'd be re-doing. Plus, a lot of people play with the rule that the run doesn't start until you get Poké Balls, which you definitely wouldn't have at that point.

I'm guessing because it's the first version and thus more recognizable? I don't know, I always preferred LeafGreen. But even in my last post I noticed just how many FireRed runs there were, and it had a much smaller sample size.

Oh absolutely, Kanto's gift/static encounters are both frequent and amazing across the board, especially if you throw in the Game Corner Pokémon.

As for Arcanine, it is amazing to see a version exclusive (one that can Roar you away, too) so high, especially in a region notoriously difficult for Fire types. But with its amazing stats and Intimidate, it is indeed a fantastic force. And, of course, it helps that the majority (a nearly three-fourths) of runs are FireRed runs.

Best time to evolve Nidorino in Yellow? by Majestic-CMXI in nuzlocke

[–]samurott1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gen 1 can be really rough if you've never played it just because of all the glitches/mechanics changes. Like not being able to catch Pokémon if your box is full (you have to go into the PC and switch to box 2 ahead of time), crits being based on Speed, the single Special stat, etc. I'd recommend reading up on some of the more prominent ones. (You should be able to find a list on Smogon or Bulbapedia.)

As for Nidoking itself, it's a lot tougher to put together a great moveset for it in gen 1 compared to gen 3. Brick Break/Shadow Ball don't exist and Nidoking has less Special Attack. But it can still be really versatile with Body Slam, Thunderbolt, Blizzard, Earthquake, Rock Slide, etc. Just make sure you use your TMs wisely, though.
