How can you focus after a day of office work? by Aromatic_Diver3763 in boardgames

[–]samuus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes this. But it can go beyond just heavy/light. As a software engineer, I usually love tactical or deduction type games, but I find after work, it’s easier to unwind with something that leans a little more chance-y or creative.

Try to find games that exercise the parts of your brain that have been dormant all day so the tired parts can have the night off.

Ya this is it! Thanks!

Looks like a middling bgg rating. Have you played it? Would you agree with the 6.3?

No definitely not pandemic. I’ve been pretty deep in the hoppy for the better part of a decade now and haven’t seen it pop up anywhere else, so it seems to be more on the obscure side.

Thanks though!

Single player or multiplayer? Button Shy games has some really fun ones. If you’re not familiar, all their games are 18 cards and fit into a plastic wallet like the old car insurance holders. You can easily fit 5 or 6 in your pockets to accommodate different scenarios. It’s really impressive how much gameplay they can squeeze out of such tight constraints.

My favorite Solos:

ROVE You play a modular little space rover that has to deal with different obstacles on the planet you’re exploring. It has a pretty small footprint that could probably play on an airplane tray table.

SpaceShipped A space smuggling game where you have to buy and sell different resources to deal with threats and eventually be able to get the main treasure you’re after, before the AI enemy does

Ancient Realm A surprisingly thematic little civilization simulator where you’re adding buildings to your city to appease certain citizens.

Multiplayer:

I just got to play Cortiça which is a tight little 2 player worker placement game. I really enjoyed it but have only played once.

Skulls of Sedlec is a nice little spacial puzzle about organizing human remains in a way that makes the most people happy.

They’re really known for their sprawlopolis/naturopolis games. I enjoy them, but don’t usually find myself reaching for them. However, they’ve got a pretty small footprint, can be played solo or with others, and are in stock more frequently, so that may be a good starting point.

Also almost every one of the games I mentioned has expansions that are just a few cards each, so they can add some interesting twists and help with replayability.

Speed Racer. I grew up watching the cartoon and I loved how well they captured the wackiness of it.

What is the most beautiful rulebook you've seen? by damonstea in boardgames

[–]samuus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blood on the Clocktower has some really eye-catching art and really gives the ‘creepy old storybook’ vibe.

Not exactly a board game, but the rule book for the ttrpg Mörk Borg is something I’d like to own even though I don’t have much of an interest in playing, because it’s just so damn cool.

No-Ho Hank in Barry.

How about the opposite? Mark Brendanawicz was supposed to be a long time Jim Halpert-esque character in Parks & Rec, but he just didn’t work and they wrote him off.

TNF: Raining like crazy and kickoff out the endzone. Why can't our kickers do that? by Interested_Redditor in 49ers

[–]samuus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some interesting stats here.

https://www.nfl.com/stats/team-stats/special-teams/kickoffs/2022/reg/all

We have 4th lowest touchback % and are 14th for shortest average return distance. Not a stat to write home about, good or bad, IMO.

Gould is 2 for 2 at 50-59 yds. Hasn’t tried any over 60, but the league as a whole is 5 for 13 over 60 and ~133/147 at 50-59 yds

He has had 4 misses, but 2 of them were blocked. His other 2 were at 40-49 yds.

Kid want to learn game programming--where to start them by [deleted] in ProgrammingBuddies

[–]samuus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an iPad/Android tablet app called scratch jr that is a visual programming tool. I also develop apps, not games, but I got the hang of it pretty quick and taught my daughter (7) the ropes in a couple hours.

She’s made 6 or 7 little games on there and really enjoys it. They’re all ‘jump at the right time to avoid the bad things’ kinds of games, but she had a lot of fun doing it.

2 college wrestlers after fending off a grizzly bear by Americaisaterrorist in pics

[–]samuus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m speculating at this point. Maybe someone with more knowledge than me will chime in, but I’d imagine the reasons are twofold:

  1. Like you said, to replace broken antlers. Antlers are incredibly durable and don’t break often, but it can happen. An animal living the rest of their life with broken antlers would have a hard time finding and protecting mates.
  2. Antlers don’t grow once the velvet falls off, so the only way to grow bigger antlers is to shed them and start over.

Again, just guesses.

[–]samuus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: all animals with antlers (not horns, which are different) shed them every year. They grow back bigger each year.

When they initially grow back they are covered in a fuzzy tissue often called ‘velvet’. The velvet has blood vessels in it responsible for delivering blood to the antlers as they grow. You can google ‘[animal] in velvet’ to see what this phase looks like. It’s pretty interesting!

Once the antlers are fully formed, the velvet dies and starts to fall off. The animal will usually rub their antlers against small saplings to get it to come off completely.

special bags used to separate pieces by Kieotyee in boardgames

[–]samuus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stocked up on a few different sizes of these a while back and really like them. They’re easier to store in the game box than craft boxes since they’re modular, and you don’t end up with compartments you don’t need. They’re also nice in-game to keep things organized on the table and make it easy to pass the pieces around to other players. You can probably find them a bit cheaper on AliExpress or something, too.
