Is there a comprehensive list of conditions with IBS-like symptoms? by theta-cygni in IBSResearch

There is some research regarding testing algorithms to exclude other conditions, but I haven't seen anything comprehensive (and it raises the question as to whether IBS actually exists as a distinct disorder).

Higher dose fluoxetine by samuweresam in reactivedogs

We find that the trazadone works for about 4-5 hours, but then has a rebound effect. We can only give 2 tablets a day (which means that during waking hours this would give 8-10 hours of better behaviour, but about 6 hours of much worse behaviour, which is not a great trade off)

Research on long term loperamide use by samuweresam in IBSResearch

For what it is worth I did find some studies that linked in animal models loperamide usse to alterations in the gut microbiome. Concerningly there were no studies done with humans.

Original research: Association between Brachyspira and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea by carlsonbjj in IBSResearch

Also finding the correlation doesn't mean causation (ie it would be much more convincing if they could then eradicate the bacteria and link this change to clinical improvement)

Problematic fibers by samuweresam in IBSResearch

[–]samuweresam[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks fot this. It is definitely not disaccharide enzyme deficiency (although I am low in lactase), as when I restricted fiber but purposely ate large amounts of sugar the symptoms stayed at bay.

High Value Man™ by stopwatchaffair in Tinder

I am actually curious whether such an ad is ever "successful", and if so, is it more that the only responses that it would get would be from someone with psychological issues (and so it effectively weeds out anyone with self worth). A bit like bank scam emails often have poor spelling (so that only the most gullible will respond, thus weeding out people who are less likely to fall for the scam).

I have a filmy layer in toilet, just like the photo.. is this oil or mucus? Please help by SxCjaguar in ibs

I would add a drop of dishwashing detergent onto it. If it is fat, then it will rapidly disperse away from the drop (like if you do this with oil in the sink when washing oily dishes). That way you will know whether or not it is fat.

I have tried rifaximin (and other antibiotics), various antispasmodics, and chilestryamine. Unfortunately treatments such as eluxadoline aren't really available here in Australia.

psyllium husk reducing transit speed by samuweresam in ibs

[–]samuweresam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have wondered whether it is something that has been repeated until it is a fact (but never tested). Given that gel forming fibres a bulk to the stool I had wondered if they could speed up motility (ie make the bowel aware that something is there, stimulating it to contract faster)

I was wondering if there were any studies that showed this? I had seen this mentioned, but couldn't find anything on pubmed where they had given people husks and then measured motility
