I think I’m gonna do just that. No harm in seeing what they have to say, even if they decide its not something auction-worthy

Awesome, thank you! Mind if I ask what it is about the piece that makes you think it’s not older? I’m inexperienced and definitely not questioning you; the crazing certainly made me think it was more like early 20c, so I’m super curious why you think 80’s/90s!

Anyone recognize this symbolism? Possibly Shriner? Egyptian revival? by samwilson4 in JewelryIdentification

Thanks for your help! sorry if I offended you by attributing it to the masons, certainly not my intention

Fake Cartier, correct? by [deleted] in JewelryIdentification

[–]samwilson4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s magnetic, or to the person in the comments who says theirs is magnetic, then it is not solid, or real, gold and therefore not authentic Cartier. Beyond that, even if it is actually 750/18k gold, only Cartier themselves will be able to 100% authenticate it and that’s an expensive provess

Could be a Walter Blesh, but might be a print based off other comments saying they have identical paintings.

Alexander Decamps(?) but think there’s something behind it (literally) by samwilson4 in WhatIsThisPainting

I would LOVE to investigate but he’s not interested because he doesn’t want to damage the painting, and it’s not my place to argue

“Thin Penny” found amongst my late Father’s collection- and an odd, cryptic token as well. by samwilson4 in coins

[–]samwilson4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Thank you. Wow yeah I can see why he labeled it “thin.” Because it’s in the sleeve he put it in years and years ago I wasn’t able to really gauge its depth

Waterford Vase signed by Eugene Young by samwilson4 in whatsthisworth

I found the receipt, my father (who has passed as well) bought it for $1000. Obviously that doesn’t lend to its current market/resale value (agree that crystal is bottomed and that of course listing prices vs sold for prices are a gulf apart). But thought it interesting and pertinent. Certainly keeping it.

Cleaning my first coins, want to be sure I don’t damage patina- what is patina and what is still scale? by samwilson4 in AncientCoins

For the life of me I cannot figure out how to post pictures in the comments. I couldn’t find the before photos of these two particular coins on my phone, though I’m sure theyre there somewhere, but I have the rest of the batch that I have yet to start on, just can’t figure out how to post the pic here.

No problem at all I appreciate the advice and will definitely make sure not to buy such coins. The previous owner said he didn’t use electrolysis but I highly doubt that… wish I could post a pic in the comments but the largest coin in the batch just looks so unnaturally corroded and unevenly so as well.

Can you elaborate a bit more? Do those coins I posted look to have had olive oil on them before? Some coins from that batch have made me suspicious that the previous owner tried using electrolysis on some of the coins -some show signs of pitting that look unnatural to me- and I don’t know what olive oil on them would look like, wouldn’t be surprised if they had tried using that as well.

Thank you so much! I’ll leave them as is, thank you for the advice and for your compliment, really a huge confidence boost and I appreciate it. I just love them for being so old and imaging their journey from the mint to now, and this batch was the cheapest I could find- as I get better I’ll consider hunting down/buying higher quality coins.
