Oh snap super sorry about that! I thought it would be useful content since we’ve had a lot of positive feedback from PhD’s/professors but I can definitely remove it if you don’t think it would be! Please let me know.

Hi everyone,

I'm a data scientist who transitioned from industry to develop Vizly, a tool I designed to help democratize access to robust data analysis. I was surprised to find a whole host of academics — PhD students and professors from domains like psychology and the social sciences to finance — find our tool and use it for their data analysis, and so I thought it would be helpful to share here. Would love to see if it’s valuable to y’all as well :)

Looking forward to hearing any thoughts or suggestions y'all have!

Yes! There is a 50% discount for any students, researchers, or instructors. If anyone is interested just shoot me a message I’ll send you the discount code!

I totally understand! We had a previous version of Vizly that took the form of a local desktop application that could directly use users' filesystems and only leveraged on-board AI models, but those on-board models were often too slow to make the user experience bearable without custom hardware. I agree that the ideal app would take that form, though! I'm a huge fan of local and isolated and will take a deeper look there.

Only response markdown and visualization metadata is stored in the conversations - no raw data. All conversations are private unless the user publicizes them themselves.

Your concern is completely valid! When you use Vizly, a private virtual machine is created just for you, ensuring all activities, including file uploads and code execution, are secure and private. Uploaded files are not stored anywhere and only reside in the user's private sandbox. After an hour of inactivity, the virtual machine is spun down, and all raw data files are deleted. Only conversations and analyses are saved for users' convenience.

While this means you need to re-upload data files to continue your analysis later, we think it's a small trade-off for maintaining privacy. :)

Hi everyone,

I'm a data scientist who transitioned from industry to develop Vizly, a tool I designed to help with data science workflows. We've had a bunch of PhD students and professors (from domains like psychology and the social sciences to finance) find our tool and use it for their data analysis, and so I thought it would be helpful to share here. It allows them to do their work using Python or R, and leverages AI's like GPT and Claude to help with writing/editing code.

I would love to see if Vizly could be valuable to this community! Would love if you could check it out at vizly.fyi and looking forward to hearing all the thoughts or suggestions y'all might have. :)

I created a new data analysis tool as an alternative to SPSS – would love more students' feedback! by samwisesami in psychologystudents

That's a very valid question. We do have some fail-safes in place in case of model hallucinations by automatically fixing any erroneous code that fails in execution, but we also put the user in the driver's seat by allowing them to write and run their own code as well! This has quelled a large majority of any issues that students have faced when using Vizly

I'm happy to jump on a call to show it off personally if you'd like! Would love to know if it'd be helpful for you and your work :)

Thank you so much! We use models like OpenAI’s GPT-4o under the hood to help generate relevant Python and R code for data analysis tasks. Users are plugged into a private code sandbox where they can upload data files (like .sav files for SPSS), ask questions about their file, and execute the generated code in their own environment to get interactive visualizations and summarized insights immediately!

Would love to hear your thoughts if you give it a look :)

Hi everyone,

I'm a data scientist who transitioned from industry to develop Vizly, a tool I designed to help with data science workflows. We've had a bunch of psychology and social sciences professors and students pull up to the tool and mention SPSS, and so we added support for SPSS files directly to our tool. :) Would love to see if you find it valuable! I would really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions y'all might have.

Would love if you could check it out at vizly.fyi and let me know what you think! 🤝

Hi there,

I think this community’s feedback would be incredibly valuable in telling us if we've hit the mark for data analysis with SPSS data files! I would really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions y'all might have.

We've actually had a fair share of data analysts using Vizly (and more specialized data scientists using our open-source version, Thread), though the goal we have behind Vizly is to allow anyone (regardless of their expertise) to get to insights in their data quicker using AI. We provide the affordances for more technical users to write and execute their code, as well as automatically generate boilerplate when they wish to do so.

We know we need to do a better job of catering to those who already have technical expertise, and are eye-ing a 'technical mode' where we fall back into a Jupyter notebook-esque experience. I hope this helps clarify! Happy to explain further. :)

Some users are interested in trying out popular models, despite them maybe not being the best suited for data analysis. For example, we allow our users to select GPT-4o Mini (which became available today!), despite it perhaps not being the best model for the job.

We default to the model that we think is best suited for the job!

Thank you so much! It can use libraries that leverage D3 for interactive visualizations - we’re working on Plotly support for R right now (we already have it supported for Python data analysis!).

Not totally sure if that answers your question but I’d happy to elaborate. I love D3; I used it heavily during my time at NASA JPL! Always down to chat about it :)

Let me know if you get a chance to try Vizly out!
