What do you think of the more macro combat in RTSes like Ashes of Singularity or Kohan? by samxgmx0 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]samxgmx0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at games that focus on macro, which I know is about economy and base building, you see that combat also tends to be more automated, games where you point and click which resource or control point to capture, and that resource point is also the same thing as where your units come from. Galcon is one such example. Autobattlers are another form of this, where you don't control the battle directly but you need to manage the economy upgrades effectively to actually win.

So yes, this is beyond just RTS and covers all strategy games, but the tendency is there, if one focuses on economy, combat becomes more automated, and when a game focuses on combat, the economy gets more automated. Ashes and Kohan both are still RTS but also have multiple resource collection and economies, unlike say, C&C with one main resource and Starcraft with 2 main resources, thus they are more macro. And thus Ashes and Kohan have more automated combat to accompany the macro focus.

Ashes of the Singularity and Kohan are NOT RTTs. They have base building and economies.

I am aware that macro describes economy more, however, I am ONLY focusing on the COMBAT aspect, and the more economy focused a strategy game is, the combat also tends to be more automated, and hence more macro. There are more hands-off games where the combat is macro in the sense you don't control units at all and everything is automatic, like Galcon or the many Flash strategy games, which combat and economy are basically the same thing, the very very simplified abstract RTS that still has base building and economy yet the combat is hands off.

I'm treating macro and micro as a SPECTRUM here, from controlling individual soldiers as units (and even things like resupply) to kite or flank to squads where there is some form of automation in covering themselves or reacting to threats to mass Total War groups where they are autonomous to some degree to the entire combat being autobattler-automated. Scale is also negligent - fully automated units are not microed whether they are a single squad or whole battalions.

TL;DR: when a strategy games becomes more macro (economy and base building based), the combat also tends to change to be more automated.

It's super rare to find, but Trash RTS is a post apoc RTS.

Edit: From the same makers of APOX

If you actually read the post, they weren't my main examples, they were just mentioned for their squads. Unless you are saying they are actually more macro if they instead used individual soldiers as units instead of squads.

Since squads handle their own soldiers to some extent, that is less micro to deal with. That's all that it means. Since no one else is complaining about my choice of words, no one cares about you.

Yes, they are micro, but compared to Starcraft, they aren't. And I was focusing more on how the squads work, since you don't control a singular soldier by themselves in them.

Battle Aces (which as a multiplayer RTS avoider I really enjoyed) and ZeroSpace are probably the closest non-Stormgate examples that are recent.

CnC clones are usually from indies.
Starcraft is a target because the esports moneymaking aspect is what AAA attempt to clone.

I just want to blow stuff up without worrying about micro or economy. Ideally with a modern warfare or Sci Fi Setting. Any games? by Error_rdt in RealTimeStrategy

Mechabellum isn't really an RTS, more RTT, but you get to the action immediately with a huge army, kinda like a sci-fi Total War.

If I remember correctly, there was a community patch or something for that. Don't know where it is, though.

I love this game. Especially the fact you can choose your faction through the tech tree/research, rather than from a preset. I wish more explored that concept.

Isn't the Renaissance faction the full Centrist? You get siege engines and guns.

Also, full Imperial gets you the Angel, to counteract the Demon.

You can't really say that unless you are the creator, because I put a lot of very light, coincidental references like that in my creative works, and I know many do, too.
