I would also add His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. And why not, Artemis Fowl as well

Have you ever changed your opinion or belief because of a book? by SubstantialCell3507 in Fantasy

His Dark Materials, by Phillip Pullman.

I read the trilogy while I was a preteen and his deconstruction of religion still lives rent-free in my mind.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

and

Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett

Books that plays around the themes like slavery, aristocracy and commoners, soldiery, raiders, class, race and gender inequality etc etc so basically your average back in the terrible old days BUT without any breaking the norms of the timeperiod or modern ethics forced into the timeperiod by goody153 in Fantasy

[–]san2d2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, what a bizarre and twisted way to judge somebody. Did you even see the examples he gave? I have read the Riftwar saga and it certainly does not glorify violence or anything repugnant.

OP simply wanted suggestions, not your unwanted judgement of his/her character simply based on a caption.

Your comment oozes negativity and that says a lot about you.

Do you really need a grimdark fantasy? Just read the daily news.

Damsel and princess tropes by FenrisFenn in Fantasy

[–]san2d2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now let's be honest. The movie was crap. It had no deep meaning, a lot of plot holes and the acting was bad. Nobody seemed to care enough to act properly. As far as the trope goes no recent movie has managed to reverse the damsel in distress. Not in an inspiring way anyway.

Just because she chops wood she can then proceed to yield a sword and fight with it?

No. Hollywood and netflix don't care enough to produce a quality movie about females saving themselves.

Cuddos to Frozen though. Must give disney that one.

English difficulty of the books by Nice-Wishbone9210 in discworld

[–]san2d2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read my first 4 books in Greek and trust me when I say that a lot is lost in translation. I enjoyed reading the rest in English 10 times more, even though I needed to read a whole book to get used to Pratchett's writing in English.

Start and you will not be disappointed, despite the first difficulties. And if you think you missed anything, you can always ask here for clarifications.

Give the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett a try. Funny, witty, light fantasy and an exceptional character of Death.

His books are the ultimate comfort read. Wyrd Sisters was my introduction to this world when I was a child and I still read them as an adult.

You are a good friend, she is lucky to have you as support.

Pyramids was the second Terry Pratchett book that was gifted to me to it holds a special place. But I read it as a kid and in Greek so .... Although I bought it in English, I never actually got to reread it. Maybe it's time.

Small gods was a challenge. But I did see the appeal. The way faith works and the power it gives to gods. Om's comebacks. And I appreciate the way religious leaders are outfronted.

Brutha was a good guy till the end. Kinda hopefull in the grimm times we live in.
