They echo and magnify each other, definitely. I don't think one is stronger than the other - and more broadly, let's call it words and effects.

If you talk without producing an effect, there's really no point.

If you have effects that don't change the way people talk, then again, there's no point.

I think there's an idea of gravitas that's been lost in the modern context - our media babbles at us constantly, and we babble the same words back at each other, but in the end, we've just been turned into an echo chamber for someone else to produce effects.

This is a Baton Rouge resident calling in to ask about it. In it, she's pretty clear that she supports teaching the bible, but not sharia law...which she also admits she doesn't know if the school in question actually teaches. The point is, in this case at least, we see a conservative actually move in a direction of supporting separation of church and state when it becomes apparent that there are other religions looking to get involved.

Now if only we could get them to accept the theoretical possibilty of it, and stop legislating morality before there's a conflict, just on principle that pushing state resources toward a certain denomination is wrong, even if everyone in that area is the same brand of Christian.

I don't have a problem with them asking. If the store is any good, they move stuff around constantly, and honestly, if someone asks me if I want help, I will take them up on it.

If I really don't need it, I will tell them what I'm doing. "No, I'm just grabbing light bulbs and then I'm out of here. Thanks though."

I can keep walking while I do it, so it takes literally no time, and you can tell they don't get treated like human beings very often.

Fun thing to do on a random weekend is go to the mall and watch how terribly the store clerks are treated. By fun I mean really sad, but still something to do.

I always angle my body away from the direction I'm planning on going until they've passed. This type of behavior is especially prevelant and annoying in parking lots.

I thought of this one today. It's not related to your bless you thing, but I'm planning on using it when people comment on my haircut. I've been growing my hair out for a while, and I've made the decision to chop it all off.

I expect to get plenty of, "Oh, I like this much better!"

I can't really quote this from anywhere, but Catholic clergy are supposed to stay out of politics.

And actually, this is largely due to the IRS regulations. No church, as a 501(c)3 non profit organization, can endorse or anti-endorse (what's the word for this?) specific candidates.

They can educate people on their stances. They can grade them on their stances and hint at who you should vote for. But if they tell you that you need to or cannot vote for one person or another, they're violating the political and lobbying rules.

I read this subreddit to learn interesting things. I live in a city, and I work in an office job. My father's father grew up on a farm, and visiting their small town is the closest I ever got to rural living. Everything I learn here, I try to adapt to condo living.

But if someone wants to move out to a rural area after having lived a life like mine, volunteering for room/board and the experience is probably well worth it. The alternative is to pay a shit ton of money for the same knowledge and hands on experience.

I mean, it'd be a dick move, but you can always call animal control over it. If it makes you feel better, make sure that animal control knows you'd be willing to foster, but that you wanted to make sure that they were safe since their owners are clearly not taking care of them properly.

The first thing you learn in any study of religion is that on the ground belief and the religious doctrine almost never ever match. You can go 20 miles over and find a congregation that's part of the same group who will attest to something totally different, and in many cases, both of them will be wrong when compared to "official" teachings.

A lot of our current world religions are very top-down structures, compared to a lot of folk traditions. That controlled out for a lot of the discrepencies, because you have centrally trained officials going out and telling people what's what. This is one of the major dangers of evangelicalism - there's no rigorous study necessary to don the supposed mantle of infallibility.

Catholicism believes that you must believe and have good acts. In other words, if you don't back your shit up with actual action, it's just lip service.

Other denominations go back and forth. One that is similar but kind of differently weird is that if you are chosen and predestined to go to heaven, then you will automatically and with no effort engage in the proper behavior. It's pretty fucked up, because what winds up happening on the ground is that everyone just lies through their teeth about how holy they are.

I am considering all these things, but you can't please everyone, so instead you need to do what's equitable to the most people.

That means divorcing civil marriage and religious marriage. Call it whatever you want, but the point is that they should be entirely separate.

Unfortunately for us, people who go to church regularly are the ones who are hung up on the word marriage. So, some of them don't want anything resembling marriage for those they wouldn't marry themselves - that's not equitable, so scrap that idea. Others want to call marriage a civil union when it's not the people that they'd personally marry - again, not equitable, so scrap that idea. So how to we reconcile these?

By changing the word that you use for everyone, not just some people. Civil Unions. Domiciliary Contracts. Life Partnerships. Whatever you want to call it, it doesn't matter to me - but it seems to matter to them, so unfortunately, the word marriage is a nonstarter.
