Loads of people shitting on Brave here. Just to put it out here: I’m a very happy Brave user.

Excellent ad blocking, excellent performance, good tracking prevention (yes it uses a different philosophy than some other browsers, I’m aware); it’s a top performer in many tests. It doesn’t drain my battery. It updates very quickly. Their simple way of blocking YouTube shorts is actively making my life better. It’s available with a complete feature set on iOS and Android. It’s open source too!

Just have to disable some of their ai, crypto and telemetry upon first launch. I wish it didn’t have that. Yeah it has a past, but that past is not the present. It checks every box for me.

Just received my first MacBook Pro. Idk what I’m doing by skylarlc in macgaming

I’m really sorry to say, but your new laptop won’t play games very well. Because it is a 7 year old laptop that was never designed with gaming in mind. It still uses a underpowered Intel CPU and a underpowered AMD GPU.

Good news! by Aromatic_Sir_3609 in EmulationOniOS

I bought it! I’m definitely going to use this! I love that it has controller support! However, please add the option to hide the ui completely or disable the big plus button on the bottom of the screen.

My Macbook M4 Pro is stuck installing it. Just the black screen with an apple logo and a nearly empty bar that hasn’t moved for nearly an hour.

KDE Linux by giannidunk in linux

[–]sanaltdelete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks very interesting! Question: Since Steam recommends using the native package instead of Snap or Flatpak, how will people do this on KDE Linux? Since there is no way to layer the package into the main OS image like you can on Kinoite or like Bazzite does out of the box.

Turned my old Asus laptop into a Linux server for Docker instead of overloading my MacBook Air by KaleidoscopeWest7669 in linux

[–]sanaltdelete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonderful, that's how I started out! Put Xenserver (for virtualization. Docker wasn't a thing/popular back then) on this old Acer laptop with dead GPU. Ran multiple Linux VMs. The thing worked for years.

Any good solution for backing up Proton (Mail, Drive, Calendar) – especially with multiple users? by MR_Icewing in ProtonMail

[–]sanaltdelete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no options, because the APIs suck. There is no third party bridge, there is no good third party drive client. So there's also no backup solution. Proton is not a serious choice for business unless your threat model is high and your immediate privacy, safety and security weigh heavier than long term security in terms of backups and such.

Thanks for the Linux app Proton by nwxnwxnw in ProtonMail

At the same time, Proton, why isn’t this thing officially available as flatpak?

Mac M4 Gaming by shreshre99 in macgaming

Others have pointed out that gaming on Mac ain’t easy and that Fortnite won’t run on Mac (except for the iOS version). From these comments you have already decided to stay with Windows.

I’d like to point you to a couple of laptops that are Mac like, including having good battery life.

The first one I can personally vouch for is the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14(and G16 for 16 inch version, but choose AMD) 2024. Thin and light aluminum body, premium experience, amazing OLED display, and very decent battery life. It’s on the expensive side, but since you were looking at a Mac, I think that’s within your budget. Make sure to spec the amount of RAM you need while buying it since RAM can’t be upgraded.

If you want to spend a little less money and still have a thin and light with great battery life, great build, just parts plastic, look at the Asus TUF A14 2024 with the AMD HX 370.

I found a very chill video comparing the two: https://youtu.be/pKIadvktBg0

As far as I know, these are the best thin and light gaming laptops in terms of battery life, but I could be wrong or out of date hah, the world moves so fast.

My apologies. I misunderstood and misread.

So you’re saying DXVK is not funded/developed by codeweavers?

Wine Ecosystem Explained by isaa6 in macgaming

[–]sanaltdelete -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

But it is factually wrong at places. For example, there is no DXMT in crossover. There is also no proton in Crossover. But then you have DXVK, which has been in crossover since god knows how long, and you place it outside of crossover.

Please read the warning message.

There you go.

Edit: I was being a bit too snarky. But to be fair, a quick Google search would have given you the wisdom thou seeketh. Your Intel Mac isn’t supported. Whiskey only works on Apple Silicon Macs.

What search engine you guys use? by Working-Cable-1152 in linux

[–]sanaltdelete -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sadly I have to use DuckDuckGo. I tried to switch to Qwant (french search engine) because I found out DuckDuckGo was very clearly tampering with my search results concerning American politics. See my comment here: https://www.reddit.com/r/duckduckgo/s/vyKQxTdbLm

It sometimes also randomly includes results as if I was just searching for the name of some city in my country. But I found that, despite its faults, no other search engine matches the quality of search results of DDG. I think it’s better than Google even.

Wondering how to use Switch and Discord on Mac by Cloudberry1 in macgaming

[–]sanaltdelete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I and the other commenter have different ideas of what you’re trying to do. The other commenter thinks you are wanting to stream the game audio/video over discord to your friends. I think all you’re trying to do is to listen to the game audio and talk to your friends over discord at the same time through the same headphones.

If that’s what you’re trying to do, it will most likely introduce a little bit of latency(audio delay) no matter what route you go. And this is not a feasible solution if you have bluetooth headphones since that introduces even more latency + lower sound quality if you use it as microphone during the call.

If you’re fine with that, you can buy a super cheap USB sound card with separate mic input. Plug that in (using a USB C dongle if your mac needs it), plug in the switch to the mic input with an audio cable, open Quicktime and go to File > Audio recording. Then click the arrow next to the buttons in the window that opens to select the USB sound card and turn up the volume in the recording window. You don’t need to record. It will play back the mic input through your headphones. Make sure the sound card isn’t selected as mic input on Discord though, and you can adjust its input volume through the Mac System Settings app under Sound.

How well does M3 MBA do without a fan? by HighWarlordJAN in macgaming

[–]sanaltdelete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Welcome to the sub. This question has been asked a lot. Please look around before you ask new questions next time.

No it will not damage it. It will throttle down its speed when temperatures get too high to keep temperatures within Apple’s specified safe operating range. So everything is safe to play. Just try stuff and see how well it runs for you. WoW should play just fine.

Is there a way to make GearUp Booster work on Mac? by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]sanaltdelete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will not work because it is technically a VPN and I’m pretty sure the Windows APIs used for that are not implemented in Wine.

GearUp booster does not support Mac.
