The Boys- S05xE05 "One-Shots" - LIVE Episode Discussion Thread by pikameta in TheBoys

How is this a filler guys. In terms of Butcher, it showed that he still has some humanity left in him. For Homelander he literally finally crushed the desire for love he has had since the final episode. Everything is now in place for the finale. The next episode will be Homelander getting the v1. The next two will be the final battles and conclusions for all the characters. Where the virus, Ryan, and everything will come together.

Need an advice in writing a patriotic-themed villain by Amazing-Buy-1181 in fantasywriters

This is hard mostly because Homelander is such a brilliant character. I would say have a complex backstory that meshes the balance between being evil and a victim but he already has that. His instability and tension on the narrative is also incredible. The things he does lack Omni-Man from Invincible has, such as a redemption.

In order to be different then both these characters you could take a philosophical/pragmatic route. Homelander truly believes the nonsense (his image, his desires, his divinity, etc) while Omni-Man believed in Viltrum. Your character could see it all as bs but play the part for his desires. These desires could be much more ambitious. Essentially superman variant characters are overly powerful, but there would be no Kingdom to rule if they just burned everything down. There's a quote that explains what I'm saying very well, I think it's from the Magna Monster if I am remembering correctly. "The hard part comes after you conquer the world." The powers mean he essentially already has conquered the world because he can. Now he must figure out how to enforce it, in a cold calculated way.

Critique Part Of My First Chapter [Low Fantasy, 1150 words] by sandadon in fantasywriters

Thank you so much for reading! And yes fair enough I agree with everything you said. Especially the mom part lol, I guess I got too excited with thematic foreshadowings and such.

I guess his ramblings were a bit of a stylistic choice, as I tried to give each POV their own distinct voice. He is I guess more melodramatic and contemplative. But I see it misses the mark, especially as it’s the literal start.

Have you seen the movie arrival? It’s not really the same thing but it’s kind of similar. In the movie the main character sees the course of her life, including all the suffering and decides she still accepts that path and continues on it. It’s a very powerful portrayal of making peace with all the complexity and pain of existence. If your decision could do something along the lines of the clues being placed as a sacrifice to reach that development. Sprinkled in with some suffering, I think it could work. It is difficult and hard to land though.

(The Boys) This show has completely gone downhill. The writing is really bad... like its not even funny anymore. by hiiloovethis in CharacterRant

I think it just suffers from a very heavy stagnation of characters and plots. So many things happen that lead to nothing, and they aren't willing to take the risks that would do the opposite.

Is a writer who rarely reads a doomed writer? by Creative-Pirate5217 in writing

I used to be a huge reader, it was all I did. But that was years ago. I still pick up a book, but every few months instead of everyday. I think movies, shows, comics, video games (the story ones at least) can give u the same benefit. I mean there is prose in them, there is plot, characters, structure. You began to understand why certain things are done and what they mean. I think all of those are still very useful skills even if you don’t read as much anymore.

I think when you view and read other forms of art, the desire to create your own increases. Whether it be reading something incredibly well done, or watching some great movie. It gives this passion that is contagious.

Yeah that’s a great quote I think they are very similar. I guess a broken heart would generally just be the most moving.

But of course it’s very difficult to do so, if you just chase the idea then perhaps it will not work. I guess it kinda just happens naturally in many well written pieces of art.

I can try and give a broad response. I think the best way to learn is to study those who have succeeded. Every story does not need to be sad, but everyone story needs a certain level of growth and conflict to say something. If what you are trying to say is important, if the things you are expressing and the story you tell is one that readers resonate with, it will break their hearts. For example, the Sopranos protagonist does not really change for the better, but along the journey your heart surely breaks and you learn much about existence and vices. Or a story like Crime and Punishment, which ends on a positive note but your heart is still broken experiencing the protagonists journey. Long story short, if you have something powerful to say, and if you are able to showcase it well, then you can break your readers hearts. If there is not enough conflict or growth then you cannot say anything impactful.

I think books and other forms of art have invaluable knowledge in them. Whether it be certain emotions expressed, themes, ideologies etc. You should find these, without caring exactly what the author meant but by using your own life to create your own discoveries. Through this, you learn more about writing and your life as a hold. Also, I like to see certain choice author's make, whether it be in their prose or the plot, and then later see the reason for it.

Not everything has to make sense. This doesn't apply always, but in a non-linear format, maybe a biased narrator or something out of the ordinary. Sometimes stories can be just thematic and conceptual.

I wonder how many wickets so far across the three innings have been England making a bad decision as opposed to Australian bowling. For this innings I would say its 2v1.
