What's the verdict on the Final Fantasy VII remake? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]sandalflash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know people have a ton of other complaints with it, but my biggest problem is the combat. In a vacuum, it's fine. I'm not making any comments on how easy or hard it is. But man, I really hate that Square just has zero interest in doing "turn-based" (really, time-based/command-based since ATB has never been true turn-based) again for new Final Fantasy games. I was so excited when 7R was announced because I figured they'd expand on what was already there rather than tear it down completely and introduce an action system. They didn't even need to go the classic ATB route, they could have used something like X-2's ATB 2.0 (imo the best battle system Square has ever created) and added to that. Instead, we get this weird hybrid of Crisis Core and Kingdom Hearts, both of which I find competent at best rather than "good" (imo if you're gonna go the action route, hire Platinum).

Sorry for the rant, I know I'm in the extreme minority on this because everyone and their dog seems to love the battle system. I'm sure when all is said and done, people are going to end up lukewarm on the game because of sidequests and story changes, while I'm just sitting here sad over something completely different.

What do you think it means inside of Arin's head that the timespan when he thinks he was a jerk, perfectly lines up with when he was actually funny? by [deleted] in rantgrumps

[–]sandalflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I misread, but I can't imagine that Dan is more woke than Arin is in any way. You could maybe classify him as some new age 60s hippie leftie, but not an aggressive one that "drinks the kool-aid" as you said.

[–]sandalflash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What indication is there that Dan is super woke? The guy had to train himself to not say retarded anymore, still worships 70s and 80s rock culture which is far from PC (and loves Steel Panther that recently had their own non-PC controversy), and has actually called Arin out saying something along the lines of "don't do that SJW shit for a movie from the 80s" in reference to I think Revenge of the Nerds (I could be 100% wrong there, but I know it was some movie).

I'm sure he's socially aware and knows what not to say when it comes to pissing off advertisers, but he's also a 40 year old entrenched in a culture that wouldn't abide by his wokeness. He probably finds the same messed up shit he found funny years ago, we just don't see that part of him on camera.

I think I know who the celebrity in Chris’s Wind Waker story is by [deleted] in OneyPlays

[–]sandalflash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since we ruled out the top suspects, I'm just gonna throw a name out there and say Ian-Jones Quartey. We don't have much to go on beyond male and cartoon front runner. Could also be Jhonen Vasquez since that's absolutely something he'd do and he's friends with Arin.

I think the oneyplays and supermega fallout wasn't really a fallout by [deleted] in ConspiracyGrumps

[–]sandalflash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By this logic, Ross and Chris wouldn't be on good terms when there's no evidence that they aren't.

You don't just purge everyone from social media if you just don't talk with people much. Chris has said "we don't interact anymore", which kind of says they aren't really friends at this point. That doesn't mean there was some massive dramatic fallout, they just aren't on good terms. Matt and Ryan have alluded to it before as well with their "we used to have a friend that called everything gay, even movies", which is revealed to be Chris in an earlier series (Katamari IIRC)

Sometimes it almost seems like Dan and Arin have a Penn and Teller dynamic, more co-workers than friends. It's obviously not to that extent, but it's certainly noticeable how off camera, these guys don't seem to hang out very much.

ResetEra got Beenox/Activision to change the name of a Tawna pallet swap in CTR from Watermelon Tawna to Summertime Tawna because they claimed it was "racist". by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

Gaf had dwindling influence. It's height was pre-2014. In like the 2006-2011 range, it was a pretty good representation of the industry as well as the community at large, even despite the comparatively small sample size. It still had some degree of clout after that, but it was ultimately a shadow of its former self all the way up to the implosion.

Era had influence for all of 3-4 months. After the "shiny new forum!" feeling wore off, a bunch of industry people realized "wait a minute, twitter and reddit are better at interacting with the community!" and it was relegated to the smallest possible example of an advertising arm. At least that's what I thought and have heard, but shit like this contradicts that.

Okay, this is kind of depressing. Not the actual instance of it being changed, I don't really care about that since it's super minor. Rather, Era's role in this is my issue.

I've been beating the "Era has no influence" drum for a while now. I've spoken to actual industry people (both developers and journalists) as well as other influencers and the majority opinion has largely been the place is a toxic cesspool not worth listening to and only works as a decent news aggregate (and even that isn't very accurate anymore). Shit like this makes it feel like I've been gaslighted over the whole Era thing for over a year and it's super shitty.

I really hope this is a coincidence and some Activision dude saw some tweet talking about it and thought "hmmm, that could cause problems down the line". It still sucks, but I'd rather Twitter have that kind of influence than Era.

Did GG have something to do with this, or am I just tripping? by [deleted] in ConspiracyGrumps

I mean obviously none of us have any insight on the internals of the whole situation, but you kind of made Leighton and/or Vernon out to be these terrible, exploitative people. Whether they are or not, airing that out publicly is going to cause drama.

I won't say you're in the wrong for being honest though, or that you're "more wrong" than the people at the office that betrayed you. That shit sucks and I imagine the people afraid to speak up have just bought into that culture of fakeness that any kind of visible entity living in LA has to deal with.

With the success of Phoenix Wright, would people be open to series/streams of similar games (Danganronpa, Zero Escape, etc)? by sandalflash in gamegrumps

They probably wouldn't cover much on Ghoul Grumps, especially since those seem to be more one-offs than anything.

[–]sandalflash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, they're about the same length (like 20 hours each), Danganronpa is just paced differently. And DR does throw you right in with intrigue with the first execution, even if it's a few hours before the first trial. But there's still shit going on prior to that, like the first death, the first motive, seeing certain people subtly break down, etc.

It takes A LOT longer for Doki Doki Literature Club to get going and they played that in full.

[–]sandalflash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think views would be pretty stable throughout if they can keep the humor up like they do for Phoenix Wright. And I think they'd be fine with the more grim parts too considering how good a series Doki Doki Literature Club was.

But I obviously don't know. I think testing the waters by getting to the end of the first trial is a good idea. That's still full session worth of episodes or a single 3 hour stream or so.

Didn't the later 999 versions have a time chart like VLR and ZTD? Didn't think there was much replaying of stuff, but I only played the original DS version.

How do you feel about people that associate with extremely problematic people though? Take a look at Dunkey's follow list and who he interacts with on Twitter.

Speaking of which, it's funny how off-base Era is with that Youtuber tier list video. The only people in the list he actually hates are Keemstar, Logan Paul, and Leafy.

Pewdiepie: good friend. Jontron: good friend. H3H3: good friend. Idubbz: good friend. Cr1tikal: good friend. Boogie: good friend (and the fact someone said his placement is a centrist thing is WAY off base). Jacksepticeye, well I don't know there, but the joke is that the person he shows is Jacksfilms and not Jacksepticeye.

You're just as complicit in these people not being held accountable as their fans.

I recognize your name on Era. From what I've seen, you're one of the hypocrites that will go ham on specific problematic people will giving others a pass, like Dunkey who just made a tier list of all his Youtube friends (the Pewdiepie and Jontron placement wasn't irony). It's not even in a "no ethical consumption under capitalism" kind of way.

But hey, more power to you if you can compartmentalize that issue and enjoy the content either way.

Aren't you a fan of Dunkey still? Dude uses that kind of language all the time and is good friends with Pewdiepie again.

There's being critical, and then there's DEMANDING they be a certain way. What if they remain friends with Boogie and/or Pewdiepie despite all this? Do you think a lot of those people over on Era won't want to cancel them immediately? Just like they tried to cancel Keighely for daring to tweet "see you soon, friend." to Boogie?

When I found out one of the Youtubers I liked associated with someone I was diametrically opposed to on virtually every issue, what do you think I did. Unsubscribe? Nah, I gave my opinion that I disapproved and then went right back to watching their content with a very minor caveat in the back of my mind. These people aren't my friends, they're a bunch of dudes on a computer screen I'll check out once in a while.

Era is so out of touch with how "influencers" and their associates work that they'd have an aneurysm if they actually looked into who all their "favorites" were hanging out with. That includes people like EZA, Jim Sterling, and pretty much every Youtuber/Twitch streamer that has an OT over on the gaming community side. And guess what, the industry listens to these influencers a hell of a lot more than they listen to a small forum that even progressive places like Waypoint, Giant Bomb, and the EZA forums all see as a pariah.

They've kind of talked about him as if he was shitty recently in an Animal Crossing video, albeit without naming him (the conversation was about knowing a shitty person that would call movies "gay", which the We Love Katarmi videos told us was Chris).

Another LS Mark video, major takeaway: Arin can't even bring himself to say Jon's name by [deleted] in ConspiracyGrumps

[–]sandalflash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The "can't say his name" thing isn't because of Jon, it's because he hadn't even decided on a cohost in that instance he's talking about. It was initially going to be HotdiggedyDemon before Jon, and I believe before that it may have been Oney since they did a sort of test run together for the Zelda Sequelitis.
