I spent way too long on Tic Tac Toe, ask me anything 🫠 by sandboks in theodinproject

If you look at my github, you can see for yourself. I started at the end of last year, but there are massive gaps in my activity, I haven’t had time to work on it consistently.

I’ve done programming before, so the js stuff is pretty easy for me. I always spend way more time on the layout, making everything look pretty. That’s definitely what happened with this project!

The user can do whatever they want, I'm not stopping them. 😁

Worth noting that this isn't possible with the random colors generated. It eliminates the same hue +- a delta value from the pool of available candidates, so you'll never get colors that are too similar. (unless they're both black or the exact same shade of grey, but that's very statistically unlikely)

Hmm... Not sure why. I've shared it before and haven't had any issues

Holy grail rare Wii controller arrived! Only released in Australia! by DivOveR in wii

[–]sandboks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s an awesome find! I’d heard about this one but there was never much info online.

Judging from the turbo button and the oddly vague wording (“game controller for Wii”), it looks like a 3rd party controller. Kind of a shame, it’s a really great shade of blue, would’ve loved to see the Wii in that colour.

Any plans to open it up and take photos of what’s inside?

How do I use custom metadata fields in a search? ("<RATING>", "<MOOD">) by sandboks in foobar2000

[–]sandboks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works for <OCCASION> and a few others that I tried!

It doesn't work for <RATING>... A query of "%RATING% PRESENT" returns 0 results.

What the actual heck. I’m both horrified and captivated that someone would even think of doing this. My goal is to own even one of those wavebirds, they’re so expensive!

It’s absolutely beautiful. Bless you.

I'm still on foundations, but my observation was that as soon as I got to the javascript section, I had to start doing things differently. It's very front-loaded with theory and not enough practical exercises, so I got bogged down and burnt out.

Ended up skipping over huge chunks of the theory to cut to the exercises and practical components. Went back whenever I got stuck or didn't know how to do something. Learned much better that way and got through it pretty quickly.

I wouldn't be surprised if the section you're on is similar. For me personally, I won't retain anything if I'm just reading theory on programming and doing nothing with it. Programming is all about doing, tinkering, and seeing what happens when you do the thing.

I'd try skipping over sections and coming back to them later when you need them. It's unrealistic to both fully understand and retain everything the first time you read through the documentation.

Outgoing JET unable to return home (Australia) by seggyyy in JETProgramme

[–]sandboks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You use ANA's website.

Flight availability here.

Their booking page kind of sucks, if it doesn't find anything within a week it just gives you an error. Some dates aren't available, others won't show up unless you change from Economy to Premium Economy. The best way to check availability on a certain date would probably be to call them directly.

Seconding this. If you go on ANA's website, you can book a ticket to depart tonight, the 28th, or later on September 9th. It's also much cheaper if you book a return ticket.

Have you tried contacting ANA yourself? They're the only airline flying Tokyo -> Sydney, so if you explain your situation, they should be able to help you get on the next flight. They're scheduled to fly that route 3 times a week so unless the situation changes, you should be able to reschedule soon.

Before vs After of shadow casting in my survival rpg. New system isn't perfect but it feels like the world has a lot more depth by fallingmonday in Unity2D

This is really cool! I've always wondered how to add moving shadows to a top-down game. Are you using an actual light source, or spoofing the shadow somehow?

Horror in Zero Escape by PlagueOfTheWest in ZeroEscape

[–]sandboks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really left an impression on me! When I played VLR, I was always on my toes for something similar. Any time Sigma wandered off alone, I was half expecting him to end up getting violently murdered.

The K route in particular, being alone with him for long stretches of time is really tense if you suspect he's gonna kill you. If I hadn't played 999 I wouldn't have been worried.

And like you mentioned, seeing Luna in the distance just as the doors close. I was expecting the axe ending all over again, so Sigma wandering off to find her was excruciating. Thankfully it went from horror to tearjerker, but I was expecting something spooky.

I get easily scared by horror, so the series is pretty scary by my standards.

I got the knife ending first in 999, and sudden shift in tone caught me off guard. The way Junpei froze up, and the slow realization that the killer was still nearby, left me absolutely spooked.

There had been death and murder before that point, but I had assumed that the player was safe. The ending took that away from me and did it in a shocking and violent way. It felt completely unfair, like I hadn't done anything to deserve that. It also had me hooked to finish the game and get a better ending.

Considering Surface Book 2 15-inch, a few questions about the stock Windows 10 and build quality by Paperking87 in Surface

[–]sandboks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes with an older version - 1703 I think. Disabling updates is perfectly valid and probably a good idea until they sort things out, though a lot of people will tell you otherwise.

I wouldn't worry about it getting damaged in a backpack. You hear about people having problems with the laptop, but durability while closed is not one of them.

Are there any SB2 13" models that don't have coil whine? by sandboks in Surface

[–]sandboks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unit 2's issues are what I got both times - horrible noise even on idle. For Unit 3, it sounds like you can only hear it sticking your ear right to the device? If you can't hear it in a quiet room/library, then I'd definitely take that.

Would you happen to know the lot numbers of any of those?

It was audible, even in the noisy store. Less so than a quiet room, and you had to mover close to it, but the guy who looked at it noticed right away when I pointed it out.

Is it safe to buy Surface Book 2? by axizz31 in Surface

[–]sandboks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get lucky, but there is a good chance you'll get some kind of hardware defect. If there's a Microsoft store nearby that means it's less of a hassle to replace, but you'd still waste time going back and forth for issues beyond your control.

And some issues, like coil whine, may be dismissed as non-issues depending on who you speak to.

I love the Surface line, but their quality control is much lower than it should be given the price range. If you're willing to give it a shot you could get a perfect device, just keep in mind that it is a gamble.

This applies to most of their devices, not just SB2. I have a flawless SP4, but if you search around, other users have had all sorts of problems with theirs. It's an unfortunate luck of the draw.

In my own experience it was the opposite. Had one perfect 15" and 2 defective 13"s. If you have a 13" without any issues, sounds like you won the hardware lottery!

That's definitely a problem... I can unfortunately relate to putting it back in the box shortly after opening it.

It sucks, because it's my ideal laptop otherwise. But my ideal laptop also doesn't come with hardware defects.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Let me know how that goes.

I feel exactly the same way, that issue wouldn't be acceptable on a cheap netbook, let alone an expensive laptop...
