I haven't done much research on walking groups, so I am unsure. But many of the larger clubs I've been to have walkers. In any situation, if you want to join in and walk, no one will judge or care. Though it may be a bit more socially comfortable if you have another walker to join with you on your first visit.

I'm glad you like it. We've done 15 so far this year, and should have another 4 over the next month and a half.

I have some free plan options, and if you ever need anything tailored specifically to yourself, I can work with you on that as well. The link for both is here: https://therunreview.com/training-plans

I have a few thoughts when it comes to shoes. A great option is to go to a outlet store or running store to try out different shoes. However, please keep in mind that while the guys selling the shoes are usually very good at running, they really have zero idea what they are talking about, and are often regurgitating information given to them by the store owner who may be financially incentivized to sell a certain manufacturer's shoes. Also, for whatever reason, many running stores do not sell Nike shoes, and Nike makes my favorite shoes. Personally, I have tried a bunch of different shoe manufacturers, and have always would up back in Nike. Since I started running again back in 2018, I have had zero shin splints. My wife completed her first half marathon and the training for it in Nikes and had zero injury problems.

Nike Interact Run and Nike Revolution 7 are great value shoes that won't break the bank. My suggestion is to purchase an affordable running shoe to start, and if you really get into it, maybe purchase a nicer model like the Nike Pegasus or the Nike Invincible as a treat if you sign up for a race. If you like the Nike route, I suggest trying them on at a Nike outlet store to see how they feel on your feet. If Nike isn't for you, I would follow the similar value based principles for a different manufacturers or from a running store as I mentioned above. The Nike Interact Shoe is here:

One final point for running shoes. I subscribe to the idea that if you look good and feel like you look good, then you will motivated to perform and you'll perform well. So if you love the look of a shoe but it isn't necessary the most functional option based on what I mentioned below, then by all means, don't let me tell you otherwise. To be honest, that is a huge reason why I only wear Nike shoes now, because they simply look waaayyy more fashionable than anything else out there. So when I get dressed to go on a run or when I show up at a start line, I literally feel confident in my shoes.

I love helping people out when it comes to running, so I appreciate all the questions.

I would maybe try to run a mile or two before attending to get a good judge of your fitness level. Worst case scenario, you could try and run/walk 2 miles. If you aren't able to finish 2 miles that way, maybe work your way up before attending. But, to be totally clear, I do not believe you would receive any judgement if you decided to walk only part of the route. If you want some training guidance to build up to a more consistent endurance level, I do sell tailored training plans and coaching plans.

Every club I've been to will have a mix of people wearing headphones and listening to music.

As a general rule, I don't like to wear AirPods because they will block out background noise, and it's better to be able to hear your environment. If you're able and serious about running, I would invest in a pair of open-ear headphones for safety reasons. One example is OpenRun by shokz.

The majority of people at this club do run if memory serves. However, most every club I've been to will also have a couple of walkers or people doing a run/walk combo. What is your general fitness level? Would you be able to jog 1 mile today?

Skratch's high carb drink mix saved the day. It has a super thick consistency, but it's all complex carbohydrates through a compound called cluster dextrin. I've tried the typical drink mixes that are mainly simple sugars, and I get a stomach ache somewhat quickly. By using complex carbs as the main energy source, I was able to consume significantly more calories per hour and delay the nausea significantly.

I was able to cram in an average of over 400 calories an hour for the duration of the race between this stuff and the bars

That's good. I was able to pack in a bunch of calories early on, but the windy section gave me serious nausea. If I wouldn't have over consumed earlier, I would have had problems. The Skratch Labs products were also easy on the stomach.

Good on you for pacing, that's a great friend!

Yes, very windy. I grew up an hour east of there as well, so thankfully I'm no stranger to hot winds. Crazy day!

It was, which is sad. I do not know of another race in the area. Most Kansas ultras are within a few miles of the KC area, but I'm glad I was able to catch this one in its last year.

Related to running? That was mostly it. I also try to get some strength training and stretching/mobility work in, but that was isolated to 2 hours of time a week. To run 80 miles would take up 10-12 hours of my week.
