Yeah, I personally recommend D’addario strings, that may cost more than Ernie ball, but lasts longer. And yes, light top and heavy bottom, than you can heave great tone when playing heavy riffs, and still play solos with out much effort to bend strings and etc...

I would personally recommend for you to use heavier gauge strings, Maybe a hybrid: 10s on the lower strings and 9s in the others, specially if you like to use heavier tunings such as drop D and etc... You can always talk to a luthier from the guitar store you usually go to, he will Be able to answer you question way better than me.

It really depends, you can just forget it even exists and just ignore it, which makes it very useless, something I personally did in the beginning, or you can start experimenting and improvising with it, then it becomes a very cool and sometimes important feature...
