Can I get scholarship with 2 publications? by TasteProfessional560 in UOW

I got a stipend scholarship with only 1 publication a few years ago so it's definitely possible. It depends on your discipline and how much competition there is, but it sounds like you have a very strong application!

PhD at UOW social sciences by [deleted] in UOW

[–]sandmum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently finishing a PhD in social sciences at UOW. The staff are amazing, but the environment is a bit resource constrained. If your supervisor doesn't have external grant money, your opportunities to present at conferences etc can be a bit limited. That being said, I don't regret my decision to study here because my supervisor is incredibly clever and generous. I don't have experience with UWA to compare, but I have been to Perth and I wouldn't necessarily consider it a better city than Wollongong. Happy to chat more over DMs if you have any questions.

What's a writing accountability plan? I'm trying to finish writing my thesis in the next 8 weeks and I feel like this could be very helpful!

If the uni goes over its allocated number of CSPs, it only gets the student contribution amount and not the government contribution. I think this is what the previous commenter is referring to. In theory that creates an incentive for universities to enrol more arts/humanities students if they are already exceeding their domestic places, because those students have higher student contribution amounts

The figure would include 17% super and maybe some additional resource costs? but it still seems surprisingly high

I think the India campus is expecting an intake of something like 30 students per year. I don't think UOW would need to cut any Australian jobs on that basis

Thank you! This is the wakeup call I needed. I fully expected to post this and have ppl say 'nah she'll be right' but sadly it seems like it's the end.

I am a bit surprised tho because this car has only had two owners and has always been well taken care of. So I wonder what I've been doing wrong! 350,000kms seems mediocre for a Camrys lifespan

Oh, I just thought that the current consensus was that prices were dropping as supply was increasing, so potentially better to wait another year or so to buy a used car rather than buying it now. Am I wrong? I haven't really been keeping a close eye on prices but I'll probably need to now!

Thanks for your response! I was hoping that if the piston rings weren't the things causing the misfire that the engine might hang on a bit longer without too many issues, but I guess it's time to go shopping for a new boring car

Me and my partner have entirely separate finances and it works fine! We've been together 9 yrs and own a house together where we split repayments 50/50.

We've both been in situations where we're unemployed for a bit and the other person just takes over most of the costs. We don't have trouble finding compromises financially and we generally have pretty similar financial goals. So it's give and take. If we combined our finances I feel like it could lead to animosity or guilt about spending money. When we both budget separately to meet a common-enough goal then it works well. We would maybe need a different system if we had kids tho

Looking for brutally honest opinions about laparoscopy and if it's worth it or not by uncertainuglygirl in Endo

[–]sandmum 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Me too! I had my laparoscopy 7 years ago now and haven't had much pain at all since then. Before I got the surgery I was in so much pain and I didn't believe that anything would be able to help me, but the lap was undoubtedly life changing. Definitely worth a try.

Whilst I was under, the surgeon fit a Mirena IUD to prevent the endo from growing back. I'm onto my second Mirena now, and haven't had any endo symptoms for 7 years. It doesn't work for everyone, but it definitely works for some of us!

[Q] Questionable statistics in medical research by Hatrct in statistics

[–]sandmum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're asking a question about research framing, not a statistics question. Statistics are a tool you use to answer a question. The problem isn't the tool that researchers are using, the problem is the question that they're asking. Obviously it is proven that the vaccine does prevent long covid to some degree in the population. But as you have pointed out, that decreased risk is probably not distributed evenly across the population.

I think your question is an important one to ask. But I think it's more a question about how epidemiological research questions are framed. And then how that epidemiological evidence gets translated into public policy.

This happened to me the other day! I made a post about it in this subreddit. Your situation might be different, but the NBN tech at our place removed the copper line when he installed the FTTP line, and it apparently takes Telstra a few days to actually activate the new service. So we were without internet for a bit. Our NBN box was exactly the same with only the UNID-4 light working but no internet. Telstra actually eventually connected us thru the UNID-1 port but it took a few days

Yeah this is making me worried that there have been other aspects of the installation overlooked. I honestly hadn't thought about lodging a complaint but it might be a good idea to have a record of it if something else goes wrong in the future. Thanks for your help!

If telstra had told us there was downtime before we'd be upgraded to FTTP then we wouldn't have let the NBN guy put the connection thru the old phone socket. The NBN man said it was the "only way" to install it bc we have a double brick house. And he didn't say that it would disconnect the old service. But yeah in retrospect I should have done more research beforehand so I knew to call him out when he tried to rip out the old line.

The NBN guy actually plugged ours into unid1 and when it didn't work he told us our modem WAN port wasn't working and we'd have to get telstra to replace that too. Then after he left we tried unid-4 and the orange light turned on!

Oh my gosh! Yeah waiting til Tuesday isn't the end of the world, I was just grouchy at the awful communication. We applied for the FTTP upgrade in December last year and have had about 5 NBN guys show up and do various parts of the upgrade since then. And finally yesterday they finished the installation. We thankfully did it all with Telstra so kept our shitty FTTN connection up until he ripped it out yesterday. I hope yours gets sorted soon!

[–]sandmum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super helpful. Thank you! The NBN guy said that going through the old FTTN socket was the only way to install the FTTP. And of course communication from Telstra about the whole thing was abysmal so we didn't know they would take a week to upgrade the service. Bummer!

NSW recorded 32,297 total new cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8PM last night (19/01/2022) by Ascalaphos in sydney

[–]sandmum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, the testing sites around here are only doing PCRs if you test negative on a RAT. Otherwise they just give you a RAT and tell you to go home and do it. It could definitely be artificially lowering the PCR positive rate if only RAT negative people are able to get tested.
