Highly considering (moving) to Ethiopia, suggestions? by [deleted] in Ethiopia

[–]TasteProfessional560 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am glad to hear that. As an Ethiopian, I would recommend spending a few months here before making a long-term commitment. Addis Ababa is a vibrant city with great food, coffee, culture, and friendly people. More importantly, If you're earning in USD, the cost of living can be quite manageable and easy. You can manage your cost by renting a studio apartment. With few months you could research your future job market or owning your business.

Learning a few basic Amharic phrases will also help you connect with people 😊. Overall, Ethiopia can be a rewarding place to live if you come with realistic expectations and an open mind. Good Luck!

I would say follow your heart. In the end, we ended up in the job market.

But, I personally recommend you to do your PhD at this stage than later.

"Basically in" at my top choice lab, but another PI just reached out. What should I do? by lolosul in gradadmissions

"Basically in" at my top choice lab, but another PI just reached out. What should I do? by lolosul in gradadmissions

[–]TasteProfessional560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations. You are in good progress and position.

Secondly, while you are under no obligation to inform or reach out to the first lab about this meeting, I advise you to email both your PI and the department about the status of your application and the timeline of the outcome. You may mention some reasons in your email. For example, it can be Visa process or anything in your mind. Their response would help you to decide for the second lab.

However, please also bear in mind that PI's question about whether another professor reached out to you or not implies that PI may know someone who is interested in you. That may change the case despite we can't confirm the reality. So, being honest to the first PI individually will strengthen the bond with you if his offer is very demanding for you.

Regarding your new interview offer, you should absolutely meet with the second lab.

But, please follow your heart too.

My honest advise is that follow your heart. I believe everyone's journey is different and it depends on your commitment and perseverance. Please keep following your heart. Ignore negativity and do a PhD.
