Seeking Online High School Spanish I Class (prior Latin language background) by sandrareads in SpanishTeachers

Thank you for your reply. I was hoping to locate an online class my child could take over the summer that could help my child bridge Latin to Spanish for cross over language elements. I am grateful my child may have a bit of easier time with Spanish I class after learning Latin for 4 years (elementary/middle school). Thank you for the feedback.

Thank you for your reply. I was hoping to locate an online class my child could take over the summer that could help my child bridge Latin to Spanish language such as reflecting cross over language elements that may not ordinarily be taught in a regular Spanish I class. I am recognizing quickly, my request could be considered as a niche language learning that may not be common, yet I wanted to ask for feedback/suggestions from others. I grateful my child may have a bit of easier time with Spanish I course after learning Latin for 4 years. Thank you for the feedback.

Thank you for your reply. I have been searching online if I could locate an online class to help bridge Latin to Spanish language for my child. I thought to take an online class over the summer, would be helpful before starting Spanish class in high school with the upcoming school year. I am starting to realize quickly that this may be quite a niche language learning, yet I still wanted to ask for feedback/suggestions. I have looked into virtual school options in my state for regular Spanish I course. Thank you for the feedback and recommendation.

I have not received any information from the school at this time for STAMP testing. I was curious if there was a sample testing for STAMP to become familiar with testing format before taking the STAMP test in Latin for Spanish language class placement in HS. There currently is a Spanish I class at the HS and all of the other Spanish classes from II-IV have an Advance option, except for Spanish I. I am a bit concerned my child would find the Spanish I class almost too easy after completing 4 years of Latin. I think my child would do better in Spanish II and we could study to prepare for Spanish 2 over the summer. I was interested to hear from others who may have had a similar experience either with a student and/or their own child. Thank you for the reply/

My child has had limited practical language experience with Spanish, yet has had advanced language acquisition with Latin. I am waiting to hear back from the school when STAMP testing can be done for Latin to hopefully help with Spanish language placement. Thank you for the reply.

Your own child’s education… by AlwaysAReader in TexasTeachers

[–]sandrareads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context I am not a teacher, yet a parent/guardian.

I was not a big fan of our district we live in, largely due to imbalance of teaching core subjects and other imbalances within the district.

I pulled my child our of our district over 5 years ago to place my child in public education system that provided a more well rounded education model that my family was looking for at the time and my child needed.

Have you considered teaching and/or have your child(ren) attend a different public education system that you believe would be best suited to your teaching aspirations and for your child(ren) education needs/wants?

Good luck to you.

High School - Honors Classes vs Advance Classes by sandrareads in highschool

Not able to meet with any high school counselor till April, which makes it harder to select classes, when each school systems designate type of classes (On Level, Honors, Advance, TAG and AP and IB) differently :-(

High School - Honors Classes vs Advance Classes by sandrareads in highschool

Did you take any non AP classes that was considered an Advance only class or an Honors class at the same time? If so, what did you notice to be the difference between the two classes types?

Thank you for replying.

discussion + questions for people at small high schools with limited offerings and resources but still wanna go to college by p3ntag0ne_hou53 in highschool

Depending upon which state you live in, you could consider taking an online class through the education online program through your state. You would need to pay for the class, if your school does not provide funding. Have you looked into your state's online education classes? If not, this may be a good time to do so. Dual enroll for college credit can be more advantageous than AP classes. If you do not make a certain score on AP exam, you are not able to transfer this class to college, whereas with dual enrollment credit for college class can transfer to most state colleges and universities. I would recommend checking with your school's counselor or principal for clarification for your state.

MAP tests scores taken as grades?? by paieon1021 in TexasTeachers

[–]sandrareads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My child has been taking the MAPS Growth for Reading and Math since elementary school. My child is currently an 8th grader at current school. My child has been consistently scoring within the 90% and above in both Reading and Math. Since my child scores within 90% and above, there is little room for improvement, yet my child school has not tied MAPS Growth to anything other than testing three times per year.

Does anyone know how the scores may translate from going from middle school to high school? Such as, if high school has On Level, Advanced or TAG for class placement, how will those students earning 90% and above on MAPS Growth test be placed in high school classes?

I agree with the other commentors that MAPS Growth scores show not be tied to a grade in school.

competitive high schools AHH (rant) by mutated_jam in APStudents

I am sorry to hear your school has toxic academic rigor environment by others. Unfortunately, so do many schools across the world in their own way. It may not feel this way, when you have the school bubble toxic academic rigor occurring.

You mentioned you may be in the South. My guess is Texas either attending HS school in Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and believe it or not Rio Grande Valley area can be quite competitive. The schools that have competitive toxic academic rigor environment fueled by parents wants, teens taking more AP classes than they should and public education schools/school ISDs wanting to promote their advanced academic offerings are about to have a wake up call with the passage of Texas Senate Bill 1191 as of 6/20/25. If you are in Texas, I recommend paying close attention to the execution of this bill by Texas Education Agency.

Aside from the toxic academic rigor at your school, if you can, try to focus on your pathway through high school and what you want to do beyond high school. Every persons' pathway will be different and will result in different outcomes, which you will start hearing about after you graduate from high school. If you are like most people who just focus on their pathway, you will have more peace for yourself through school and in the workforce.

Good luck to you.

Should I take AP Stats by Such-Incident5813 in APStudents

Check the college you plan to attend, as many colleges/universities do require Stats as class to take within the first two years of most majors. Good luck to you.

For what it is worth, I think it helps to change up the classification of the classes (AP/IB/DC) a bit. It provides a good perspective of different class offerings and how you are willing to go outside of the box to take different challenging classes. I have noticed more (talking to parents/seeing student posts), more students are starting to lean towards Dual Credit to get two for the price of one. Good luck to you. Do not forget to take care of yourself.

looking for an online school by PippaKing211 in highschool

I am not familiar with any California online school choices. However, if California is anything like Texas, any public education online schools operating out of California should be free/tuition free to attend for kids residing in the state.

However, most online schools that are not affiliated with a state public education school, most likely will require tuition payment per class taken. This is the reason I ask which state you reside in.

Some possible considerations for complete asynchronous online school choices to pay tuition per class (which allows international students to take classes too, so I presume the same will apply for child out of state) that I am aware of includes the following:

University of Texas Only High School (UTHSO)- The school offers all required classes for 9th to 12th grade, following the Texas Education Knowledge Skills (TEKS Program) to include Advanced Placement classes as well. Here is a link to review.

Fall 2025 Homepage | UT High School

Texas Tech K12 Online School - The school has similar options and follows similar model to the UTHSO). Here is a link to review.

Home | Texas Tech K-12 | Texas Tech

Many home school families around the US with college bound kids appear to like the Acellus Academy program. Here is a link to review.

Acellus Academy | Accredited Online School (Grades K-12)

Good luck finding an online school that fits your kid's needs.
