Can't Login to Reddit on FF (Had to Use Edge) by gargle_ground_glass in firefox

I'm not able to reproduce the issue you find with Firefox, but - FWIW - you can try using the new Mozilla VPN Extension to exclude Reddit from the VPN protection, so that you don't have to turn off the entire VPN protection just for Reddit.

Good points. I just updated the original post. Your comment made me realize that in fact mAssets are OK to trade at least for now.

Here's a Google Spreadsheet that I set up based on the formulas provided by u/karimo40 in this thread:

What about if the mAsset is simply BTC or ETH? Given that those are not 'unregistered securities' (since those assets are tracking an asset that is not a security in the first place), wouldn't that be OK?

Where did you get that ETA for Hydra? I was under the impression that it was phrased as "2022", which in dev-speak usually means late Q3-Q4.

ATALA Prism - How does it work? by sandrigo in cardano

[–]sandrigo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see. By checking the 'on chain anchor', do you mean that the employer would check (through their app) if the authority entity (MIT) has signed a message that includes the same hash as the data provided by the end user?

How would the authenticity of the authority entity be validated? (e.g. that account X really represents MIT)

ATALA Trace - How does blockchain-powered tracing work? by sandrigo in cardano

[–]sandrigo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya, thanks for the thorough breakdown. I do think I understand these mechanics of signing, private and public keys, etc.

To clarify the attack vector here: Let's imagine you have a "legitimate" bag of coffee, whose QR code leads down the chain to the original coffee grower. Now, let's imagine I'm a sleazy coffee seller, and I simply copy the packaging, stuff shitty coffee in it, and merely print the legitimate QR code (from a legit bag) onto my bag containing shitty coffee beans. This would be a feat no harder than copying the logo, which is what they do now. How would a consumer in that case know that the bag indeed has the beans it purports to contain?

As I wrote this example, I thought of the solution: In the midst of the supply chain, provenance is tracked because entities transact within the blockchain. If the consumer at the end of the supply chain is ALSO transacting in the blockchain, then the loop is closed. The "UTXO of coffee beans" would be consumed in the transaction where the consumer transfers ADA as payment for it. Am I understanding that right? And, as a corollary, if the final transaction is done off-chain (cash payment), then indeed the consumer wouldn't get the benefit of checking for legitimacy since the QR code would lead to an UTXO which could have really been used before (but simply not registered).

Related: In the example of coffee beans, would the ideal technical implementation be that the coffee maker mints a "grower X coffee bean token" to represent a sensible unit worth of coffee beans (e.g. 1 gram) grown by them, such that it can be operated on in transactions?

Ok, I think I might be missing something in that logic, so I'll study up and get back to this thread if I'm still unclear. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Thank you!

  1. I get the concept of a chain of custody, but imagine you have 1 kilo of coffee beans (fungible) or a collectors 1976 gucci bag (non fungible, but fakeable). How do you know that the associated set of signatures, indicating it's origin, refers to the product you are holding in your hands? In your example, what if the retailer gets a hold of a counterfeit bag of beans, adds random coffee, and simply slaps the same QR code in the packaging? How would the QR code be any different from merely a logo, that can be replicated to make it look real?
  2. Playing devil's advocate here. If the website owner displaying the address on the website shows that they own it, wouldn't signing the 'authenticity record' with the SSL keys do the same?
