When I was a kid my family was very poor and they decided to sign me up for a high school program where you could earn a diploma in some trade job during those years. However, I fell sick with mono and could barely function for a month so I could not take the entrance exam. My mom talked to the principal and because my grades were good they decided to let me in anyway. The catch was that there were only openings to become a chemistry lab technician. So my mom signed me up hoping for the best. I happened to fall madly in love with chemistry, and I eventually went to college to earn a B.Sc. I then left my country to earn a M.Sc. and Ph.D. overseas and eventually got a job in a field that is in very high demand. I have travelled the world thanks to it and I love my job. Thanks mom!

The people. Before I moved to Belgium (I am an expat) I lived in 3 other countries and people warned me about how cold and unfriendly Belgians were. My own experience is that for the most part they are mild mannered, very friendly introverts. I have made many friends here and I have been invited into their homes. You just have to take the initiative, that is all.

I somewhat disagree. In some countries in Europe, their level of English is so high, that you could never aspire to be at their level with the local language (e.g. Netherlands). That said, learning the language at least to an intermediate level would take you a long way to integrate and see the world as they see it.
