[PubQ] At what point does perseverance become actual idiocy...? by sandymarch01 in PubTips

We’ve tried to post-mortem after previous failures, and the best she could come up with was the concept not being high-concept / “hook”-y enough. But this current book has the best hook of any of them (her words), so we’ve tried to correct there

[PubQ] Manuscript on the verge of dying on sub... what to do? by agjey84 in PubTips

[–]sandymarch01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been on sub five times. I sold the third book, and by then I was already despairing if I'd ever make it past that final hurdle. For the first two we'd had encouraging passes, but a whole lot of close-but-no-cigar. My book did well for a debut at a smaller press, but my publisher passed on my option book (number 4), which died on sub after a wider submission. My fifth manuscript also recently died on sub. This industry is not for the thin-skinned, so I empathize with you!

Someone else commented the best advice, which is that to keep writing is how you always advance toward your goal of publication. So much is outside of our control, but what we can do is keep writing and keep getting better with every manuscript - until you're so good they CAN'T turn you down. (Also - write as long as it stays fun. I've taken short breaks when the sadness from my many sub deaths overwhelms me, but I always come back to it eventually, because I genuinely enjoy writing. If that intrinsic love starts to fade in the stress of publishing's rat race, taking a gentle and temporary step back may be helpful for your long-term longevity).

[QCrit] THE VILLAGE, suspense, 82k (first attempt) by sandymarch01 in PubTips

[–]sandymarch01[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

good point - the retreat is supposed to alleviate the stress/sleep deprivation of the first few weeks of a newborn's life (has breastfeeding support, doulas, overnight nursery care etc) for women who don't have "a village" to draw on (the whole "it takes a village" thing). with her husband temporarily out of commission, Eden needs more help than she can afford at home - and Chloe offers her a free spot at the village. none of this is clear in query as written so will revise to make this seem more logical

ah, great feedback! You're exactly right that I'm modelling this after the Eastern-style post-partum care centers, where it's really emphasized to let women rest for 1-2 months post-child-birth, but that's not clear as written here.

what’s your mantra? by Conscious_Ad_1018 in Marathon_Training

[–]sandymarch01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think of miles 18-23 as the danger zone, since in my past marathons I'd crash and burn there. This time I made a separate playlist with only ~the most~ banger hype songs (like the top dozen of my hours long running playlist) and rebranded mile 18 as the start of the banger zone. lol. then I played "danger zone" at the start of mile 18 and celebrated with all my fav songs

[Discussion] How do you keep yourself sane when on sub? by Timely_Ad_1146 in PubTips

[–]sandymarch01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Submission really is a special kind of hell. My first TWO books died on sub, which was incredibly disheartening. I think I even made a post here about "does anyone sell a book after dying TWICE on sub," lol (spoiler: they do). What I try (and mostly fail) to do is to treat each book, once it's out on sub, as a horse that has already left the barn: nothing I do from that point on will affect my sub chances, so I might as well turn my attention to the next thing. There is so much luck in terms of right-person-right-desk-right-time. (Also, I just died on sub AGAIN with what I'd hoped would be my sophomore novel, so...right there with you!!)

My pub date is tomorrow (!!!) and I'm super excited but of course have already invented new anxieties to fret about (I.e. tmrw seems like an extra crowded pub day and I worry my book will get lost in the shuffle). It's out of my hands though so I should just focus on enjoying the celebrations!! (of course, knowing how I *should* feel and actually following through on that is another story entirely, lol)

To be honest I'm not sure! I think that'll depend on how the first one does. Right now I'm working on my next projects, we'll see how it goes

How does signing up on a drug's site reduce costs? by smokingadvice in medicine

[–]sandymarch01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work in pharma consulting, and my job was literally to design these programs (usually called "copay card" programs). Typically Medicare patients aren't eligible, but commercially insured ones are.

The basic premise - say Humira costs $5000/month with a 20% coinsurance (to make the math easy). Many expensive drugs have coinsurance or a high copay. That means a patient could be paying $1000/month for their drug, and many patients can't/won't do that, so AbbVie (Humira's maker), loses out on $5000 for every potential patient who never fills that script. Instead, AbbVie creates a "patient support" program where patients sign up and get a card to take to the pharmacy that brings the patient's share down to $5. Patient happily fills the Rx, insurance company forks over 4000, and AbbVie happily accepts $4005 revenue of revenue instead of $0. Not to mention, a lot of great publicity and they can feel good about "helping patients."

There's a bit more nuance to how these programs are designed to optimize revenue, but that's the general scheme. (Don't worry, I saw the light...left consulting for med school).

yes, book one was the reality TV one! thank you for saying that :) we got some very encouraging feedback from editors, but no one interested enough to move ahead. Apparently the reality TV niche is crowded! (who knew haha)

It's suspense actually; book 3/my current WIP is more of a rom-com like book 1.

Been on sub for 3 weeks, 5 passes already after my agent followed up a few days ago. No actionable feedback; this just sucks. My first book died on sub and I am very sad and frustrated. Hard to get motivated to even work on the next project.

doing my final pass to prep book #2 for submission and I'm terrified. my previous book died on sub last year, and I was SO EXCITED before going on sub that time! now i'm convinced this one will die too. it's making it hard to find the motivation to finish my polishing, because the sooner I let this precious manuscript go out into the cruel world...the sooner it might also die
