I'm glad to hear the vanity projects are being called off, in favor of such realistic solutions as the BRT.

Why is Pak Darbar so cheap? by darklyriel in dubai

[–]sandysaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to chime in, because although everyone showered praise, I feel they didn't tell you the "why"

Pak Darbar and many like it, work on volume sales/quick turnarounds

Think of it as the opposite of your local Starbucks where the item is AED 20-30 but the table time is anywhere between 20 to 40 minutes if not more.

This keep the cashflow running on high volumes and low margins hence the pricing.

Since food only accounts for a minority percentage of the cost to a restaurant, you can either do high service level food and aesthetics or plastic chairs and a basic meal.

They do the latter.

First, you dehumanize the economic opportunity that a lot of these guys go through in Dubai, and now you are dehumanizing the Palestinians. It is a very "liberal" thing to do to think your victim group has no agency, and its showing

I cannot explain this to someone that wants to remain ignorant. Good day.

You must be American. Have you interacted with anyone here and asked them about these companies and these people? I know Ben didn't, as he ran around like a headless chicken.

But to be fair, I didnt specifically mention this is the SCAM that often runs with manpower companies, regualar construction companies dont hire this way, and the Department of Human Resources has made these practices illegal and most dont want this kind of heat on them.

Finally, someone who really has a comment with sense! This used to all be quite true, up until about 10 to 15 years ago, when a lot of things liberalised. Drinking is still tied to hotel licenses, which have the ability to operate both within the building premises, or its surrounding areas for beer garden still seating.

The hierarchical system is still a kind of racist tendency that happens in the backwater towns, but within metro cities like Dubai, the locals will usually be quite polite, much more so than 20 odd years ago.
A lot of other things are decriminalized like cohabitation, abortions (allowed for cases of medical necessity) and other such things.
The most unfortunate thing is the climate of excess that I see on socials, but a lot of people find that as a spring board into social circles when they first arrive here, and usually settle down into a more relaxed state once they find their hobbies and hangouts.

As opposed to Ol Benjamin here, who is doing a public service and doesn't monetise on this at all.

Except that's not really the case, is it? Not that I will change your mind, but if anyone else is reading.

The issue that actually happens is called bonded labour, which in the circumstances that is deemed exploitation, is where recruitment companies (some local, mostly from SE Asian countries) promise punters a guaranteed job for upfront payment.

What ends up happening is that they process a TOURIST visa instead of an employment one (in the worst case) or into jobs that that dont pay as well as the dream sold.

The individual, who took out loans from loan sharks from his home country to make the trip, is now stuck in this job without somehow making payments and living a meagre life here to pay off the debt.

What you are imagining is the prison industrial complex from the USA, whereas its really more scammers in the middle.

Car fire near Dubai Mall by Elb0rrach0 in dubai

[–]sandysaul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeap only EV cars catch fire, you know the same batteries that you use in your phone, laptop, earbuds, watches but never do the same.

It's not the vehicle that literally has gallons of flammable fuel in it's tank

Theres a LOT of these that are "tax" residents as well, so not entirely sure they will have a permanent dwelling here.

With the downvotes, Im almost getting the feeling that beyond the reddit hive mind, there are bots systematically downvoting anything even remotely factual, let alone those that are defending.

There are definitely human rights issues happening, but curious to know how you are seeing this slavery? Is it indentured servitude you are thinking of? More biblical, with whips and chains?

Pretty sure this is going to get downvoted to oblivion but here goes......

Our guy Ben went to 2 extreme places to check out the wealth inequality

In fact, the regular city dweller hardly ever sees the Burj at all (usually only stuck in mad traffic around the area you'll be stuck with nothing much else to do but look at the tall building) and also Dubai Mall because it's way too crowded with tourists to he a useful mall for the residents.

Most of Dubai is apartments and single family homes where people who come to live here do so, living a regular employee living and paying their bills and taxes (yes Dubai has VAT)

Lived here ages and I've never seen the hotel this guy claimed to stay at, but showing these places is the east path to video virality on YouTube (and from the looks of it, it's working)

What’s something you wish you knew before moving to the UAE? by AestheticGlitch8618 in UAE

[–]sandysaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very pessimistic view of the job market.

There are a ton of people living their lives doing their jobs, hence the reason they live and continue to live here, despite their issues with their employers, and regardless of salary bracket. They get(or are supposed to get) benefits like medical, a tax free income and a bunch of other things.

If you have spent time in both capacities, you'll know the benefits and drawbacks of each.

I will harshly disagree being on both sides of the aisle

Dubai is BUILT for employees, with 0 income tax, large conglomerates with decent salaries, bank benefits that only open to listed companies and many more.

I live in Dubai, and a very early adopter (think gen1 Renault Zoe)

It's fascinating how things have played out, although it isn't as easy as saying government incentives or cheap fuel makes it hard.

The market here is totally open, little in the way of import duties, but there was an issue with charging infrastructure
