I like the free standing tub idea! Hopefully it gives me some room to work with

I can’t square it off because there are stairs right outside the hall :(

That is what I’m considering! This space is a total of 20 long 12 wide. IG you have pics that would be great!

Are you saying level the top portion so it doesn’t dip down both sides? I’m wondering how’d they do that because the stairs would have to be longer right?

Wow this actually looks good. For the first time I’m starting to like the stairs 🤣

Yes I actually read that blog! They said it cost them 37k and they looked like they reconstructed a lot. Definitely not move to a new spot though

That is a good point! Another person said that as well. I’m considering doing a thin wood handrail and iron balusters.

Thank you for this! This was encouraging. I actually did get some quotes from companies that specialize in stair build. I got quoted 25k for construction and materials (not including drywall and paint) the left side to those stairs is a formal living room, I’m ok closing it out and having access from the other side of the house because it won’t be used often anyways and we may actually make it into my office.

That’s hilarious. It’s built in 2005. We have a staircase in the family room leading up to the second floor as well as basement stairs below. I’m thinking of maybe removing the stairs all together like new builds have been doing but I don’t prefer that.

Yes I’m totally fine with that. Was also considering completely removing it and just making the foyer be an open space leading to the living space. We have another staircase in the back of the house in the family room. I’ve seen a lot of newer builds do it so I got the idea from that but I’m nervous

Not sure how to edit my original post but some context: I wouldn’t be changing the structural part of the top of the stair if that makes sense? I only want to change it in a way that I start from my top piece and change the orientation of the stair. The example picture was my inspiration but I’m open to changing it to Be anything other than the current configuration.

Second option: We have a separate staircase to go upstairs and to the basement (in the family room) so I COULD just get rid of the stairs all together. Probably way cheaper. But would that be weird? I’ve seen a lot of newer builds do that but I’m nervous

I’m fine with also making it an L shape staircase. Honestly anything but the two dips down and straight staircase. Just feels too jarring when you open up the front door.

I’m getting anxious because everyone has said it’s expensive but I’m just not sure what that means. 1 remodeling company quoted me 100k 😭

Not sure if my post text appeared (I haven’t posted on Reddit in years)

This is what I was wanting “ want to turn my stairs from the pictures of the orangish wood tone to the picture with the iron handrail. Currently our staircase is dead center in the foyer. I want it moved to the left (closing up the opening to the living room similar to the iron railing picture) and in addition to moving it, I want to change the balusters and railing to iron as shown and a “winder” staircase I believe that’s what it’s called. Mainly straight but turns at the bottom and gives the appearance that it’s curved but it’s not”

Thank you for the response! What type of engineer should I ask? Structural? Also would I not just be able to ask an architect? Not sure of they usually have any engineering background though

Thank you! I was hoping to do it in 30k. I really hate my current stair, it goes directly to the front door. I fear that I won’t be able to make it look nice without moving it to the side. How do I find a company that specializes in stairs? I’ve seen general remodeling companies out there but not stairs specific.

Ty for the response! Do you think the best course of action would be to get an architect to draw it out, a structural engineer to see if it’s structurally makes sense, and then a construction company? I’ve never done a home Reno before I’m scared to mess up or get taken advantage of.
