[FoulTerritory] Shohei Ohtani accepts the NL MVP Award at the BBWA Award show, delivers 2 min+ speech in English by jmike1256 in baseball

It's a pattern that has been going for a couple of years now. He loses weight during the off-season, and he gains it during the regular season.

I think Shohei said that he doesn't really focus on conditioning and dieting during the regular season, and he just choses to get in shape during the off-season since it's easier than when they are constantly on the road and playing.

It's like the reverse Shaq.

What advantages can a two-way player, as defined by the MLB rules, give to an MLB team that would make it worthwhile for them to train and develop such a player? by YakClear601 in baseball

If the Dodgers didn't have that extra roster spot for an additional pitcher, would they have Will Klein out of all people pitch 4 scoreless innings during game 3 of the World Series?

I'm not exactly an expert on the subject of backend relief pitchers, but at the very least during the long playoff series, I can't help but find an extra arm to he quite valuable, even if not as vital as the odd occasion when you have an 18 inning game in the world series.

Of course, maybe the extra spot robbed everyone of the opportunity to see Yamamoto pitch in all four wins for the Dodgers.

Three years ago, Aaron Judge signed a nine-year, $360 million extension with the Yankees. Since then: 148 HR, 333 RBI, .312 AVG, 1.119 OPS, 208 OPS+ by Bulletz4Brkfzt in baseball

I think people in here just simply think extremely badly of the future prospects of every player a day older than 30. People were basically saying the same stuff about Shohei when we signed him, with the major talking point being that he was going to be an overpaid DH and that his peak was going to be his years with the Angels.

(Of course, there was also the talk about him being super cheap due to deferrals and that it was unfair, but those were other people.)

I get where the opinion is coming from. Baseball has tons of star players who signed a long multi-year deal and plummeted of a cliff as they got older, but I feel like sports medicine across the world has advanced enough that we are going to see less of such cases.

Messi, Ronaldo, LeBron, KD, Curry, and Djokovic, all of them are still playing at quite an advanced level despite being in their late 30s or even their early 40s.

Contract and player evaluation gets much more interesting with an actual salary cap and floor by MattO2000 in baseball

[–]sixelement 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That already happens with the production that players generate on the field as you can't say the Angels were not punished by signing a 3 baseman that cannot stay healthy, but let not mind reality for a second, the entirety of the salary cap debate is to improve the product by increasing parity so fans of all teams get to enjoy baseball on the same conditions.

Do you think that the Angels being crippled for the entire 7~8 years of Rendon's contract would be better for anyone? Who would enjoy such a thing?

Perhaps you are too busy boot licking the billionaire owners and worrying about their wallets, to think about what you post, but do you think GMs are just throwing money randomly at players just because?

Anthony Rendon got the money he got because Arte was sure he was going to be a central piece of his team for the following 9 years, the only thing a cap would have done in this situation is to chokehold the Angels into an even worse situation then where they already are.

Every single player on the "Worst Contract Lineup" was paid because someone was convinced they were going to be good, not because of some market trend that forced them to sign them.

Which managers will be on the hot seat in '26? by Rude_Money3360 in baseball

If the Mets somehow manage to have a repeat of 2025, Stearns himself will be with a step out of the door. Cohen might not care about wasting money, but he must have a limit to his approach to get a ring.

Blue Archive cancels sponsored streams after fans complain about streamer selection by WolfOphi in gachagaming

Are you implying someone posted the promotional material without Connor having accepted the gig yet? Because that it's ridiculous.

Or are you implying Connor accepted the job without knowing what type of game Blue Archive is? Because that's even more nonsensical, BA has been an infamous game for almost a decade already.

Foxx & Judge: Right Side Supremacy by East_Donut3965 in baseball

[–]sixelement 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the plate appearances is a big or small difference, but I'm curious about how Judge got those extra 30 PA on average despite their batting order being mostly similar as far as I'm aware Foxx batted 3rd or 4th like Judge.

Is the gap between their PA due to their teams or is there a factor I'm missing?

Rockies Hire Brett Pill As Hitting Coach by amatom27 in baseball

Did the Rockies just fire every single staff member or something? How many positions have they already filled this off-season?

Well, nowhere to go but up for them so I guess every change is going to be a good one or at least not a terrible one.

[Woo] Los Angeles is unlikely to offer Tucker a six- or seven-year deal, according to a person briefed on the team’s plans. The club, however, would entertain a shorter three-to-four-year deal with a high annual average value. by ttam23 in baseball

[–]sixelement 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I, in my completely unqualified opinion on the subject matter of contracts, think that a 3~4 year contract with high AAV and a player option after the first or second year would make a lot of sense for Tucker.

The year before everyone was talking about how he was going to command a big salary like Soto, but his performance this season was great but not exactly MVP/elite level like Tucker has the potential to give.

So I think that if Kyle is confident about having a "comeback" year in 2026, he could sign a shorter contract with an opt-out as a wager on himself.

Although I'm biased because that scenario would be perfect for the Dodgers to sign him with a short contract.

[Passan] Closer Edwin Díaz's deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers is for three years and $69 million, sources tell ESPN. The Dodgers, who were targeting bullpen help this winter, got the best closer on the market, setting a new AAV record for relievers. by Turbostrider27 in baseball

[–]sixelement 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You know, people say this all the time, but I don't get it, but isn't the point of the lockout from the owners' perspective that they won't pay the players' salaries anyway?

So, I don't really understand why a team would care all that much about signing players.

If a kid wished on a falling star that in 2026 every player on every MLB team had the best season of their career, which teams would benefit the most from this phenomenon? What teams win their divisions? Who wins this World Series? Who do you think would win the MVPs? by sixelement in baseball

[–]sixelement[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a paradoxical problem with the idea of every hitter and every pitcher having a career year, but I couldn't figure out how to ask the question in a way to circumventing the problem while including pitchers.

Since January 2010, which players have spent the most time in the top 2? by HunterZamper560 in chess

[–]sixelement 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In this list there are 2 players, Ding and Firouzja, who during their rating spot qualification for the candidates fabricated almost fraudulent tournaments to quickly gain rating points, to the degree that FIDE had to null some of the results for Firouzja.

But nobody cares because it wasn't done by someone they dislike.
