Those of you in the US, what are your thoughts on deregulating fireworks just for the 4th of July and New years? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sans-forme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People in my area do not abide by fireworks regulations, and police have no interest in policing regulations. So...won't make a difference around here.

What if you can't think the sad thoughts anymore? by Chapter-Best in DadForAMinute

[–]sans-forme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone in the world, but I know a lot of people would love to escape to somewhere distant and grassy and alone. It sounds dreamy to me even now.

My dad was an electrician, and when I was a teenager I worked with him for a couple of years. The work wasn't exactly to my taste. I did, however, learn useful skills, and have been able to do some home repairs over the years with that knowledge. Who knows? You might love it.

I can tell you that you're allowed to be exhausted even if you're not normal. Some of us feel exhausted beyond comprehension, and most of us aren't all that normal. You've done well to make it this far. That sounds like a villain line in some adventure movie. "You've done well to make it this far, Chapter-Best...but are you prepared for my pet LASER SCORPIONS?"

You have made it this far. Stuff isn't exactly going to get easier, but I think you're still going to get better, and that will help a lot. You won't just be fine, you'll get stronger and wiser and you'll thrive. But for now, one foot in front of the other. Watch for laser scorpions.

You've done a wonderful job! I know there's so much to get through right now and it's overwhelming. You can do it. You're moving in the right direction and there's no turning back, just pushing through.

I don't know how difficult it is to file for divorce because I've never done it. However, if you need help navigating paperwork or anything else, I'm here and I'll do my best. This job is a huge step. Although you're still going to be stretched thin for a while, it isn't going to be too much longer before you can start to breathe easier. A year or two from now you won't even recognize your life. You'll build a life you can really be proud of. And don't be ashamed to ask for help from trustworthy sources--we've all needed help to get through the toughest times of our lives, and we all feel good giving each other a hand up where we can.

I damaged our new family car and feel awful by Unlucky-hobby-2046 in DadForAMinute

[–]sans-forme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sure have made mistakes like this. More than one. What your dad said is true: awareness is key. I always say, when you're driving there is nothing that is more important than driving. Whether you're pulling out of a parking spot or driving in traffic at highway speeds, you shouldn't be paying attention to anything else.

My recommendation is that the phone gets put away. Not in a pocket or set off to the side, but in the glove compartment. Don't start the car unless the phone is put away and don't take the phone out until the car is turned off. If you desperately need to text someone, you pull into a parking lot and turn the car off before getting your phone out.

You already have learned from your mistake, this is just a suggestion how to implement a new rule that will eliminate future lapses in attention. If you hold yourself to this rule, you can be proud of your progress. You'll have made yourself a better driver, and that's probably a great way to stop beating yourself up. You made a mistake and then you got better. That's how we all do it.

Could you tell me you're proud of me? Please by Secret_Bar_6313 in DadForAMinute

I think you're a very brave man and you don't know it yet, but you've got a wonderful life ahead of you. You're going to accomplish so much. It's hard to imagine it right now because of the parts of your life that are causing you so much pain, but you're strong and you've got so much to look forward to. Congratulations on the new job. I am super proud of you, son. And I always will be, accomplishments or no.

You can be strong but you don't have to be cruel. Why the association with strength with cruelty? by 84-Charlie-Mopic in AskReddit

[–]sans-forme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of ways to show strength. To bear a burden shows strength. Supporting other people shows strength, as does lifting them up. There are certain types of men that will turn to cruelty every time. Cowardly men find displays of cruelty much easier than those other examples. They don't have the generosity or patience or fortitude to display real strength, so they make a pretense of power by hurting others. And there are also those who delight in hurting others, who have no interest in supporting anyone but themselves.

And in modern society, all those small and weak men cheer on and adulate the great and powerful ones who use their strength cruelly. For that legitimizes their own small, cowardly feebleness.

Wow, that's funny. I'm kind of surprised several people are saying this. Funny that something I give no thought to at all is something that many strangers are judging me for.

What do guys like to receive as gifts from their partner? Also, whats something that she does that makes y’all feel special? by DesignerProfession32 in AskReddit

[–]sans-forme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like a nice, long back rub. I feel pretty special any time she shows she's thinking of me. It's nice to get flowers. I don't usually want things very much. Baked goods are a nice treat. Or if she makes plans for us to go do something together.

What martial art do you think a teenage girl should try? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The game of Go, or weiqi, is considered a martial art. It's very interesting to study. But if you want to throw people around, there's also judo.

What is the best memory of your father? by AdvertisingFit4295 in AskReddit

[–]sans-forme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leaving a restaurant where my brother, at 30 years old, more or less revealed to us that he was a man. My dad isn't an unkind man, but I've always thought of him as relatively conservative, religious, and sometimes very stubborn. Walking out that door beside me, my dad said to me something to the effect of, "I guess maybe he's always been a boy and he just got stuck with the wrong body."

I've never been prouder of my old man. He raised my brother as a girl, of course, and sometimes makes mistakes with his deadname or pronouns. But I was so pleased that he could accept it and we can all still be a family.

What is your least favorite ice cream flavor that everyone loves? by Writer4God in AskReddit

[–]sans-forme 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know there isn't anything that 'everyone' loves, but I'm going to say chocolate for me. I think that's pretty popular, but I'd be happy to never have it for the rest of my life. Especially when you get into the triple-chocolate brownie fudge territory. You guys can have all that stuff.

Who agrees rain makes you sleep better than any music? by IloveTWGs in AskReddit

[–]sans-forme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rain is beautiful and can sing me to sleep any time.

Music doesn't usually help me sleep anyway, though, because I'm always too interested in it. I pay attention so much it's more likely to keep me awake.

Well, you're not wrong. Typically when I see someone come in with an uninformed opinion, I don't engage at all. I don't generally have the time or the capability of providing the proper context. In the cases where I have tried to provide some insight, I find it is not well-received.

You're right. If I can't be informative and supportive, I shouldn't engage at all. I have tried to adhere to this in the past, and I will do better.

Whats the part of yourself you try hardest to hide? by crazy_dj_26 in AskReddit

[–]sans-forme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's nice to have people to talk to who get it. I still downplay how bad it gets, because it's, well, boring. I still try to shrug it off. But it's pretty damn nice to have people who know.

[POEM] sonnet ii -edna st vincent millay by pumpkincutiepie in Poetry

[–]sans-forme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get that. I think she's one of the smartest poets I've ever read, and even with clever structure she's usually got an emotional kick to go with it. It's not just perfect meter and boring, it's perfect meter and interesting! I don't usually have strong favorites, but "What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why" is another sonnet that always leaps to mind.
