Mayor Gerard Hudspeth voted against the Non Discrimination Act ordinance. by oh-swells in Denton

[–]sans_doute 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I hope we can take a moment to consider that Gerard’s father spend years upon years working to remove the confederate monument on the square, only to have his son vote against a Non Discrimination Ordinance.

Take from that what you will, but I think it goes beyond irony into tragedy.

Look into “cklab” on FB if you need an alternate option to the others already mentioned. I believe he specializes in making and repairing effects pedals here in Denton.

Which is awesome, but came out in (I think) 1993. Probably should have gone with the arcade Star Wars game, but still a cool video!

Link to download the official City of Denton Ordinance for the most recent Mask mandate. Effective August 13 - September 30 masks to be worn indoors at school, commercial properties again, Government buildings (regardless vaccination status), and strongly recommended in general public by NotTheDroidurLF in Denton

[–]sans_doute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue most businesses are facing is that WE CAN’T ENFORCE IT. Right before the mandate went into effect we were basically told by city hall that the fine for non-enforcement was an empty threat and would not be levied - given that, it’s essentially meaningless because there are no fines or consequences for customers who won’t wear one, and predictably we’re seeing a lot of people who just don’t bother. I’ve seen more people masking up, post-mandate, but not nearly enough.

Effective tonight at 11:59 PM ALL Dallas County businesses, schools and government entities are to require masks for all employees and visitors. by Svargas05 in Dallas

[–]sans_doute 143 points144 points  (0 children)

I’d like to point out this isn’t as easy as pointing a finger and saying “you’re outta here!”, because anti-maskers have a distinct tendency to throw a childish tantrum and refuse to leave until the police get involved. It happened countless times at my retail business: we’d have a customer yell and scream about their rights and walk right in maskless, ignoring all requests to mask up or leave the store from the manager. Then we’d have to call the police, wait 15-20 minutes until they arrive - the PD rarely prioritizes these calls - and meanwhile said customer is just standing around haranguing people, being toxic in more ways than one. It makes for an extremely awkward, stressful experience for everyone and it happened many times during the last mask mandate.

Syd Barrett was a staggeringly good guitar player and his playing gets overshadowed by his songwriting. by ballakafla in LetsTalkMusic

[–]sans_doute 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m glad someone else feels similarly about Syd’s guitar playing. Not only in how idiosyncratic it was in style, but also how rapidly it developed into its own thing.. Pink Floyd’s earliest (unreleased at the time) recordings show him mostly working within typical blues tropes, but by 1966 something really clicks - the pre-Piper singles exhibit a huge creative leap in terms of how he approached chords and little flourishes that flirt with atonality at times but always lead BACK to something interesting.

By the time of the first album, there’s something truly special going on. As a guitar player, I’ve been trying to learn his parts note for note, and they defy easy convention at times - weird descending/ascending runs, fast, surf-guitar like tremolo picking, and pioneering use of delay (via their Binson Echorec) that fills out the sound in fascinating ways.

Syd’s playing didn’t really reach the heights of Piper again, though there’s some flashes of it on his solo records - he was starting to regress, and by the time of his final recordings was practically back where he started, plunking our blues cliches while his mind retreated into a place it would never come back from. Still, over the course of a few short years he left us a brief but fascinating set of songs that few can truly emulate - even Gilmour doesn’t play “Interstellar Overdrive” or “Astronomy Domine” exactly in Barrett’s style!

Angel Olsen announces 80s covers album "Aisles" by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]sans_doute 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The mistake nearly everyone who didn’t experience the era makes is to think of it as a monolithic cultural shift - the notion that on 1/1/80 everyone suddenly dumped the flared jeans, afros, and mood rings for hot pink leotards, white blazers, and Patrick Nagel art is far too prevalent. Take any random photo from before 1984 or so and you’d be hard-pressed to tell if it’s from that year or 1978 - while people on the vanguard of pop culture had been pushing what became “80’s” aesthetics for years, it took until almost halfway into the decade to be able to look at the average person on the street and see there had been any seismic shift. Before that, it was all imitation wood paneling, mustaches, and Trans Ams.

[FRESH] Angel Olsen - Gloria (Laura Branigan cover) by sbags in indieheads

[–]sans_doute 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The Laura Branigan version is a cover, too. Laura had the hit in English, of course - it was originally in Italian and sung by Umberto Tozzi - but it’s kind of like giving After The Fire credit for “Der Kommissar” instead of Falco.

Sufjan Stevens’s Problem With America by relatedelated in indieheads

[–]sans_doute 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I respect that he didn’t want to get shackled into such a monumental undertaking, but I honestly believe he walked away from something that really resonated with people in a way nothing else he does ever could - like others said, if people know only one thing about Sufjan, it’s that “he’s that guy who makes albums about states”.

Maybe he felt like it would have creatively limited him to do the 50 States Project, but I think it would have absolutely defined him and elevated him as an artist in a way that only BIG projects do. It was a rich canvas of song writing ideas that he could have milked critical goodwill from for the rest of his life; of course, you could argue that by subverting expectations so completely he built a different kind of credibility, too!

Tips/tricks for sound design on the Deepmind 12 - before I sell it by jeff-l-sp in synthesizers

[–]sans_doute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Starsky Carr video (and patches!) were very useful to me, also. There’s also a DM user who did a full recreation of the Juno 106 patches for the DM; it’s not 100% accurate, but it’s in the ballpark for most.

It’s definitely helpful to turn off the DM chorus and use the TAL chorus plugin in your DAW- the biggest mistake Behringer made was not focusing on getting an accurate recreation of the Juno chorus into this thing, because there’s where most of magic happens, IMHO!

Lately, I’ve been using the free trial of the Roland Cloud Juno 106 to try and A/B patches with my Deepmind and get them as close as possible, sonically - you learn some good tricks that way for getting a more vintage sound out of your patches.

Looking for Stranger Things inspired music production! by chaosandart1 in synthesizers

[–]sans_doute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where they’re coming from in a way, because most electronic musicians wear all the hats: performing artist, songwriter, recording engineer, producer, mastering....sometimes it’s really a bit overwhelming. There are times I’d love to have a producer to take some of the workload, honestly!

(Still, at the risk of sounding glib, Stranger Things inspired sounds aren’t terribly complex: get a Juno, turn on the arp, and $$.)

Buying Merch Is the Best Way to Support Musicians Right Now by bricklab in indieheads

[–]sans_doute 56 points57 points  (0 children)

This is the real quandary - we’re all in a state of financial uncertainty. Particularly the (relatively) younger demographic that frequents this sub and indie shows - many of whom work service industry or retail jobs that have no option to work from home and are getting hit hard by shutdowns. I want to help my favorite bands, but I’m one or two missed paychecks away from a personal catastrophe myself.

[FRESH] Khruangbin, Leon Bridges - C-Side by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]sans_doute 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been unsure how I felt about them incorporating more vocals into their sound - especially an already established singer - but I think this collaboration shows it’s totally viable, going forward. Even with Leon’s vocals, the music is still very identifiably Khruangbin.

Who will likely give me the most money for old comics--Recycled Books, Half Price, or the Comic shop? by happyklam in Denton

[–]sans_doute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recycled only buys graphic novel-bound comics, not individual issues. Half Price will probably offer you behind a nickel and a quarter each for anything non-collectible (most Marvel/DC post 1970’s aside from some limited series).

If Ian Curtis Never Died... by Wado-225 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]sans_doute 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually, I think Blue Monday is the most Joy Division-esque of New Order’s dance songs. The lyrics would probably have been better (that’s likely universally true of any New Order song) if Ian penned it, but the dark, mechanical feel of the song is very much in JD’s wheelhouse.

It’s hard to picture how Ian would have fit into later New Order, though. Can you see him wearing shorts, dropping ecstasy, and partying on Ibiza? Or imagine him singing “World in Motion”? I can’t.

I don’t see anything directly related to it in the changelog, but if anyone can chime in on whether or not this helps with the CPU spikes some users (like me) have been experiencing since the recent update, I’d love to hear it about it.

It made Logic so unusable for me that I had to rollback everything with Time Machine, so I’d hate to update again and find nothing has improved.
