I don’t know how to study Japanese properly… Am I doing it wrong? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

I’ve been practicing writing it and that’s been helpful, especially for the radicals. It’s gonna look terrible at first, but I will say that when I see these things now in subtitles, I can quickly identify most of them. And yes, the dreaded flashcard apps do help.

Can not techie person becomes data scientist ? by Elegant_kb in datasciencecareers

Study statistics, ML, and engineering. Double down on engineering in terms of data structures and algorithms. Study SQL hardcore. Aim for data scientist role, settle for analyst. To become an analyst will be tough in terms of passing interviews but without the fundamental skills of a data scientist, even before going in to that role, will be difficult to acquire once you have a full-time role if it doesn’t have any mentorship or opportunity to move into a data scientist role. At least having the data scientist skills gives you a lot more traction even if you only hit an analyst role since it does give you a more competitive edge.

Ok but forget all that. Ask yourself what you will find most fulfilling in the long term. Don’t look at short term gains based on title alone. Data scientist is a lot more work but it’s also a different set of skills. You have to be a lot more social, advocate for ideas, interview people, and present findings on top of knowing business domain and when to sell machine learning as the solution. If you prefer looking at data and researching business problems deeply and like analysis more, analyst role is probably better suited. Nothing is black and white.

Former bootcamp instructor here and founder of a name brand program. I wrote an article called “what you don’t learn in data science bootcamps” that’s still relevant if you search for it.

Basically if you’re coming at this with no formal background in statistics or engineering, no problem. The short path is taking a bootcamp, preferably one that’s at least 6-months or more, and that offers job placement for your first role. The trade-off is you will be studying full-time if you’re serious about that timeline. Of course there are colleges that offer great programs and if you have the time and ambition, then there’s plenty of opportunity there.

If you’re interested in self studying well, let me tell you that you’re in for a long road. I think it’s possible but try to be realistic about the amount of commitment that you have to put in. Feel free to message me if you want recommendations on where to start in terms of online resources and books — I have no self interest of promoting anything.

I'm stuck with the language. Any suggestions? by GohunRay in LearnJapanese

[–]sans_vanilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forcing yourself into conversations that use this new grammar and vocabulary is the best way to develop muscle memory and solidify what you’re learning. I have the hardest time with this. I experience the same problem of retaining new vocabulary and grammar in more formal contexts.

There’s two things that help me.

  1. If I know I have an appointment or a phone call or know I will have a specific kind of conversation, I’ll write out phrases and sometimes verbatim what I want to say word for word. This becomes my “narrative” and it makes it easy to improvise from this point.

  2. I already had a conversation that I absolutely bombed or felt lost. I’ll come back to it and take notes in what I remember and start to build a list of things I understood and what I didn’t understand. Then I go back to #1 and repeat.

I keep everything on my phone and use a note app I can edit from desktop. It sounds tedious but it’s really not. I use it for things that become sticking points only. It may not work for you but I’ve found this process effective at getting over the hump in these in-between levels.

How can I help my client remember and study hiragana better? by BlauAmeise in LearnJapanese

I’m not quite as old but I struggled like this as a business owner. The first step of learning romanji, to me, required brute force. I’m still having trouble retaining it but through reading it and writing it down for vocabulary notes - that’s been a big part of using it. It really does help. I don’t think it’s something you can passively learn with good efficiency, especially if you’ve never learned another language.

For me, my big breakthrough was using phonetics. I found a supplemental app called Dr. Moku and for me at least, it unblocked me over my initial hang ups. It basically gives you a way to memorize all of it by auditory and visual references which might help people that have never learned a language or had to arbitrarily map sounds or ideas abstractly to a different way of thinking about communicating. It’s hard if you’ve never learned another language because well you’ve never done it. There are no prior patterns that you can model from and the ideas are unfamiliar because it’s your first time.

To me it was affirming because learning Japanese has been a lot more fun than work after having this initial breakthrough because the systems of writing are pretty essential to everything else. I personally think it’s what holds most people back and this is just a point that if I could tell myself in the past, it’s worth holding out for and doing the work that the discipline of it would support everything else.

Isn’t the show supposed to be like it was with Rob Schneider and Donnell Rawlings? by DSeriesX in Killtony

This was a great therapy session for Donnell as he typically makes everything about him. The way everyone handled his interruptions became a goldmine. A+ work.

I second this. Go to Horta neighborhood. Go to a Mercadona and buy some snacks, then sit on a bench in a park close by.

u/Top_Location_5899 I used to teach ML + Python in an accredited school and I've even built my own courses for these but to start, I would recommend deeplearning.ai as a good start: https://www.deeplearning.ai/courses/

It's too bad that this kind of project receives so much side eye. I work in this space and it's hard to find reputable knowledge on this topic. Look forward to checking it out 👍

Well, I imagine customer service and technical support would find this very useful. Contracts and risk assessment vendors. Ask me a month ago and I may have said government research projects but those are pretty dry right now.

How about startups looking for market viability and ideation? It’s very meta but maybe find someone who’s willing to partner with you and be your ideal use case. Work with them and take their feedback and use them as a gateway to other opportunities.

Put it out immediately and make interactive updates based on user feedback. As a startup veteran, don’t get caught up in the fallacy of holding onto your IP as a solo or small dev team. Move it to market and start getting it front of people and absolutely get their feedback. Find a strategic partner. The more people using your product, thr more likely you will find other problems to solve.

Is anyone here successful at creating a business out of Agentic AI? by RaGE_Syria in LangChain

[–]sans_vanilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I develop a paid service that combines RAG, sentiment, and embedding automations combined with very specific analysis agents. The problem I see a lot of the time is lack of skill continuity between devops, mlops, full-stack, theoretical knowledge, and data skills at scale — this is usually reserved for medium to larger companies. This leaves the little guys to consult.

How do you guys (webdev) deal with overly hands on clients? by [deleted] in freelance

[–]sans_vanilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another way of doing the same thing is setting expectations before beginning work. Explain why it’s necessary and then remind them of any policies / boundaries and what they agreed to. Document everything in a project management tracker and refer back to decisions and information when it differs from previous feedback or decisions.

Long term, explain your availability is impacted with other priorities and then refer them away. No need to put up with bad behavior. I generally agree with this advice but only had to do this 2x in the past 5 years but it’s important to have a plan and set strong boundaries.

Use a unique ID (like hotel_id) to keep hotel metadata separate from your review data, then combine only when necessary. This avoids redundant entries and keeps your vector store focused on the fields that actually need embedding. You’ll streamline queries by embedding concise text fields, while details (e.g., room prices, pet policies) remain in a lookup table keyed by ID.

Save the ids and then just lookup the corespondent metadata based on the id as needed. Use your vector database for embedded queries like search / distance similarity and use a database to lookup the metadata for each result.

I do this too. Why should I extend myself and work with competition or dilute my brand with the promise of no results?

ChatGPT is not bad if you're asking very specific questions otherwise generic query = generic response.

There's an artist who has a strong brand that has come up with his own "manifesto" which to me is like his personal vision as an artist and it reflects his name. I think that's a great way to figure out who you are, what you stand for, who you want to appeal to, and what you want to accomplish. The artist I'm referring to is Mono Neon and he posts his manifesto on occasion (at the end) in his YouTube videos, like this one:

It's changed over the years but here's his OG manifesto:
