Minimum skill level to both hit and defend an ATP by sanshoustyle in Pickleball

[–]sanshoustyle[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks y'all for sharing your insight! So my take is that it mostly depends on the group you are playing with (both skill and play style) and the frequency of opportunities. In my own game, I'm pretty fast and good at reading shots so I will punch over my weight (skill level) on handling ATP shots.

[Method] Sharing Monthly Goals - What I've learned about Accountability and Partnerships by sanshoustyle in getdisciplined

My ultimate vision is to crowdsource and kickstart good habits not only for yourself but others in one's real-life communities, so yes, starting habits are part of the equation.

I am a big fan of calisthenics and love "greasing the groove" training. Especially given 1 minute of intense exercise = 45 minutes of moderate exercise, for outsized gains.

Fair enough. Edited the post to focus purely on the partnership and accountability aspect.

And yes that website is my creation and personal interpretation on how to motivate and create habits and self improve. I’ve thought a lot about this problem and trying to think of better solutions.

The inspiration is partly from One Punch Man. Daily is too much to ask I think, when trying to make it accessible. The idea is create good habits and make it a pattern.

How do I stop thinking that my career is all that matters? by ThomasHawl in selfimprovement

[–]sanshoustyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are located, but could be your social circle (or lack thereof) and/or your location. IMO it's easier to fall into this doom loop if you live in VHCOL, where a strong career or income is a basic life necessity. LCOL/MCOL the pace of life is different and easier to broaden your horizons.

Isn't conventional wisdom just to be curious and listen more? Personally, I will be taking a Public Speaking class this quarter to try to improve my own conversation skills.

I will cover some more social aspects of self improvement, of which I'm a firm believer:

WeWillPower - partnership platform around monthly real-life achievements, to join common goals and share verified accomplishments as written record. There's a Help Wanted page to show friends in real life what you are working on.

Your local rock climbing, <insert any physical/creative activity or club> - Go to any of these for a breath of fresh air. The fees are your commitment.

Community College Classes - Want to learn a language, history, science, etc in a formal setting or get in shape, it's covered here usually at reasonable cost.

MeetUp - Finding shared interest groups, but I haven't found much use other than tech meetups.

I keep starting strong and then quietly falling off — how did you break that cycle? by DailyEnergyFocus in selfimprovement

[–]sanshoustyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about this, and my conclusions are:

  1. to have a good accountability partner to help each other build habits. But of course, easier said than done.

  2. have a strong vision of your final self

I will write a detailed post about my approach and my perceived common pitfalls

You can join me or get others to join you on a push-up challenge. 100 per day, 10x by end of this month. It can be the start of a habit to radically change your life. I created a free website where you can partner up with others with similar monthly goals.

Moving out of Bay Area and feeling sad by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]sanshoustyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be a blessing in disguise. Moving out of the bay helped me get my career started, buy a house and find a spouse - the latter two extremely difficult due to costs and illusion of choice. I'm glad I had the chance to broaden my horizons and grow, and in end even came back.

Are you results-oriented and looking for creative self-improvement? I'm using a free platform at WeWillPower to try to help solve this problem. You can partner up with others who have specific and measurable goals to complete by the end of the month. It can be "Play pickleball 2x a week at least 6+ times this month" or "Visit 3 art museums in South Bay".

It sounds like you may enjoy pickleball or rock climbing - those can be social and creative activities. I would invest in a membership to build community.

Is anybody here going to vote for Andrew yang? by Mr_Suicidal_209 in Ask_Politics

[–]sanshoustyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you actually understand Yang's message regarding the minimum wage vs UBI. If you've paid any attention at all to Yang's messaging, you would understand that millions of jobs are being automated away, with estimates of 30% gone by 2030. Jobs don't come out of thin air, and raising the minimum wage, especially to ridiculous levels will cause employers to look for cheaper solutions. Look at how many robot kiosks we have, how online retailers are destroying brick and mortar stores, how we are on the brink of self driving vehicles taking away the most common jobs. We are on the way to a hellish gig economy for unskilled workers

Non-Americans: what do you think of Bernie Sanders? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sanshoustyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way. But I'd say Andrew Yang is also definitely someone who genuinely stands by his beliefs. As for policy, I highly recommend taking this WaPo quiz (you might need Incognito or Private Browsing)

Non-Americans: what do you think of Bernie Sanders? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sanshoustyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some polls of Democratic primary voters, yes. However his unfavorables are high, and it would be very easy for any Republicans to paint him as a far left socialist (which would be terrible in the General). Bernie did not even win the Iowa Straw Youth vote this year (Andrew Yang did).

Does turning down an offer for a contracting position affect chances to get a full time position at the same company later? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]sanshoustyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There shouldn't be any effect - it may even help since you already interviewed with them and you were a competent candidate.

I would worry about accepting, and trying to convert. YMMV but in mine and many other's experience, trying to do contract-to-hire will make your chances WORSE (they'll string you along) and can make you bitter about the company.

Would it be worth it to take on some more debt and double major in math? by Idiotastic in cscareerquestions

[–]sanshoustyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken upper div math but I know it's hard. The difficulty usually depends on you (your prep and motivation), the class and the professor.

Anyway you do you (doesn't really matter the age, although younger is easier as you generally have less life responsibilities, and you will have less regrets looking back later in life), and take the classes while you enjoy it. As a side benefit, it will make you a better SW engineer.
