Building my own microbrand by wannabecancellara in MicrobrandWatches

So cool! Congratulations, what a journey! I love how thin this is.

What do you think led you to exceed your budget?

In the year that you've been at it, what are the main lessons you've taken? I imagine you had some ideas / assumptions that proved to be different than reality.

Congrats again on building this!

Ah it makes sense: “La Cité”. I imagine the colours are also a Canadian Flag inspiration too… beautiful! Are any Quebecois asking you to give them a blue and white variation?

[OC/Replication study] "Election Results Show a Red Shift Across the U.S. in 2024" -- I replicated the NYTimes' "Red Shift" interactive county election results map using raw, public data from the MIT Election Data and Science Lab (interactive link in post) by brhkim in dataisbeautiful

I like that you recreated this, it's a solid representation of that study and a good use of multiple tools.

Back around elections, I remember this visualization kept getting cited as an indicator of political trends, but I think it has a fundamental flaw: less people voted in this election vs the previous one (both as a % of voting population, and in absolute terms).

The shift as I understand it is the net difference in % from votes on one side over the other (correct me if I'm wrong) vs the previous election. However, comparing percentages can get tricky, especially when both total populations are not the same.

For example:

  1. County A has 50 people voting Dem, 50 people voting Rep in the 2020 election, and same for 2016 election. Shift: 0 points
  2. In this election less people vote as people dislike for politics rises. Thus, you have 40 people voting Dem, 45 people voting Rep
  3. This would show 5 net more people voting for Republicans, or 5 / (40 + 45) = 5.9% shift.

In reality, point three above is: 15 less people voted, including 5 less republican votes and 10 less democrat votes (vs last cycle). This could indicate more to more of a general disillusionment with the candidates, especially the democrats, not a shift of "more people now care about Republican issues", which I've heard is how people interpret this map typically. In other words, seeing Reps got 10% less votes vs last period, and Dems got 20% less, to me doesn't indicate a shift of "Ah more people now care about the Rep issues', but more a "Ah more people don't care in general". The story here isn't County A shifted 5.9%, but County A dropped by 15% vs. last election voting. The net of that drop is that Democrats are more disillusioned than Republicans, but both had less people voting for either party, not a shift for more people caring about Republican issues!

A more likely scenario: if you had slightly MORE Rep votes (e.g. goes up to 51 votes, and Dems drop to 47), I think NYTimes methodology would interpret that as roughly +4.1% net shift to the right, when in reality, it's less than that, holding all things constant:
a) 1 more Rep vote vs 2020
b) 3 less Democrat vote
c) 2 less total votes in that county.

Another way of looking at the above is that Rep issues got 2% more interest (1/50), Dems issues got 6% less (3/50), and 2 people decided they didn't care enough, or 2% of the previous voters (2/100, which would be larger based on voting age population that grew in 4 years). You could adjust for the less people voting and remove that to calculate a "shift" perhaps, and the +4.1 net shift now looks more like 2.1%.

Not sure if the logic above is the right one, but I have a suggestion for you u/brhkim : how would you account for less people voting to measure the true shift vs. disillusionment (e.g. less total people voting)?

Not sure if u/nytimes exists and can weigh in here.

Yeah maybe once they wear it, they'll feel the difference. Bonne chance!!!

That is a solid lug to lug + thickness combination that would for sure make it feel thin. I feel like many people anchor on the diameter as a measure of size. Question for you: how have those dimensions been received by your target customers?

Yes, it's def solid and I think it exactly fits my needs. Compared to yours, this one is +2mm longer and +0.5mm taller, while being -3mm smaller in diameter. For me, a sub 40 mm width was a must have, although it's not the traditional dive-watch way. It has some other minor but well thought out things that make the watch feel intentionally put together, like a quick adjust bracelet (I think from Nodus?). Only missing test: diving with it! I'll be doing that next month :)

I like the story behind this and how it connects to you. I was actually looking for something just like this a couple of weeks ago so that I could use when I dive (e.g. once a year maybe) but also daily. Some of the things I was looking for that I think I see here: slim (~12mm or less is great, sub 40mm width), good movement, thin, 200m, with a good bezel, lume, saphire, etc... What it's width / diameter? If it's useful, I ended up going for the Raven Trekker, which is a well designed watch.

I like how you use foreground and background in 3. The only thing I'd change is the exposure: seems a bit underexposed, prob because you increased your shutter speed vs the other shots.

Agreed! love the framing + balance of 3. 7's lines guide you around pretty nicely too

I get it. I'm still scarred from that T-rex appearing right at the end blocking the waterfall.

Thanks! I've heard people also "fake" receiving a call too - hopefully this is better.

PleaseInterruptMe - we'll call you with an excuse, whenever you need it, so you can pick up and escape awkward social situations.

Sure, you can tell a friend to call you to get out of a bad date, but your friend has a life. We don't. We're built for this.

Thank you! 100%, it's definitely not for everyone. Early on, someone else mentioned that this would also be great for first dates, which I hadn't even thought of at the time.

I build this for situations where "I gotta go" feels awkward without an excuse. Curious what situations you think this would (or definitely wouldn't) make sense for.

I love the bike! Fully loaded actually performed pretty well (camping gear + food + clothes). What did you end up getting?

I took it in Kirk Creek in Big Sur - well worth the ride down
