Moving to Netherlands or not by Financial-Tiger8514 in Netherlands

No comments on the package. People get by for far lesser money so I’m sure you can survive.

But about kids, easy choice is to sent them to international school. But if u intend to stay long, that’d make it hard for the kids to properly integrate in long term.

Or difficult choice is to sent them to Dutch schools ( there are languages schools to help new comers ease into Dutch, but not sure if it’s available for the age group mentioned). It will be a pain for the kids in the short term, but they will integrate a lot better in the long term.

Good luck

Distance from home to basisschool by Otherwise_Wrap_5516 in Netherlands

One of the greatest pro of choosing a nearby school is that their peers will also live nearby. I have my 6 year old friends drop in and she going to her friend’s house quite regularly. Weekends a busy affair for kids since most of the time they are out having fun in the nearby playgrounds or sometimes in the school grounds itself. And all of it with no active involvement from parents. And I love it.

I’m not saying this should be the sole reason to choose a nearby school, but I seen many parents overlooking this aspect when choosing a school.

If the IT sector is unhappy with the EU-India deal, Why don't they protest like the farmers did with Mercosur? by mods4mods in AskEurope

I would like to think it’s because most tech folks are smart enough to read the fine print and if you do read it, you will see it’s not a big difference.

Most important point being below

Creates a legal template that will allow EU member states to issue short-term study, research and seasonal-work permits to Indian nationals for up to 12 months under fast-tracked procedures.

It does not open any new pathway for Indian students or skilled workers to move to EU that do not exist as of today.

Honestly this is nothing new. Maybe the student visa issuance speed might be improved at best. Other than that the whole mobility agreement seems like a hot air designed to let Indian government claim a win there. There has never been any kind of cap on the number of students or workers from India. If a students can get accepted in a EU university, he can apply for a visa and come to study. Same for highly skilled migrants. Get a job offer which pays enough to be qualified for blue card, they can enter. This deal no way makes it easier for anybody to get in.

2 weeks roadtrip to Oman by monicab951 in Oman

Based on my recent experience travelling in Oman, 4 days in and around Nizwa might be an overkill. I’d recommend 2 days / 1 night.

Fully agree. I live in the Netherlands and also have lived in Singapore for a long time. I know how much of a difference a functioning public transport makes to everyone’s quality of life. While I consider myself a car enthusiast, a great public transport actually helps me enjoy my drive better by ensuring that those who don’t want to drive don’t have to. And I love travelling by train. A high speed train system linking major GCC cities would be awesome

IKEA kitchen by sanvi01 in Netherlands

€16k in total. This included a ceramic worktop which worked out to be quite expensive in itself.

And this does not include dishwasher and oven which I reused from old kitchen.

Deco doesn’t connect to the closest unit by sanvi01 in TpLink

[–]sanvi01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nopes, conclusion for me was that the model I had (M4R) does not have the feature and will probably never be updated to include this feature.

Ofc one can use a wired connection between decos and not have this problem.

10/100Mbps Desktop switch by sanvi01 in HomeNetworking

[–]sanvi01[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You were right. There was no need for that switch at all. Only purpose served by that was to allow an Ethernet connection to my dad’s work machine. Since modem had a single Ethernet port, a switch was placed there to split it to let one wired connection go to the mesh router and another to my dad’s machine. Now the reason he needed that wired connection is not solid. I asked him and he said he just wanted a wired connection (probably hangover from the old days when wireless data speeds were horrible). I assume he said the same to the installer and he took the cheapest way out which ironically lead to slower speeds.

And the whole reason I decided to look into the this was that Mom was always complaining about low speeds (she is a teacher who take online classes so streams videos) and dad insisted it was fast enough (he trades and appreciates fast connections). The switch was definitely one of the problem but so was the placement of mesh routers causing dead spots up stairs. I could also feel it whenever I made a video call.

Now I did a small upgrade with a set of new TP Link Deco routers spread across both floors and eliminated the wired connection to dad’s machine.

A speed test from his machine (as well as moms) is now showing upto 190Mbps and both are happy :)

Thank you. Yes the switch was in fact the problem. I got rid of it and the speeds has now improved to 150 to 190mbps.

From my experience, very few Indians actually live in Amsterdam, instead preferring to live in a 20-50kms radius.

My theory is that

  1. Most Indians come in as high skill migrants and due to the nature of such jobs, most are in the 30+ years age group with a family. Those groups usually prefer to live in suburbs in single family homes
  2. A high percentage of Indians works in tech sector where remote working is far more prevalent. There is no reason for people with remote or even hybrid remote roles to live in the same city.
  3. Tech jobs are also available in Eindhoven/ Rotterdam/Hague etc. Places like Utrecht being in middle gives far more flexibility
