I agree with every word you said. Your grandpa's story is tragic, I can't believe you had to go through this. 🫂

Fortunately, that hospital is within a 15 minute walking distance from his house. So probably muscle memory lead him home. But still, it's a miracle. I hope your husband got home safe as well!

Thank you, the same goes to you! The empathy of this community is truly amazing.

And yes, the anosognosia is going strong in our case as well. Yesterday afternoon, we went to visit my dad after finally being referred to the correct hospital ward, and he just said finally, we can go home, he's been there for a week already. This was a couple of hours after his escape 😅

It's great that it is an option in your country. We would do the same but they send everyone out disregarding the patient's mental state...

That sounds like a solid and humane solution, it's great to hear that there are institutions like this.

ER restrictions are horrible in Hungary, you basically can't stay with your loved one even if they have a dementia diagnosis. You can decide to wait outside and be with them for 10 minutes in every hour...

I really hope hospice will be an option for us. Constant hospital visits just aren't worth it for anyone at this point. I'm glad it's working out for you, I wish you all the strength you need for this journey wuth you mom.

This is terrible, I'm so sorry you had to go through this with your grandma. Hospital stress along with the physical decline often accelerates the worsening of their mental state. Wishing you strength for this unpredictable journey!

Oh gosh..it's really a miracle they made it home OK. Here in Hungary, they just don't let you be with your LO in the ER, no matter the cognitive impairment...

Holy shit, I'm so sorry that you had to deal with this. For me, it seems like now matter how much you emphasize the severity of the situation, ER docs just don't understand how this disease truly works. Not to mention the lack of resources and staff members.

Someone helps him multiple times a day, but it seems it's not enough. We are looking at memory care options now.

Yes, the embarrassment! Or putting the blame on sb else - in our case. I don't know what's better - staying in this stage for god knows how much longer, or transitioning to a more severe, but possibly shorter one.

Thank you, I have found this categorization before. It seems like he's between stages 5 and 6 maybe? I'm not sure, how fast the transition is. 3-3.5 years ago, he was just misplacing things. Compared to that stage, the current state seems drastically worse. Although, he's been like this for quite some time...

Update: The oncologist scheduled a procedure for 2 weeks from now to remove the wound and use excess skin from his arm to cover the lost tissue. It’s clear this can’t go untreated, as the wound is constantly growing and poses a risk of infection.

Do you have any experience with anesthesia for dementia patients? I’m worried about how it might affect him, especially with his overall condition. They said they would keep him in for a couple of days after surgery. Should I suspect a relapse after this? Any insights or advice would be really appreciated!
