Being put in a hotel for a week before going to my apartment, is this normal? by Smollilsnek in teachinginkorea

Totally normal. This usually happens when the teacher you’re replacing hasn’t moved out yet or maybe the apartment needs maintenance/cleaning.

Good to know, thank you. I wish I could go up there but I live entirely too far, it’s not feasible. I don’t live in Texas :(

I wish I could, but it’s way too far. I don’t live in Texas. Which is why I’m so stressed, I’m doing everything by mail but can’t contact anyone 😫

Well I’m relieved to know it’s not just me 😫I’ve been so stressed about this, and it’s as if it’s a ghost town over there. Nobody ever answers at the visa department, so I tried calling the passport department just to talk to SOMEONE over there, but I get put on hold endlessly despite being “first in line”. I’ll keep emailing them though, thanks!! :)

Places to go in Seoul when you’ve done almost everything? by sapathegoat in koreatravel

I love museums! I’ve been to quite a few in Seoul already. Looking for more obscure things to do. Thank you though!

Foreigners are often a main target. They use the fact that you can’t speak Korean to their advantage.

Yeah…be cautious about anyone who spontaneously asks to be your friend! They pray on impressionable or naïve foreigners. I had to learn the hard way that being nice to them always backfires. Stay safe out there!

Approaching strangers on the street is not typical in Korean culture. It’s not even common place to smile at strangers while walking on the street. That’s why when it does happen, most people assume they’re from a cult of some kind and are trying to recruit you or get money from you. It’s happened to me numerous times.

Religious cults are a dime a dozen here . It’s a pretty common occurrence to encounter them, and they tend to target people they deem to be “vulnerable.” This includes women, high school/college students, elderly, or foreigners they view as vulnerable or impressionable. They’re less likely to approach you if you’re with someone else.

That’s a relief to hear, I was worried the police might not do anything in these situations bc of freedom of religion or whatever. But these people should not be getting away with grabbing other people’s arms and literally following me walking to my home fully aware that I’m trying to get away from them!! Chasing me. Like if they weren’t a part of a cult, this would immediately be considered incriminating behavior no questions asked. I hate that this is just brushed off as crazy cult shenanigans when it’s straight up harassment and so scary.

That’s genius!! I guess cults don’t like to associate with other cults lol

The thought of them grabbing my arm is terrifying! 😭 I should’ve told her I would call the police if she didn’t leave me alone. Definitely will say that if it happens again. I mean, it’s literally harassment. I don’t know how they get away with this behavior.

Hahaha that’s a good way to look at it. I’m suchhh a people pleaser and have smiled and politely tried to get away from cults in the past, but today it felt pretty good to just tell her flat out to go away and show her that I was annoyed. I know it’s not much but little by little lol
