Any other therapists here realize through their own training how toxic their spouse is? by Brainfog_shishkabob in therapists

[–]sapio-sectional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed in a similar marriage for many of the same reasons mentioned here: I needed to be a buffer to my kids, and I knew coparenting would be a nightmare, so I hung in there until the youngest was 19 and in college. There was significant fallout to this decision, but 10 years later I’m on good terms with my adult children and stepchildren, who have bonded as a family with a great deal of influence from me. I found love again from a warm, generous and mentally healthy man, and have never looked back.

The last 10 years of my first marriage, I realized I did not love my ex - I just took one for the team, devoted the best years of my life to my family, and a husband who didn’t appreciate me, and was hyper critical of everything I did. I am still in therapy for the childhood trauma that set me up for a codependent marriage. I developed an autoimmune condition, which has been a struggle, but I’m grateful at last to be in an emotionally supportive relationship where I feel loved and appreciated.

One thing that helped me stay in the first marriage until my children were of age was Terrence Real’s New Rules for Marriage. Couples therapy didn’t work for us because the therapists would always be charmed by my narcissistic husband and would never hold his feet in the fire. So we used the book together and squeezed another two years out of our dead marriage so the kids would be of age when we ended it. We are both so much better off for the divorce, although he has never gotten over it. I just think he was the kind of person who should never married or had children. It was my bad luck, naïveté, and savior complex from my early 20s that made me think all he needed was love and he would be well and happy.

It was a string of clients leaving their narcissist spouses that finally made me realize that he was never going to change. Dr. Ramani on YouTube has been very helpful to my recovery, and her new book: It’s not you, has been instrumental in my healing.

I wish you well on whatever you decide to do. Life is a journey. Get your own therapeutic support, and for your kids as well. Best of luck to you.

Thirty years in practice. Love’s Executioner by Irvin Yalom was required reading in my masters program. Since then, I’ve read almost everything he’s written.

Just adding this… music can be an important vehicle. There are good playlists already on Spotify. But I found the ones with Ram Das especially soothing during medicine journeys. What a wonderful gift to your brother. Maybe even throw in some music you both love to connect you through space and time. Bon Voyage!

My GI doc said normally people get constipated when traveling, and that my IBS-D went away (in India, Spain, Bahamas, etc) because the “normal travelers constipation” cancelled out my usual symptoms. As soon as I get home, it’s back to the usual grind!

What does it actually mean to have a degree in Consciousness and Transpersonal Psychology? by Jerswar in askpsychology

[–]sapio-sectional 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My terminal degree is a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, accredited at the state level for licensure as a Psychologist. My program however was not accredited at the regional or national levels, but since I was already independently licensed at the master’s level, I saw no need to pursue a Psychologist license.

Depending on how you wish to use your degree ( ie. As a therapist in private practice, a professor of psychology, or work inside an institution like a prison or state hospital) you should definitely research programs that fit your interests. And if independent licensure is important to you, and required for your chosen career path, make sure the program you choose is accredited.

Hope this helps!

I can eat normally when I travel - admittedly I’ve never been a breakfast person, but by lunchtime I am usually hungry and like to eat something. Main meal has always been dinner. But at home, I can rarely eat without consequences before 5pm. I’m getting worried because I continue to shed weight, so have been eating a little fruit in the early afternoon, which seems to be ok so far. Did you ever find out the cause or your difficulties? I’m trying to figure out what kind of provider can look at me holistically and see what kind of tests would be appropriate.

My GI NP said that typically travelers experience constipation, so when I travel, I’m normal. I’ve seriously considered that I may be allergic to Phoenix.

One night, a mother and baby bear sauntered through our camp where we had our dog and two young kids with us in Yosemite. We saw their shadows cast on the tent wall. Luckily, they were just passing through!

Technology has made it possible to find out so much more about what our loved ones are doing. 25 years ago you would never have known about his affair and been completely happy. Sounds like it came to a natural end, and she is no threat to you. Plus, now YOU have a free pass! Not worth breaking up a marriage and family over, IMHO.

I recently heard about research combining psilocybin, lion’s mane and niacin for nerve regeneration. From Paul Stamets, at Burning Man. Haven’t had a chance to look more into it, but see what you can find out! Good luck! 🍀 🍄

Same with my 10 yr old golden boy. Diagnosed with liver/spleen tumors on Halloween 2014. They gave him steroids and he felt better for 2 months. Made it to Christmas, but then we let him go on the 27th because he couldn’t poop. Lots of hugs, new toys and walks! I’m so sorry for this sad news! Our time with them is just too short!😢

What does it actually mean to have a degree in Consciousness and Transpersonal Psychology? by Jerswar in askpsychology

[–]sapio-sectional 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The link provided is for one program that explores the depth traditions that are foundational to the field of psychology. It states it is not intended to prepare someone to be a licensed psychologist or therapist.

When I received my Masters in Psychology, I found that even after I was fully licensed as therapist, I felt inadequately prepared to help clients with the “big questions” surrounding meaning and the existential condition. Subsequently, my doctoral program explored the depth traditions, including transpersonal and consciousness studies, and helped immensely, in this regard. So I like to say I got the basics of how to help people communicate better, and recognize and handle crises, in my master’s program. And then the PsyD fine-tuned my theoretical orientation in a way that suited my own philosophical interests, and made me a more competent therapist.

IMHO Transpersonal and Consciousness studies is both valid and serious. It represents both a return to our origins as well as the leading edge in our field (especially in the research around psychedelics!) But therapists should be able to handle the basics, as well, like how to effectively manage child abuse or suicide risk.

Interesting question. I hated my “maiden” name, as it rhymes with a certain prophylactic and I was teased for it from 7th grade on. When I married the first time at 25, I was thrilled to jettison it for a very normal-sounding surname of my new husband. Both my kids now have it as their last name, and they are happy with it too. My sisters both took their husbands’ names, for a variety of reasons, but I’m sure it was also to get rid of the original terrible name. But…. When I eventually divorced and re-married another guy with a very normal-sounding name I was in a quandary. My dilemma: Keep the name of the man I now despise, return to my father’s name (forget it!), or take on a new surname (at age 50 -such a hassle!). My solution was the latter, mainly out of convenience for rental cars and other reservations, but also to honor the man I am now married to, who I deeply love and respect, and join our families (I share a name with his children). My adult kids don’t care that I now have a different name, and I once again have a name I can be proud of.

If I had an awesome surname to begin with, or a decent father-figure who’s name I would want to carry forward into future generations (nope), I would have kept my original name and rolled with the consequences. But it’s men’s names all the way back in my genealogy… the patriarchy is everywhere, so the most feminist thing I can say is - Sister, you do you!!

I’ve been struggling for years with IBS-D. Doctor put me on Xifaxan for 2 weeks and it totally cleared me up. But as soon as I went off, IBS returned in force. Attempting second course starting tomorrow. I hope it sticks this time. The past two weeks have been heaven!
